CWA CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING ‘85
Saturday, July 12, 1985
Hosts: Lance Russell and Dave Brown
Referees: Paul Morton & Jerry Calhoun
HIGHLIGHTS:
*Lance Russell and Dave Brown opened up by promising two bombshells this week, based on events from last Monday night at the Mid South Coliseum. We first have footage of Jerry “The King” Lawler, Tommy Rich and Jimmy Valiant getting revenge on Jimmy Hart as a result of the stipulation from the six-man tag team match. We see Jimmy Hart taking two pile-drivers from The King and being carted out of the Mid South Coliseum for the very last time. We go back to the studio as The King and Wildfire enter to a huge reaction from the crowd. Lawler and Rich celebrate with Lance Russell and Dave Brown about Hart finally being run out of CWA for good. Lawler tells Lance Russell that he has been waiting six long years to finally send Hart out on a stretcher and it feels so good! And now, Lawler and Rich will team up this Monday night against Bill Dundee and Koko B. Ware. Lawler says both himself and Rich are ready for the #1 contender to the NWA Title tournament next Monday night. However, they will enjoy beating Dundee and Koko this Monday, and if they have to face off the following week, well The King is happy to say, ‘let the best man win!’ Rich and Lawler shake hands as we go up to the ring.
*Next we see VTR footage of Ted Dibiase revealing his true motives in his bout against Southern Champion Dutch Mantell. Dibiase used his infamous black glove to steal the Southern Title and thus the NWA World Title match against Ric Flair this Monday night. We go to videotaped comments from Ted Dibiase at his summer home in Hyannis Port. Dibiase has the title prominently displayed and smiles as he says that the braintrust at CWA are exactly as dumb as he assumed. Now, the wrestling world wants to know just why he did what he did. Dibiase says questions like that just prove why he has been so successful and everybody out in TV Land are spending their hard-earned money on tickets every Monday night. What better way to get shots at the NWA World Title is there than to buy your own NWA-affiliated territory? Dibiase doesn’t want to brag, but the money he invested in CWA was chump change and it will be well worth the pay off when he beats Ric Flair and becomes the NWA Champion this Monday. You see, you have to spend money to get prestige. And everybody has a price – there’s no price that Ted Dibiase can’t pay! As far as Dutch Mantell, Dibiase says he feels bad for Dutch and would be happy to compensate him. He is looking for a new driver and he would like to put an offer out to Dutch to fill the position. Dibiase closes by telling everybody in Memphis to come out to see the inevitable crowning of a new NWA World Heavyweight Champion this Monday night.
*Tom Renesto is out and immediately faces accusations from Dave Brown that he is in cahoots with Dibiase. Renesto denies this and says he happens to agree with some things that the man stands for, but he is his own man and working for the best interest of CWA. And it is in the best interest for CWA for Dutch Mantell to take the next week off! His services will not be required today here on Championship Wrestling or on Monday night. Renesto then moves on and says we have an NWA Title match this week, and next Monday it will be an eight man tournament to crown the next #1 contender to the NWA Title. Renesto can confirm that Jerry “The King” Lawler, Tommy Rich, Bill Dundee, Koko B. Ware, The Masked Superstar, the loser of Flair/Dibiase and a wildcard entrant to be announced next week! The winner of this week's bout between “Macho Man” Randy Savage and Killer Khan will also have a spot. Renesto confirms that brackets will be revealed next week here on Championship Wrestling! Renesto excuses himself to get back to making the best decisions possible for CWA, which causes Dave Brown to audibly shrug and sigh.
*VTR: We get a message from “Macho Man” Randy Savage. Randy Savage says that last week he got a measure of revenge, but this week it is 1-on-1 against Killer Khan in a match where there must be a winner. Savage says he is keeping Miss Elizabeth away and telling his brother Lanny Poffo to stay in the dressing room, because he doesn’t want any collateral damage. Either himself or Killer Khan will have to be carried out of the ring this Monday night. Macho Man promises that he will unleash the Madness on Khan and he will finally get his revenge. Every other wrestler is afraid of Killer Khan, but no the Macho Man! Randy Savage fears no man and is feared by every other man – ooooooooooooh yeah!
MATCHES:
1) Tommy Rich pinned Mark “Rollerball” Rocco at 7:11 when he connected with the Lou Thesz press.
2) Bill Dundee pinned The Tennessee Kid at 5:03 when he came off the second rope with the Bomb’s Away. Dundee came over to the desk after the match to complain about having to team with Koko B. Ware again this Monday. Dundee warns Lawler, Rich and his own partner Koko B. Ware that nothing will stop him from becoming the #1 contender.
3) Wild Bill Irwin (w/ Big Bubba Rogers) pinned Billy Joe Travis at 7:45 when Irwin connected with a running lariat. Irwin and Big Bubba Rogers were clearly both unhappy due to the departure from CWA by their manage Jimmy Hart.
4) Terry Taylor pinned Dave “Fit” Finlay at 10:13 when he connected with the flying forearm smash known as the Five Arm.
