GORILLA MONSOON, JESSE “THE BODY” VENTURA and VINCE MCMAHON are ringside to open the show, and they welcome us to another episode of WWF SUPERSTARS OF WRESTLING!
This week, we’ll see the likes of the Junkyard Dog, George “the Animal” Steele, the Hart Foundation, Uncle Elmer, King Kong Bundy and the new WWF Tag Team champions the Dream Team in action!
Plus, “Cowboy” Bob Orton Jr makes his return to the WWF, the last time we saw the Cowboy in a WWF ring was the fall of 1982.
Roddy Piper will have “Big Nasty” Angelo Mosca as his guest this week on Piper’s Pit!
And, the big main event will see “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka challenge Don Muraco for the WWF IC title!
THE JUNKYARD DOG & GEORGE “THE ANIMAL” STEELE (w/ Capt. Lou Albano) defeat GEORGE SOUTH & FRANKIE LAINE. JYD and Steele make short work of their opponents. JYD gets the win for his team, catching Frankie Laine with the powerslam for the 1, 2, 3.
VINCE sends us to MEAN GENE OKERLUND for the WWF UPDATE.
OKERLUND says that this week, the WWF Update will focus on a man that just recently made his debut in the WWF, but has had a lot of success in other regions of the United States, a man known as the Mad Russian, Alexi Smirnoff!
Footage is shown of Alexi Smirnoff in action, including his match last week on Superstars, where he demolished Ati Tago with the devastating heart punch, and then chased ring announcer Howard Finkel out of the ring.
GENE says that Smirnoff has stated that his goal is not money or titles, he simply wants to end the career of each and every man he steps in the ring with.
We then go to pre-recorded comments from ALEXI SMIRNOFF.
SMIRNOFF talks about spending his early adult years in a Siberian prison, where he was a champion bare-knuckle fighter, and claims to have taken more than one life during these fights.
ALEXI then talks about his hatred for the Western world, particularly the United States, and says that he will break not only the body, but the spirit, of any wrestler he steps in the ring with.
MEAN GENE says that he doesn’t envy anyone who has to stand across the ring from that man.
“COWBOY” BOB ORTON JR beats SALVATORE BELLOMO. Orton, making his return to the WWF after a nearly 3-year absence, is at the top of his game. He methodically wears Bellomo down, and connects with a Superplex for the pinfall victory at the 2-minute mark.
On commentary, Vince, Jesse and Gorilla discuss Orton, with Jesse putting him over as one of the top wrestlers in the world, and saying that he can’t wait to see Orton get his hands on the likes of Hulk Hogan and Jimmy Snuka!
THE HART FOUNDATION (Bret Hart & Jim “the Anvil” Neidhart defeat BARRY BRUNO & DAVE BARBIE. The Hart Foundation have become a very popular team since arriving in the WWF. They get the win here, when Bret pins Barbie after Bret and Neidhart delivered the Hart Attack.
An ad airs, hyping the new issue of WWF magazine, which features stories on George Steele being put through speech therapy by Capt. Lou Albano, an interview with King Kong Bundy, and cameras followed Mr. Fuji and the Magnificent Muraco on a shopping excursion along Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.
VINCE talks about one of the stories in the WWF Magazine, where Capt. Lou Albano was trying to help George Steele by taking him to speech therapy, but, as we’ll see in the magazine, it hasn’t been going well, so Capt. Lou decided to try something a little different. Albano took George to see Dr. Sigmund Ziff, for a little electroshock therapy! Let’s take a look . . .
UNCLE ELMER (w/ Hillbilly Jim) beats CHARLIE FULTON. Fulton throws everything but the kitchen sink at his 6’10”, 450 lbs. opponent, but it’s no use. Once Elmer gets ahold of Fulton, that’s all she wrote for Charlie. Elmer throws him around the ring like a ragdoll, and delivers a huge splash for the 1, 2, 3 at the 90-second mark.
MEAN GENE OKERLUND is standing in front of a WWF banner. He hypes upcoming events, with fans seeing localized promos for their particular market.
GENE then talks about a big show coming up on July 8. The WWF will be in Foxborough, Massachussetts for a big outdoor show at Sullivan stadium, the home of the NFL’s New England Patriots!
This show, which the WWF is calling the “King of the Ring”, will feature 8 of the top superstars in the WWF, squaring off in a tournament to determine the true king of the ring!
GENE then runs down the list of wrestlers that will participate in the tournament . . . The Junkyard Dog . . . Big John Studd . . . WWF IC champ Don Muraco . . . George “the Animal” Steele . . . “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka . . . Raymond Rougeau . . . a man making his return to the WWF, “Cowboy” Bob Orton Jr . . . and finally, former Tag Team champ Tom Zenk.
Plus, two non-tournament matches have been signed. The first is a special attraction, with Bruno Sammartino squaring off against Eddie Andelmann, a local sportscaster!
And, the HUGE main event that has been signed for the show, a WWF title match between Hulk Hogan and Roddy Piper . . . inside a 15 foot high STEEL CAGE!
Promos are shown from Hogan and Piper, talking about their cage match, and sportscaster Eddie Andelmann regarding his exhibition match against Bruno Sammartino.
KING KONG BUNDY (w/ Classy Freddie Blassie) beats FRANKIE WILLIAMS. Bundy squashes his opponent, and delivers the Avalanche, followed by a splash, for the pinfall at the 1-minute mark.
NON-TITLE MATCH:
THE DREAM TEAM (Dino Bravo & Brutus Beefcake) (w/ Johnny V) defeat NICK DECARLO & BOB MARCUS. The Dream Team gets the win at about the 3-minute mark, when Brutus hits DeCarlo with the flying kneelift and pins him.
VINCE, GORILLA and JESSE send us to “ROWDY” RODDY PIPER, for another edition of PIPER’S PIT.
PIPER introduces this week’s guest . . . “BIG NASTY” ANGELO MOSCA!
PIPER shakes Mosca’s hand when Angelo comes out, and then talks about what Mosca did to Gorilla Monsoon last week, saying it was one of the greatest things he’s ever seen!
MOSCA says that Monsoon thinks that just because he’s not an active wrestler anymore, that means he can just run his mouth and say whatever he wants, but that ain’t gonna fly with Angelo Mosca!
At that point, WWF President JACK TUNNEY makes his way onto the set.
PIPER tells Tunney to get lost, this is Piper’s show, and Tunney has no right to be out here.
TUNNEY ignores Piper, and addresses Mosca, saying that as a result of Mosca’s unprovoked attack last week, the WWF has fined Mosca $5,000!
MOSCA just laughs, and asks Tunney if he thinks that means anything to him? He says he doesn’t care about the money, he’ll pay that fine, and then go and knock Monsoon around some more! Mosca then tells Tunney to get off the set, while he’s still able to walk!
TUNNEY tells Mosca to watch himself, and leaves the set.
MOSCA continues to run down Gorilla Monsoon, and challenges Monsoon to face him in the ring, as the segment comes to an end.
WWF INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE MATCH
“SUPERFLY” JIMMY SNUKA beats DON MURACO (Champ) (w/ Mr. Fuji) by Count-Out. Muraco and Snuka tear into each other as soon as the bell sounds, and don’t let up at all. At about the 5-minute mark, the match moves to the floor, where Snuka gets the upper hand. Snuka repeatedly slams Muraco’s head into the ring apron, then delivers two headbutts, followed by a jumping headbutt. That puts Muraco flat on his back on the arena floor, and Snuka climbs back into the ring, just in time to beat the count, and is declared the winner!
VINCE, GORILLA and JESSE wrap things up, and Vince hypes next week’s show.
