CWA CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING ‘85
Saturday, July 12, 1985
Hosts: Lance Russell and Dave Brown
Referees: Paul Morton & Jerry Calhoun
HIGHLIGHTS:
*CWA Heavyweight Champion Jerry “The King” Lawler is once again confronted by Bill Dundee and his former manager Jimmy Hart with Koko B. Ware. Dundee once again demands a title match against Lawler this Monday, again claiming that The King cheated the last time they faced off. Jimmy Hart says his man Koko B. Ware deserves another title shot because he beat The King by count-out last week. Lance Russell mentions that the result is because Dundee belted Lawler from behind! Tom Renesto makes his way out now and says that he knows “the great Jerry Lawler” is not afraid of challengers. So this Monday, it will be Big Bubba Rogers and Koko B. Ware of the First Family teaming up with Bill Dundee against Lawler, Tommy Rich and Jimmy Valiant. And if Lawler is pinned during that match, the person who pins him becomes the new CWA Champion! Renesto is gleeful at the stipulation, until Eddie Marlin makes his way out. Marlin tell Lance Russell that he’d like to make a little addition to the match. If Lawler and his team win, then they get five minutes in the ring with Jimmy Hart! Tom Renesto does not like that at all, but a smiling Jerry Lawler says it will be all or nothing this Monday. And he promises that this will be the very last that we ever see of Jimmy Hart in Memphis! After five long years, The King will have his revenge on his former manager and it will be "the greatest day of his life, baby". Lawler then mocks Hart's annoying cackle. Jimmy Hart is freaking out as Big Bubba and Koko B. Ware walk him to the dressing room.
*Scandor Akbar is out with his monster Killer Khan, who stomps around the studio and lets out occasional shrieks. Akbar has always known that “Macho Man” Randy Savage is a truly stupid man, but he never took Savage’s brother Lanny Poffo for being unintelligent in spite of his silly poems. However, he has to draw the conclusion that the apple doesn’t fall far form the tree in the Poffo family because a match has been signed pitting the brothers against Killer Khan and a special hired gun. Akbar tells Dave Brown that he has used his considerable resources to secure the services of one Riki Choshu, perhaps the most dangerous wrestler in all of Japan. This Monday, Killer Khan and Riki Choshu will obliterate “Macho Man” Randy Savage and his foolish brother Lanny Poffo… and even Miss Elizabeth if she decides to stick her pretty little nose in the proceedings. As far as Akbar is concerned, CWA matchmaker Tom Renesto can consider the destruction of “Macho Man” Randy Savage to be a personal favor!
*The Masked Superstar is out with Lance Russell and Dave Brown. Dave and Lance announce that NWA Champion Ric Flair will be in town next Monday night 7/21 to face Southern Champion Dutch Mantell, but there will also be a tournament on 7/28 with eight wrestlers competing for another NWA Title shot to take place in August as part of the Great American Bash tour. One of those men already entered into the tournament is the Masked Superstar. The Masked Superstar admits to Lance Russell that it’s been a difficult time, with his supposed confidants Jake Roberts and the One Man Gang turning tail and running away from CWA. However, the Masked Superstar is too talented, too cunning and too dangerous to let something like this keep him down. He believes himself to be the uncrowned NWA World Champion and he intends to make himself the crowned champion by winning the upcoming tournament!
*Southern Heavyweight Champion Dutch Mantell is out and tells Lance Russell that he would like to know who this “final challenger” lined up by Tom Renesto is. Mantell is looking ahead to his bout with Ric Flair, but he also wants to concentrate on his next challenger. Tom Renesto makes his way out and says that he likes Dutch Mantell’s fighting spirit. Renesto knows that Mantell only wants to face the very best in the sport today, so he would like to introduce Monday’s Southern Title challenger… Mr. Ted Dibiase! Dibiase makes his way out and shakes hands with the fans around the ringside area, before approaching Mantell and offering his hand. Mantell hesitates, but eventually shakes Dibiase’s hand. Lance Russell questions why CWA investor Dibiase is getting this title shot after just a month back in the ring – and why is it happening one week before Dutch is challenging for the NWA Title? Mantell admits he has those questions himself. Renesto tells Russell that he doesn’t like his authority questioned and surely Mantell isn’t a coward scared of a tough fight? Mantell steps up to Renesto, but Dibiase defuses the situation. Ted thinks his recent wins over big names like The Assassin, Phil Hickerson and Stan Lane put him in line for a title shot, in addition to his reputation as North American Champion and National Champion. All he is looking for is a fair shot at the title and a good, tough match with Mantell this Monday. Dutch Mantell nods and says that’s exactly what he will give Ted Dibiase, but he warns Ted that nothing can stop his momentum as he marches towards Ric Flair on 7/21. Dibiase wishes Mantell luck and again sticks out his hand. Mantell shakes Dibiase's hand and the two eye each other for a moment, before Tom Renesto touts the momentous title bout for this Monday.
MATCHES:
