CWA CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING ‘85
Saturday, July 26, 1985
Hosts: Lance Russell and Dave Brown
Referees: Paul Morton & Jerry Calhoun
HIGHLIGHTS:
*Lance Russell and Dave Brown opened up the show by revealing that we are just two days away from crowning the next #1 contender to the NWA World Heavyweight Title. The tournament will be held on Monday night, with brackets announced today on the show because Ted Dibiase did not win the NWA Title from Ric Flair last Monday night, thanks in part to Dutch Mantell for showing up to prevent him from using that black glove. CWA co-matchmaker Tom Renesto makes his way out and says that he is disgusted with Mantell for perverting the fate of justice and he is upset at these people for cheering him. What happened last Monday was not good for business, plain and simple. So Renesto is giving Ted Dibiase one of the final slots in the tournament against Tom’s “Mystery opponent”. Renesto tells Dave Brown and Lance Russell that he is thinking of top quality names for Dibiase’s quarter-final “mystery opponent” like Barry Orton or maybe even one of the Interns. Lance balks and asks how Tom can deny he is taking a payoff? Eddie Marlin is out now, and he tells Renesto that Tom booked most of the entrants so he has taken it upon himself to fill that final slot. And Dibiase’s quarter-final opponent will be none other than… Dirty Dutch Mantell! Renesto doesn’t like that one bit, but Marlin answers that like Tom has said in the past – Eddie Marlin doesn’t work for Tom Renesto! Renesto and Marlin bicker as they walk off while Dave Brown and Lance Russell show us the quarter-final brackets.
QUARTER-FINALS:
“SUPERSTAR” BILL DUNDEE VS. FORMER NWA CHAMP TOMMY RICH
“THE KING” JERRY LAWLER VS. KOKO B. WARE
DUTCH MANTELL VS. TED DIBIASE
THE MASKED SUPERSTAR VS. “MACHO MAN” RANDY SAVAGE
*Ted Dibiase is out and he shouts at Lance Russell and Dave Brown that he didn’t buy into CWA to have a common thug that he is paying steal his personal property. He wants his black glove and he wants it right now! Dibiase threatens to fire Mantell if he doesn’t show up here to Channel 5 Studios and return the black glove in front of all these people. Dave Brown then takes a phone call from Dutch Mantell, who jokes that word travels quickly to Oil Trough, Texas when Ted Dibiase throws a fit like a spoiled child. Mantell tells Dibiase that it’s very simple – they’ll be seeing each other on Monday night. If Dibiase wants his black glove, he can try to take it from The Dutchman. However, Dutch doesn’t think Dibiase can do it and that’s why Mantell will beat him and go on to get the NWA Title Match that he rightfully deserves. Dibiase is stewing as Dutch ends his call by saying that turnabout is fair play, since Ted stole his Southern Title in the first place. Dibiase has had enough and he reaches over and hangs up the phone. Ted Dibiase then promises to get to embarrass Dutch Mantell in front of all these fans this Monday night!
*”Superstar” Bill Dundee is out and whines about having the deck stacked against him by having to face former NWA Champion Tommy Rich in the very first round. Dave Brown replies that this is an all-star tournament and every single match in the quarter finals could be a main event. Dundee tells Brown that he doesn’t want any of the promoter’s propaganda. However, Dundee says he will defeat Tommy Rich and any other stinkin’ opponent they put in his way. CWA Heavyweight Champion Jerry “The King” Lawler makes his way out and jokes that it’s not a Saturday morning on Channel 5 unless Bill Dundee is complaining! Lawler suggests that Dundee do more focusing on how to stop Tommy Rich from beating his brains out, and less running his mouth. Dundee is furious as he tells Lawler that he is personally going to see fit that The King doesn’t even make it out of the quarter-final round. This brings out Koko B. Ware, who says he doesn’t like what he is hearing from either of these two. Ware wants to make things very clear – he wants Dundee to keep his nose out Koko’s match with The King this Monday night. Things get tense here as Ware and Dundee argue and challenge each other to a match later on, while Jerry Lawler just smiles and tells Dave Brown that no matter what happens with these two dopes, The King is finally going to take his rightful place as the #1 contender to the World Heavyweight Title.
*VTR: “Macho Man” Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth are standing in front of the CWA logo. Savage talks about clearing out Killer Khan last week in front of the world. Not even the monster Killer Khan could stop the Madness from spreading through Memphis like wildfire, excuse the expression. Randy Savage wants to how seven other mere mortals – as great as they all are – think they can stop the Macho Man after what he did to the monster Killer Khan? This Monday will be coronation of the new #1 contender to the NWA World Heavyweight Title. History beckons the Macho Man, and this Monday night will be his finest hour, dig it? “OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH YEAH!!!!!!”
MATCHES:
1) Ted Dibiase defeated Billy Joe Travis at 8:11 when he forced young Travis to submit to the brutal Indian Death-Lock.
2) Jerry “The King” Lawler pinned The Assassin at 6:45 when he came off the second rope with the flying fist drop to the forehead.
3) ”Wild” Bill Irwin & Big Bubba Rogers defeated The Interns: #1 & #2 at 3:02 when Rogers connected with the Bubba Slam on Intern #2 to score the easy win. Irwin shouted that himself and Bubba want a shot at the Southern Tag Team Titles after they beat on the Interns.
4) ”Superstar” Bill Dundee wrestled Koko B. Ware to a double disqualification at 10:45 when both men shoved referee Jerry Calhoun. Dundee and Koko then brawled to the floor, before Eddie Marlin led a bunch a prelim wrestlers into the studio to break up the brawl. Jerry “The King” Lawler walked out with a big smile on his face as he watched the chaos to close the show.
