THE WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION
TUESDAY, JULY 8, 1985
FROM SULLIVAN STADIUM IN FOXBOROUGH, MA
Ring Announcer HOWARD FINKEL thanks the fans for coming out this evening, and says that tonight’s show is a special one, as 8 of the top WWF superstars will face off in a tournament to crown the first ever King of the Ring!
KING OF THE RING QUARTER-FINAL:
THE JUNKYARD DOG beats BIG JOHN STUDD (w/ Classy Freddie Blassie) by pinfall. Despite Studd’s size advantage, JYD’s brawling tactics were enough to give him at least a fighting chance. In the end, as Studd had the match in hand, ANDRE THE GIANT made his way to ringside, on crutches. Andre got Studd’s attention, and the two jawed back and forth. This allowed JYD to roll Studd up from behind, catching the big man by surprise, and JYD gets the 1, 2, 3!
KING OF THE RING QUARTER-FINAL:
DON MURACO (w/ Mr. Fuji) beats GEORGE “THE ANIMAL” STEELE (w/ Capt. Lou Albano) by pinfall. Steele gives the Intercontinental champ all he can handle here. But in the end, Muraco’s unhanded tactics give him the upper hand. After dropping Steele with a low blow, Muraco puts the boots to the Animal, and moments later, drops Steele on his head with the reverse piledriver.
KING OF THE RING QUARTER-FINAL:
“SUPERFLY” JIMMY SNUKA beats RAYMOND ROUGEAU (w/ Armand Rougeau) by pinfall. Rougeau, a tag team wrestler, seems a little out of his element here in this singles match. Snuka gets the win after dropping Rougeau with a jumping headbutt, then delivers the Superfly splash.
KING OF THE RING QUARTER-FINAL:
BOB ORTON JR beats TOM ZENK by pinfall. Orton’s return match after a 3-year absence is a successful one, though Zenk gives him a run for his money. Zenk is considered to be a future superstar in this sport, and he shows why here, as he uses sound technical wrestling, with some high-flying thrown in, to keep Orton guessing early. Orton, however, goes hold for hold with Zenk, and eventually gains the upper hand. Orton wears Zenk down, and hits the Superplex for the pinfall.
KING OF THE RING SEMI-FINAL:
DON MURACO (w/ Mr. Fuji) beats THE JUNKYARD DOG by pinfall. JYD took a beating at the start of the match, after being attacked by Muraco before the bell. However, the Dog turned the tables a few minutes in, and the next several minutes were all JYD as he pummeled Muraco from pillar to post. Late in the match, Muraco rakes the eyes of the Dog to take control, but his advantage is short-lived as JYD battles back and stuns Muraco with a series of headbutts. Mr. Fuji ends up being the deciding factor in this one. After dropping Muraco with the headbutts, JYD runs the ropes, but Mr. Fuji reaches under the bottom rope and trips JYD with his cane. When JYD gets up, he turns his attention to Fuji, allowing Muraco to deliver a low blow. Muraco then drops the Dog on his head with the reverse piledriver for the 1, 2, 3.
KING OF THE RING SEMI-FINAL:
“SUPERFLY” JIMMY SNUKA beats BOB ORTON JR by pinfall. This is an action-packed affair, as these two go tooth and nail for more than 20 minutes. The momentum shifts constantly throughout the match, but in the end, it’s Jimmy Snuka who gets his hand raised after putting Orton on the mat with a picture-perfect dropkick, then hits the Superfly splash for the 1, 2, 3 to advance to the finals.
NON-TOURNAMENT MATCH:
BRUNO SAMMARTINO beats EDDIE ANDELMANN by pinfall. Andelmann, a local sportscaster, spent the last month hyping this match up in newspapers and during various sporting events. He put Bruno over as a wrestling legend, but felt that he could take him, and urged fans to come out and see the match.
As could be expected, it wasn’t much of a wrestling match, but Andelmann comes into the match prepared, and surprises Bruno with some wrestling holds. At about the 6-minute mark, Bruno gets the win after lifting Andelmann up into an Airplane spin and then dropping him to the mat and pinning him.
Afterwards, the two men shook hands, and posed for pictures together as several photographers joined them in the ring.
KING OF THE RING FINAL:
“SUPERFLY” JIMMY SNUKA beats DON MURACO (w/ Mr. Fuji) by pinfall. This is the third match of the evening for both Snuka and Muraco, but you wouldn’t know it from watching them, as they tear into each other as soon as the bell sounds. Snuka gains the early advantage, but Muraco battles back, and spends the next several minutes dishing out a vicious beating. Things are looking bleak for Snuka, as Muraco continues to attack, not giving the Superfly a chance to recover. Out of nowhere, Snuka gets a second wind, and stuns Muraco with a series of chops, then delivers a headbutt, then another, and a third. That puts Muraco on the mat, and Snuka covers him, but only gets a 2-count. Snuka whips Muraco into the corner, then follows him in with a clothesline. Snuka then climbs to the second turnbuckle and repeatedly punches Muraco in the head as the crowd counts along.
When Snuka stops punching Muraco, the IC champion stumbles out of the corner, in a daze . . . and falls flat on his face on the mat. As Muraco rolls over onto his back, Snuka goes to the top rope . . . and connects with the Superfly splash! Snuka hooks Muraco’s leg, and picks up the 1, 2, 3!
JIMMY SNUKA IS THE 1985 KING OF THE RING!!!
WWF WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE, STEEL CAGE MATCH:
HULK HOGAN (Champ) beats “ROWDY” RODDY PIPER. Piper jaws with some ringside fans after climbing into the cage. “Real American” plays over the PA system, and the Hulkster storms the ring. Hogan jumps into the cage and immediately tears into Piper! Piper hasn’t even had time to remove his t-shirt and kilt! Hogan pulls Piper’s belt off, and repeatedly whips Hot Rod with it!
Piper is the first to taste the steel, as Hogan grabs Piper by the hair, and sends him head-first into one side of the cage, then works his way around the cage, sending Piper’s face into each side of the cage. By the time Piper pulls himself up off the mat, blood has started running down his face! Hogan grabs Piper by the hair again, and repeatedly slams Hot Rod’s head into the mat.
Piper is able to turn the tables, though, hitting a low blow on Hogan. After taking a minute to shake off the cobwebs, Piper puts the boots to the fallen champion. Piper then calls for the ref to open the door, but as Piper gets to the door, Hogan grabs him and pulls him back to the middle of the ring, where the two trade punches. Hogan gets the better of Piper, but Roddy responds by jabbing a thumb in Hogan’s eye, stopping the champion dead in his tracks. Piper then sends Hogan face-first into the cage, even going so far as to grind Hogan’s face against the bars, and now Hogan has been busted open as well!
Piper then attempts to leave the cage through the door, but Hogan catches him. Piper hits Hogan with some rights and lefts, but Hogan responds with a big haymaker of his own that puts Piper flat on his back on the mat. Hogan wipes the blood out of his eyes, then heads for the door, but Piper catches him at the last second, and drags the Hulkster back inside the cage.
Piper drops Hogan to the mat with rights and lefts, and heads up the side of the cage. Hogan climbs up beside Piper and punches him in the ribs. Hogan then continues his climb, but Piper follows him up. At the top of the cage, the two trade punches, with Hogan eventually getting the upper hand. He delivers a big right hand, that sends Piper tumbling down to the mat. Piper lands on the ropes, before falling to the mat, the way he hits the ropes causes the ropes to twist around his leg, trapping Piper. Seeing his opponent incapacitated, Hogan continues up over the top of the cage, and down the other side, reaching the grass!
HULK HOGAN HAS DEFEATED RODDY PIPER IN THIS STEEL CAGE MATCH!!!
The bell sounds, and the referee raises Hogan’s arm in victory as Piper finally gets his leg untangled from the ropes, and throws a fit inside the ring.
