THE WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION PRESENTS
SATURDAY, JULY 19, 1985
TAPED JULY 3 AT THE CIVIC CENTER IN PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND
GORILLA MONSOON, JESSE “THE BODY” VENTURA and VINCE MCMAHON are ringside to open the show, and they welcome us to another episode of WWF SUPERSTARS OF WRESTLING!
This week, we’ll see the likes of King Kong Bundy, the Killer Bees, Alexi Smirnoff and the Hart Foundation in action!
Plus, the Intercontinental title will be on the line in the main event, as Don Muraco defends the title against Superfly Jimmy Snuka!
KING KONG BUNDY (w/ Classy Freddie Blassie) beats NICK DECARLO. DeCarlo gets hardly any offence in, as Bundy attacks him as soon as the bell sounds, and at the 50-second mark, Bundy delivers the Avalanche in the corner, then follows it up with a splash on his fallen opponent for the 1, 2, 3. Afterwards, Bundy demands that the ref give him a 5-count, which he does.
VINCE, GORILLA and JESSE talk about today’s main event, where we’ll see Jimmy Snuka challenge Don Muraco for the IC title.
Footage is shown of Snuka beating Muraco in the finals of the King of Ring tournament, held a few weeks ago in Foxboro, MA.
VINCE and GORILLA both think we’ll see a new Intercontinental champ crowned here today, but JESSE doesn’t buy it, and says that Snuka may have got lucky when the title wasn’t on the line, but today the belt’s on the line, and Muraco has been unstoppable when the IC title is up for grabs.
VINCE sends us to MEAN GENE OKERLUND for the WWF UPDATE.
OKERLUND says that this week, the WWF Update will focus on “JUMPIN” JIM BRUNZELL & B. BRIAN BLAIR: THE KILLER BEES!
We see a highlight video of the Bees in action, set to Van Halen’s “Jump”.
MEAN GENE says that Brunzell and Blair are an exciting pair, with their scientific prowess and high-flying abilities, they’re a big hit with fans all across the northeast.
We then go to pre-recorded comments from THE KILLER BEES. Brunzell says that they’re setting their sights on the WWF Tag Team titles, and Blair says that any team that faces them in the ring is gonna get stung!
THE KILLER BEES (B. Brian Blair & Jim Brunzell) defeat FRANKIE LAINE & GEORGE SOUTH. Laine and South are a couple of tough veterans, who have had some success individually in the past, but the Bees are just too much for them here. Brunzell gets the win for his team, whipping Laine into the ropes and connecting with a picture-perfect standing dropkick.
MEAN GENE is backstage with “BIG NASTY” ANGELO MOSCA. Gene talks about the recent issues between Mosca and Gorilla Monsoon.
Footage is shown of Mosca smashing Monsoon over the head with a water pitcher recently on Superstars of Wrestling.
MOSCA laughs about the footage we just saw, and asks Gene if he saw the dent in that pitcher afterwards, and says that was nothing compared to the dent he left in Monsoon’s skull!
GENE says that, this Monday night at Madison Square Garden, Monsoon will come out of retirement for one more match, against Mosca.
MOSCA says that Monsoon should have just stayed behind the microphone where he belongs, but oh no, he wanted to get in the ring with Big Nasty. He says that this Monday night, Monsoon’s going to wind up in a hospital bed!
After Mosca walks off, Gene is joined by “SUPERFLY” JIMMY SNUKA. Gene says that Snuka will face Roddy Piper this Monday night at the Garden . . . in a Fiji strap match!
SNUKA says that Piper embarrassed him a few weeks back on Piper’s Pit, but now the Superfly’s got Piper right where he wants him, in his kind of match, a Fiji strap match. Snuka says that he’s never lost a Fiji strap match, and that streak will continue this Monday night.
“THE MAD RUSSIAN” ALEXI SMIRNOFF beats BOB MARCUS. Smirnoff attacks Marcus before the bell even sounds, and proceeds to beat Marcus to a pulp! At around the 60-second mark, Smirnoff connects with a brutal Heart Punch on Marcus, for the 1, 2, 3.
An ad airs, hyping the new issue of WWF magazine, which features stories on George Steele being put through speech therapy by Capt. Lou Albano, an interview with King Kong Bundy, and cameras followed Mr. Fuji and the Magnificent Muraco on a shopping excursion along Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.
VINCE, GORILLA and JESSE talk about last week’s main event, a big 8-man tag team match.
Footage is shown of the final moments from last week’s 8-man tag team main event. We see Jimmy Hart show up unannounced, and watch the match.
VINCE says that no one’s quite sure which participants Jimmy Hart was scouting.
JESSE says he knows, but he’s keeping that information to himself.
VINCE says that two of the participants in that match last week, Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart, are in action next!
THE HART FOUNDATION (Bret Hart & Jim “the Anvil” Neidhart defeat BARRY BRUNO & DAVE BARBIE. The Hart Foundation is firing on all cylinders since arriving in the WWF. Here, they wear Bruno and Barbie down, with Bret getting the pinfall on Barry after Bret and Neidhart delivered the Hart Attack.
MEAN GENE OKERLUND is backstage with reigning WWF World Champion HULK HOGAN.
HOGAN talks about his upcoming WWF title match with King Kong Bundy on Monday night at the Garden. Hogan says that Bundy may be big, but Hogan’s always believed in the old adage, the bigger they are, the harder they fall! He says that this Monday night, he’ll put Bundy down for the 1, 2, 3!
HOGAN then says that next week, right here on Championship Wrestling, he’ll team up with Hillbilly Jim to face Bundy and Big John Studd in a tag team match. He says that they’re going to avenge the injury to his close friend, Andre the Giant.
WWF INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE MATCH:
“SUPERFLY” JIMMY SNUKA beats DON MURACO (Champ) (w/ Mr. Fuji) to win the title. Muraco enjoyed an early advantage after attacking Snuka from behind, and he gave Snuka a vicious beating. But Snuka battles back, and drops Muraco with several chops, and a jumping headbutt. When Snuka goes up to the top rope, Mr. Fuji shoves him off the top, allowing Muraco to recover and stomp a mudhole in Snuka. Snuka still fights back, though, and once again puts Muraco on the mat. Mr. Fuji gets up on the apron, but Snuka delivers a jumping headbutt to him, knocking Fuji to the floor.
Muraco slowly gets to his feet, but Snuka scoops him up, slams him to the mat, then goes to the top rope . . . and hits the Superfly splash!!!
Snuka hooks the leg, and gets the 1, 2, 3!
Jimmy Snuka is the new Intercontinental champion!
VINCE says that this is a perfect example that anything can happen here on Superstars of Wrestling!
VINCE, GORILLA and JESSE wrap things up, and Vince hypes next week’s show, which will feature Hulk Hogan and Hillbilly Jim taking on King Kong Bundy and Big John Studd!
