THE WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION PRESENTS
SATURDAY, JULY 12, 1985
TAPED JULY 3 AT THE CIVIC CENTER IN PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND
GORILLA MONSOON, JESSE “THE BODY” VENTURA and VINCE MCMAHON are ringside to open the show, and they welcome us to another episode of WWF SUPERSTARS OF WRESTLING!
This week, we’ll see the likes of Hillbilly Jim, King Kong Bundy, Big John Studd, Angelo Mosca, and WWF World champion Hulk Hogan in action!
We’ve got a huge main event scheduled, an 8-man tag team match, as the Hart Foundation and the Killer Bees join forces to face the Fabulous Rougeau brothers and WWF Tag Team champions the Dream Team!
HILLBILLY JIM (w/ Uncle Elmer) beats GEORGE SOUTH. Jim has quickly become one of the more popular superstars here in the World Wrestling Federation, and the fans are solidly behind him here. Jim uses power moves to overwhelm South, then puts South away with a big splash for the 1, 2, 3.
VINCE sends us to MEAN GENE OKERLUND for the WWF UPDATE.
OKERLUND says that this week, the WWF Update will focus on the reigning WWF Intercontinental champ, Don Muraco!
Footage is shown of Muraco in action. We see clips of him eating a meatball sandwhich while wrestling, then a clip from another match, where Muraco holds a microphone and provides his own commentary for his match, belittling his opponent as he stomps away at him. From there, we see Muraco wrestling a prelim match with one hand tied behind his back.
GENE says that, as we could see from that video, Muraco has no respect for anyone else, he goes out of his way to humiliate his opponents, and seems to take great pleasure from doing so.
Footage is then shown of Muraco in the recent King of the Ring tournament, beating tough opponents like George Steele and the Junkyard Dog, before falling in defeat to “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka in the finals.
MEAN GENE says that, no matter what you think of Don Muraco, he has proven himself to be a top-notch wrestler, and as tough as they come.
We then go to pre-recorded comments from DON MURACO. He runs down several of the top babyfaces in the WWF, then focuses on Jimmy Snuka, saying Snuka may have got lucky a few times when they’ve met in the ring, but Snuka hasn’t been able to take the IC title from him, and he never will!
KING KONG BUNDY & BIG JOHN STUDD (w/ Classy Freddie Blassie) defeat FRANKIE WILLIAMS & SERGE JODOIN. Williams and Jodoin don’t stand a chance here, as Bundy and Studd attack them at the bell, and squash them in short order. After about 90 seconds, Bundy pins Jodoin after delivering the Avalanche in the corner, then following it up with a splash.
On commentary, Vince, Jesse and Gorilla put Studd and Bundy over as probably the two most dominant wrestlers, not only in the WWF, but perhaps the entire wrestling world!
JESSE says that he heard earlier in the week, that the upcoming Madison Square Garden show had been changed, to include a Hogan – Bundy match for the WWF title, and says that Hogan can kiss his title and his career goodbye!
VINCE says that, speaking of Hulk Hogan, the WWF World champion will be in action next!
NON-TITLE MATCH:
HULK HOGAN beats FRANKIE LAINE. The roof nearly comes off the Providence Civic Center as the Hulkster makes his way to the ring, to his “Real American” theme song. Hogan slaps hands with the fans on his way to the ring, then goes through his usual pre-match routine, including tearing off his t-shirt. The fans just can’t get enough of the Hulkster, but Frankie Laine doesn’t seem impressed, and he yells at the fans to shut up.
Laine attacks Hogan from behind before the bell sounds, and backs the Hulkster into a corner, but Hogan fires back, hitting Laine with big right hands, that leave Laine stunned. Hogan then goes to work on his opponent, and wears him down, before slamming Laine and dropping the big legdrop for the 1, 2, 3!
On commentary, Jesse Ventura runs down Hogan, saying he doesn’t get the appeal of the Hulkster. Jesse says that he’s got a far better physique than Hogan, he’s a far better wrestler AND actor than Hogan, yet these idiot fans still go bananas for the man.
Vince suggests that maybe Jesse would get a reaction more like the Hulkster if he stopped referring to the fans as idiots. Jesse says he’s just telling it like it is!
An ad airs, hyping the new issue of WWF magazine, which features stories on George Steele being put through speech therapy by Capt. Lou Albano, an interview with King Kong Bundy, and cameras followed Mr. Fuji and the Magnificent Muraco on a shopping excursion along Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.
MEAN GENE OKERLUND is standing in front of a WWF banner. He hypes upcoming events, with fans seeing localized promos for their particular market.
GENE talks about the WWF’s return to Madison Square Garden, on Monday night, July 21.
GENE runs down some of the matches that have been signed for the show, including a change to the WWF title match, as it will now be Freddie Blassie’s monster King Kong Bundy challenging Hogan for the title. Plus, the Junkyard Dog will face Bob Orton Jr, Big John Studd will take on Hillbilly Jim, and “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka will face “Rowdy” Roddy Piper in a Fiji strap match! Snuka and Piper will be tied together by a leather strap, and the only way to win is to drag your opponent to all four turnbuckles.
We’ll also see the debut of Corporal Kirchner, a former Paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne division of the US Army, as he takes on the madman from Saudi Arabia, Jaava Ruuk!
Promos are shown from Hogan and Bundy, talking about their upcoming title match at MSG, as well as from Piper and Snuka, regarding their Fiji strap match.
“BIG NASTY” ANGELO MOSCA (w/ Classy Freddie Blassie) beats NICK DECARLO. Mosca, who seems to always be in a bad mood, pounds DeCarlo into the mat, not giving DeCarlo a chance to get any offence in at all. Mosca drops DeCarlo with a shoulderbreaker, then hoists himself up onto the second rope, and delivers an elbowdrop for the pinfall.
After the match, Mosca pulls DeCarlo up, and tosses him over the top rope to the floor, then turns his attention to referee Joey Marella, and chases him out of the ring.
Mosca then looks over at the announce table, and Gorilla Monsoon. Mosca challenges Monsoon to get into the ring and fight.
Gorilla stands up, and puts his headset down, but as he starts for the ring, security personnel rush out and keep Monsoon and Mosca separated.
MEAN GENE is backstage, with CLASSY FREDDIE BLASSIE, KING KONG BUNDY and BIG JOHN STUDD.
Footage is shown of Studd’s first round match in the recent King of the Ring tournament, where Andre the Giant came to the ring, on crutches, and distracted Studd, leading to Big John getting pinned by the Junkyard Dog.
STUDD is livid, and says that he would have won that match, and the whole tournament, if it wasn’t for Andre the Giant sticking his nose where it didn’t belong!
BLASSIE says that if Andre the Giant wants to stick his nose in their business, he’d better be prepared for the consequences, and says that the next time Andre shows his big, ugly face at a WWF event, Studd and Bundy are going to finish the job and cripple the Giant, ending his pathetic excuse for a career once and for all!
BUNDY says that Andre would be wise to listen to Blassie, and stay far, far away from them! Bundy then talks about Hulk Hogan, and says that Hogan thinks he’s going to avenge what happened to Andre. Bundy just laughs, and says that Hogan obviously isn’t very bright, he knows what they did to Andre, what does Hogan think is going to happen to him?
BLASSIE says that he’ll tell everyone exactly what’s going to happen to Hogan, Bundy is going to squash him like the cockroach he is, and take the WWF title!
The three men all share a laugh, as Gene wraps things up and sends us back to ringside.
Back at ringside, Vince, Jesse and Gorilla hype this week’s main event, a huge 8-man tag team match!
BRET HART & JIM NEIDHART & B. BRIAN BLAIR & JIM BRUNZELL defeat ARMAND ROUGEAU & RAYMOND ROUGEAU & BRUTUS BEEFCAKE & DINO BRAVO (w/ Johnny V). This match is a wild one, as plenty of times throughout the match, we end up with some, or all, of the 8 participants in the ring at the same time.
Late in the match, there’s some commotion, and someone makes their way down the aisle and towards ringside.
THE MOUTH OF THE SOUTH, JIMMY HART.
HART only stays ringside for a few minutes, and seems to be scouting the 8 men involved in the match.
The match ends when Bret Hart knocks Brutus Beefcake off the apron and to the floor. This gives Dino Bravo, the legal man in the match, the chance to attack Bret from behind. With Brutus on the floor, Bravo goes to whip Hart into the ropes, but Bret reverses it, and sends Bravo into the ropes instead. Brutus, thinking it was Hart being shot into the ropes, reaches under the bottom rope and trips Bravo, while jawing with some ringside fans. When Bravo turns his attention to Brutus, Beefcake realizes his mistake, but as Bravo yells at him, Hart rolls Bravo up for the pinfall.
Bravo and Beefcake argue a little bit after the match, but Johnny V is able to smooth things over, and the Dream Team leave the ring together.
On commentary, Vince says that it appears there may be some trouble in paradise for the Dream Team!
VINCE, GORILLA and JESSE wrap things up, and Vince hypes next week’s show, which will feature a rematch from last week, between IC champion Don Muraco and Jimmy Snuka, with the title on the line!
