MID SOUTH WRESTLING
TV FOR WEEKEND OFJUNE 14, 1985
TAPED JUNE 11, 1985
IRISH MCNEIL BOY’S CLUB
SHREVEPORT, LA
ANNOUNCERS: JIM ROSS & COWBOY BILL WATTS
RING ANNOUNCER: MIKE MCGUIRK
REFEREES: Alfred Neely, Jerry Usher, Joel Armstrong
Jim & Bill are at the desk. As they are about to run down today’s program, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, still wearing a bandage on his forehead from last week’s match with Stan Hansen, comes to the desk…
DUGGAN: Jim, Bill, I got something to say!
ROSS: Go right ahead, Jim!
DUGGAN: Bill, I see that big Texan, Stan Hansen, up in the ring with Ken Mantell! I’m sick and tired of that big goof! At this big deal you’re having at the Superdome, I want my turn at swinging that big, rusty bell at his empty head! I want a bullrope match with Stan Hansen at the Superdome! I usually just wrestle whoever you put in front of me, but I’m demanding a bullrope match with Stan Hansen at the Superdome on July 6th!
WATTS: Jim, I admire your courage and your toughness. Normally, I’d say “Let’s hook’em up!” But you’ve already lost a bunch of blood going against Hansen and you would be playing right into his hands by getting into a match that is his specialty….
DUGGAN: Bill, I want the match! I demand the match! I’ve got to settle this feud with Stan Hansen!
WATTS: I’ll consider it, Jim!
DUGGAN: Make it happen, Bill Watts!
Duggan storms away!
ROSS: The man who Jim Duggan asked for is up in the ring for what should be a great match!
Stan Hansen(w/Ken Mantell) takes on Ernie Ladd. With the crowd behind him, “the Big Cat” gives the rugged Texan all he wants, but Hansen gets the win after flattening Ladd with the lariat! After the match, Hansen and Mantell make their way to the desk…
ROSS: a most impressive win for Stan Hansen here this week…
MANTELL: Watts, I know you are biased and you’ve always had your picks around here, but I never thought I’d see the day when you would blatantly protect Hacksaw Jim Duggan like you just did! That’s why a man like you should never be President of Mid South Wrestling and I should be!
HANSEN: Duggan, you should thank this man! He probably saved your career, boy!
WATTS: Ok, that rips it! I’m not going to sit here and have my integrity questioned! I don’t want to be responsible for somebody’s career being ended, but if two men want to fight, I won’t stand in their way! Go to Grizzly Smith and he’ll sign the bullrope match for the Superdome on July 6th!
ROSS: That’s huge news, folks!
WATTS: I just hope I haven’t made a big mistake….
ROSS: We’ll be right back!

VTR:
Ric Flair, dressed in a custom made suit and tie, is standing in front of the NWA logo, holding his title belt in the crook of his arm…
FLAIR: All of the women in New Orleans have been wondering, “When is the Nature Boy coming back to town?” Well, wonder, no more ladies! On July 6th, I’m going to sell out the Superdome, something the Saints can only dream of! Grizzly Smith, I want you to have me a big time opponent to give a wrestling lesson to! Jim Duggan! Butch Reed! That phony Nature Boy, Buddy Landel can even walk that aisle if he has the guts! Hey, you can even bring in Von Erich from Dallas and I’ll slap him around again! Bill Watts, you can even get those boots and tights out of mothballs, big man! It doesn’t matter to me! I’ll fly in on my Lear jet, I’ll kick butt in front of a packed Superdome, and then I’ll throw a party like the Big Easy has never seen! And when I’m done, all they will say is “What’s causin all this?” And the ladies will scream, “WOOOOOOOOO! SLICK RIC! WOOOOOOOOOO!”
WATTS: Well, I think the Nature Boy is overlooking somebody and that could be a costly mistake. We had representatives of the NWA here last week and they were very impressed by Magnum TA’s victory over the great Japanese star Tenryu. As a result, they recommended to Jim Crockett that Magnum TA be granted the World Title match on July 6 at the Superdome Summer Spectacular! That will be the MAIN EVENT! MAGNUM TA CHALLENGES RIC FLAIR FOR THE NWA WORLD TITLE!!!!
ROSS: Later on today, Magnum will wrestle Kevin Sullivan’s “dark soldier” Purple Haze, in a match made even more intriguing by Kevin Sullivan’s recent remarks regarding TA and his mentor, “the American Dream” Dusty Rhodes. Right now, Mike Davis is in the ring to challenge Hacksaw Jim Duggan for the Mid South TV Title.
Mike Davis takes on Hacksaw Jim Duggan for Duggan’s TV belt. Davis attacks Duggan at the bell and tries to rip the bandage off of Duggan’s forehead! Duggan just gets fired up by all of that and launches into a foot stomping, tail kicking comeback! Duggan finally hits the spear and flattens Davis for the 1-2-3!
ROSS: Hacksaw is headed this way…
Duggan walks to the desk and shakes hands with Watts!
DUGGAN: Cowboy, I know you are only trying to do what’s right and I respect you for that! But I need to settle this thing with Hansen man to man! On July 6th, I’ll do just that!
WATTS: I know you will, Jim!
ROSS: When we come back, the Zambuie Express will wrestle and we’ll have an announcement about the Mid South tag Team Titles!

ROSS: Greg Gagne, former Mid South tag Team Champion, is here with us and< Bill, I understand that you have some news for Greg about July 6th.
WATTS: The current Tag Team Champions are the Love Train, John Tatum & Randy Rose. Ken Mantell’s team of the Zambuie Express is undefeated since arriving here in Mid South and Mantell feels that they deserve a title match on July 6th at the Dome. The Board of Governors, myself as President, and matchmaker Grizzly Smith agree. Due to this man’s breakup with Gerald Brisco, he has not had the opportunity to regain the belts that he helped defend in an honorable and scientific challenge. We believe that he deserves that opportunity. The Brisco Brothers have reformed their team after Greg Gagne and Gerald Brisco split. Since they have started competing in Mid South, Jack & Gerald Brisco are also undefeated and we think they are entitled to a match for the belts. The Mid South Board of Governors have decided to hold an unprecedented four team elimination match for the title on July 6th at the Superdome Summer Spectacular! Greg, you will be in that match with a partner of your choosing. I understand that you are ready to reveal that man’s name at this time…
GAGNE: Bill, normally, I would look to a scientific wrestler like Jim Brunzell or Brad Rheingans, but there’s an old saying “Father knows best”. When Dad was in a situation when his back was against the wall and he needed to take care of business, he called one man. I just called that man myself! I know you can tell everybody how tough he is! Roll the tape!
VTR:
Standing in a ring in an empty arena with a chain around his neck, it’s....
MAD DOG VACHON!!!!!
VACHON: Greg Gagne said he needed a partner in New Orleans! He mentioned the Brisco brothers! When Jack Brisco was World Champion, he took on all comers, but there was one wrestler he avoided…MAD DOG VACHON! This time, you can’t avois me! Then, there is the Zambuie Express, two huge men, both over 440 pounds with a weasel manager! Every man is the same size when he is lying on his back, Zambuie Express! Then, there is this sissy manager and his prissy tag team champions! The Mad Dog will rip you clowns apart! I have never wrestled in New Orleans, but I look forward to it! I understand there are many people who speak French like I do! I know you will understand this: C'est un chien mange monde canin !
WATTS: One of the toughest men I have ever met, maybe the toughest. Good choice, Greg!Right now, Ken Mantell is leading the Mantell Corporation’s tag team, the Zambuie Express to the ring. I know you’ll be interested in seeing them.
The Zambuie Express, Elijah Akeem & Kareem Muhammad(w/Ken Mantell)take on Chris Carter & Bill Ash. Carter & Ash are overwhelmed by the size, power, and brutality of the Express this week. Akeem pins Carter after a big elbow drop. Greg Gagne, who has set in on commentary, admits that they are impressive, but says he is confident that the Mad Dog is ready to take a bite out of them!

ROSS: I’m here with North American Champion Michael Hayes along with his Freebird brothers, Buddy Roberts and Terry “Bamm Bamm” Gordy. Michael, I understand that you feel that you have a grievance.
HAYES: Mr. Mid South President and modern day John Wayne, Bill Watts, I have a crow to pick with you, Cowboy!
Watts gets up from the desk and walks over to the interview area!
HAYES: JULY 6TH! Superdome Spectacular! Flair knows who he will defend against! Love Train knows who they defend against! I’m signed to defend this title and I have no idea who my opponent will be! When do you and that goofy Grizzly Smith intend on letting me know?
WATTS: You’ll know next week. There are so many contenders that the Board of Governors have decided to determine your opponent by a battle royal here on TV next week!
HAYES: Well, can I at least know who is in this thing?
WATTS: (pulls a sheet of paper from a jacket pocket and reads from a list) Fomer NWA Champion Jack Brisco, Gerald Brisco, Canadian star Iron Mike Sharpe, from the Valiant wrestling family, Gentleman Jerry Valiant, Tiger Conway, Jr., Nelson Royal, Chavo Guerrero, both members of the Zambuie Express, Hacksaw Butch Reed, Tony “Mr. USA” Atlas, Jumbo Tsuruta of the Mantell Corporation, Wendell Cooley, Baba and Tenryu from Japan, “Big Cat” Ernie Ladd, Big Tug Taylor, and last, but certainly not least, Buddy Roberts and Terry Gordy!
Gordy gets a big grin on his face, Roberts seems surprised, but Hayes is visibly upset.
HAYES: My brothers are in a battle royal for a match AGAINST ME?
WATTS: Are you saying they aren’t worthy contenders, Michael?
HAYES: Don’t try to stir up trouble, Roy Rogers! (to Buddy & Terry) Look, boys, you know this belt is FREEBIRD PROPERTY! As long as I hold it, we hold it!
GORDY: But, Mike, you ain’t the one that the Japanese promoters are offering double money to if he comes in with a belt on his next tour!
HAYES: Look, Terry, I’ve been on the phone with Ed Watt in Dallas trying to get you title matches down there. Jim Duggan is ducking you for the TV Title around here! You’ll get a title, brother! Just give it time! Next week, I need you two working for the Freebirds in that battle royal! Do what you need to do to make things go smooth for me at the Superdome!
GORDY: Mike, I can win that thing and you know it!
ROBERTS: OK, ok, we’ll work this thing out! What we don’t need to do is discuss Freebird business on camera in front of all of the rednecks in Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Arkansas!
HAYES: C’mon, guys, let’s go find some women and something cold and 90 proof!
The Freebirds leave the set as Watts shakes his head.
WATTS: With the list of names that I read, Hayes had better start getting ready for a tough opponent at the Superdome, regardless of what Roberts and Gordy do next week!
ROSS: Magnum TA against “Purple Haze” Mark Lewin up next!
COMMERCIAL
The Purple Haze enters the ring with no sign of Kevin Sullivan anywhere. Magnum TA follows him to a standing ovation! Haze attacks TA during the introductions, leaving lovely Mike McGuirk to scurry out of the ring. Lewin dominates the action, but Magnum manages to hit the belly to belly and go for the pin! One….Two….KEVIN SULLIVAN AND LORD HUMONGOUS HIT THE RING AND ATTACK TA! It’s 3 on 1 and they really doing a number on Magnum! Humongous has the cobra clutch on Magnum! Magnum looks like he’s going under as the masked man swings him around in the hold like a rag doll! Finally, Humongous just drops Magnum onto the mat! As TA is lying there on his back, Sullivan hits the double stomp! Finally, Jim Duggan, Butch Reed, Tony Atlas, & Greg Gagne run in and Sullivan and his dark soldiers retreat!
COMMERCIAL
Butch Reed has stayed in the ring and Tony Atlas is in his corner giving advice when his opponent’s music plays…
Buddy Landel strolls out in an Olivia Walker original with Missy Hyatt walking behind him in a sequined top, miniskirt and heels. Landel asks Mike McGuirk for the mic.
LANDEL: Tony Atlas, if you even give this gorgeous woman a sideways look, I’ll pull you into the ring and stretch your musclebound body until you beg for mercy!
“Nature Boy” Buddy Landel takes on Hacksaw Butch Reed in a rematch of a bout where Landel scored a big upset. This is a closely fought contest, but Reed’s power slowly starts to win out. Missy attempts to pass her Gucci bag into Landel, but Atlas walks over and shoos her away. Atlas didn’t even touch her, but Missy screams bloody murder anyway! ONE MAN GANG ATTACKS ATALS FROM BEHIND WITH HIS CHAIN! GANG IS LAYING A VICIOUS BEATDOWN ON ATLAS! Reed tries to get out to help his friend! Missy tosses the Gucci bag to Landel! Buddy Kos Reed with the bag! The ref DQs Buddy Landel! What does she carry in that purse! While OMG beats Atlas down at ringside, Landel dops the corkscrew elbow onto the fallen Reed! Now, Landel applies the figure four on Reed! OMG climbs into the ring and, as Landel continues with the figure four, Gang drops a huge splash onto Reed’s chest! Missy applauds wildly as her men leave the ring and walk over to a waiting Jim Ross….
LANDEL: I told’em, Jimbo, but they just wouldn’t listen! I told them that he was coming and now, it’s hey, hey, the Gang’s all here!
MISSY: Daddy told me that he wouldn’t let that nasty Butch Reed or that ugly TonyAtlas lay a finger on me! I’ve got the real Nature Boy and the biggest, toughest, meanest wrestler in the whole wide world! What more could a girl ask for?
OMG: I’ve heard all about Tony “USA” Atlas…That was him? And Butch Reed…one of the biggest, strongest wrestlers in the world…I didn’t see anything that impressed me. There are winos on Halstead Street that would be harder to roll than those two! Mr. Hyatt, this is like a vacation! Missy, I had so much fun, I should give your daddy’s money back to him!
LANDEL: Bill Watts, I’ll make a suggestion: Since Ric Flair is a coward and a phony Nature Boy and wants to duck me for Magnum TA, why don’t you and Grizzly Smith make a match with me and the Gang here against Reed and Atlas at the Summer Spectacular! Since Reed likes to brag about Ghetto Street Fights, let’s make it one of those! Look really close, people…the Nature Boy, the One Man Gang, and the beautiful Missy Hyatt, the three people who will rule Mid South Wrestling!
ROSS: Next week, another action packed hour! The battle Royal to determine Michael Hayes’ North American Title Challenger at the Superdome! One Man Gang in a match! A rematch between Magnum TA and the Purple Haze, Greg Gagne against former partner Jerry Brisco! Wendell Cooley will wrestle Chris Colt and rugged Mike George will take on Bill Ash. All of that next week on Mid South Wrestling!
