THE WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION PRESENTS
SATURDAY, JUNE 28, 1985
TAPED JUNE 12 AT THE CENTRUM IN WORCESTER, MA
GORILLA MONSOON, JESSE “THE BODY” VENTURA and VINCE MCMAHON are ringside to open the show, and they welcome us to another episode of WWF SUPERSTARS OF WRESTLING!
This week, we’ll see the likes of the Junkyard Dog, the Killer Bees, WWF IC Champion Don Muraco, and the Hart Foundation in action!
Plus, the “Mad Russian” Alexi Smirnoff makes his WWF debut this week!
And, in the main event, Hillbilly Jim looks to avenge the injury to his friend, Andre the Giant, as he takes on King Kong Bundy!
THE JUNKYARD DOG beats GEORGE SOUTH. JYD makes short work of South, putting him away with a powerslam.
VINCE sends us to MEAN GENE OKERLUND for the WWF UPDATE.
OKERLUND says that this week, the WWF Update will focus on a man that WWF fans know well, a man who has had some dust-ups with Gorilla Monsoon in previous week, the man they call “Big Nasty”, Angelo Mosca!
Footage is shown of Mosca in action in the WWF, both in his run during the early 80s, as well as his current run in the northeast.
GENE says that there are few people who’s nicknames are more fitting than Angelo Mosca, he says that Big Nasty fits Mosca like a glove! The man always seems to be in a bad mood, and Mosca has repeatedly said that the only thing in life he gets any enjoyment out of is hurting people!
Footage is shown of Mosca’s late hit on the B.C. Lions’ Willie Fleming in the 1963 Grey Cup game in Canada.
GENE says that hit on Fleming is one of the reasons why Mosca was known as the meanest, and dirtiest, player to ever play in the Canadian Football League! Okerlund says that attitude has stayed with Mosca during his pro wrestling career as well.
Footage is then shown of Mosca brawling with Gorilla Monsoon at the end of the match a few weeks ago where Andre the Giant had his leg broken by Big John Studd and King Kong Bundy.
OKERLUND then sends us to pre-recorded comments from Angelo Mosca.
MOSCA says that he walks, he talks, and he does what he wants, and anyone that gets in his way will end up in a hospital bed, and that includes that washed-up jerk, Gorilla Monsoon!
Back at ringside, GORILLA talks about Angelo Mosca, and says that Mosca’s nothing but a bully, but he can’t bully Monsoon!
ANGELO MOSCA stoms out to ringside!
MOSCA gets in Monsoon’s face, and as the two argue, Mosca grabs the water pitcher from the table . . . AND SMASHES MONSOON OVER THE HEAD WITH IT!!!
Water goes everywhere, and Monsoon drops like a sack of potatoes. Vince yells for security, and medical personnel, but Mosca leaves on his own, a big smile on his face!
“THE MAD RUSSIAN” ALEXI SMIRNOFF beats ATI TAGO. Smirnoff jumps Tago as soon as the match starts, and spends the next few minutes pounding him into the mat. Tago gets no offence in whatsoever. After a few minutes of toying with his hapless opponent, Smirnoff drops Tago with a vicious heart punch, and gets the 1, 2, 3.
After the match, as Howard Finkel announces Smirnoff as the winner, the Mad Russian swings the chain he carries to the ring, and chases Finkel from the ring!
VINCE and JESSE talk about what took place before the last match, involving their colleague Gorilla Monsoon and Angelo Mosca. Vince says Mosca’s actions were despicable, especially considering that Monsoon is no longer an active wrestler, he’s a commentator! Vince thinks that WWF President Jack Tunney will have something to say about Mosca’s actions!
JESSE, on the other hand, says that Monsoon brought it on himself, he had no right badmouthing Mosca like he has been, and he says that Mosca was simply standing up for himself!
VINCE says that Monsoon has been taken to the back, so that the medical team can check him out.
An ad airs, hyping the new issue of WWF magazine, which features stories like George "the Animal" Steele being put through speech therapy by Capt. Lou Albano, an interview with King Kong Bundy, and cameras followed Mr. Fuji and the Magnificent Muraco on a shopping excursion along Fifth Avenue in Manhattan!
THE KILLER BEES (B. Brian Blair & Jim Brunzell) defeat MARK RAGIN & DAVE BARBIE. The Killer Bees have been on a roll since arriving in the WWF, and they continue that here, as Brunzell whips Ragin into the ropes, and catches him with a picture-perfect standing dropkick for the 1, 2, 3.
VINCE and JESSE talk about the Bees, with all three men putting them over as a great team (although, relunctantly in Jesse’s case), and Vince says that they have to be considered among the top contenders to the WWF Tag Team titles.
VINCE says that, speaking of the WWF Tag Team titles, new champions were crowned this past Monday night at Madison Square Garden!
Footage is shown of the Dream Team, Brutus Beefcake and Dino Bravo, defeating the Can-Am Express for the Tag Team titles. The Dream Team got the win when Bravo pinned Phil Lafleur after Brutus stuck Johnny V’ lit cigar into Lafleur’s eye.
We then go to pre-taped comments from JOHNNY V and the new WWF Tag Team champions THE DREAM TEAM.
JOHNNY V gloats about the win, saying he told everyone that it was only a matter of time before his men were wearing the gold, and low and behold, here they are, as the new WWF Tag Team champions!
BRAVO says that all the little girls out there in TV land may go crazy for the Can-Am Express, but when it comes to actual wrestling ability, those punks just don’t compare to him and Brutus. Dino says that there isn’t a team in the WWF that can beat them and take these belts!
BRUTUS admires his belt for a minute, and says that Bravo’s right, what other teams are there that even stand a chance against them? The Killer Bees? The Hart Foundation? He just laughs and says that he and Bravo are in a whole other league! He says that the fans had better get used to seeing them with these belts, because they’re going to be holding them for a long, long time!
NON-TITLE MATCH
“THE MAGNIFICENT ONE” DON MURACO (w/ Mr. Fuji) beats NICK DECARLO. Muraco just toys with DeCarlo here, he slaps the young man to the mat, then kicks him every time DeCarlo tries to get back to his feet. Finally, Muraco puts DeCarlo away with the reverse piledriver. Muraco gets the 3-count by placing a foot on DeCarlo’s chest.
MEAN GENE OKERLUND is standing in front of a WWF banner. He hypes upcoming events, with fans seeing localized promos for their particular market.
GENE then talks about a big show coming up on July 8. The WWF will be in Foxborough, Massachussetts for a big outdoor show at Sullivan stadium, the home of the NFL’s New England Patriots!
This show, which the WWF is calling the “King of the Ring”, will feature 8 of the top superstars in the WWF, squaring off in a tournament to determine the true king of the ring!
GENE then runs down the list of wrestlers that will participate in the tournament . . . The Junkyard Dog . . . Big John Studd . . . WWF IC champ Don Muraco . . . George “the Animal” Steele . . . “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka . . . Raymond Rougeau . . . a man making his return to the WWF, “Cowboy” Bob Orton Jr . . . and finally, former Tag Team champ Tom Zenk.
Plus, two non-tournament matches have been signed. The first is a special attraction, with Bruno Sammartino squaring off against Eddie Andelmann, a local sportscaster!
And, the HUGE main event that has been signed for the show, a WWF title match between Hulk Hogan and Roddy Piper . . . inside a 15 foot high STEEL CAGE!
Promos are shown from Hulk Hogan and Roddy Piper, talking about the cage match coming up on July 8.
THE HART FOUNDATION (Bret Hart & Jim “the Anvil” Neidhart) defeat ROCKY DELLA SERRA & REGGIE PARKS. Bret gets the win for the Hart Foundation at about the 4-minute mark, pinning Della Serra following the Hart Attack.
MEAN GENE OKERLUND is standing backstage with WWF World champion HULK HOGAN and “SUPERFLY” JIMMY SNUKA.
Footage is shown of the recent tag team match this past Monday night at Madison Square Garden. Snuka got the win for his team, pinning Muraco with the Superfly splash.
GENE congratulates Hogan and Snuka on the win, then talks about the next MSG card, coming up on Monday, July 14. On that card, Hogan will defend the WWF title against Don Muraco, though Muraco’s IC title won’t be on the line. Plus, Snuka will face Roddy Piper in a Fiji Strap match!
SNUKA talks about the upcoming match with Piper, and says that if there’s anything left of Piper after Hogan gets through with him in the cage on July 8, then he’s going to put an end to the Rowdy One in his type of match, the Fiji Strap match. Snuka then says that after he’s done with Piper, he wants Muraco and the IC title!
HOGAN says that Don Muraco has been a thorn in a lot of people’s side for a long time now, but on July 14, he’s going to send Muraco and Fuji packing, right out of the WWF!
KING KONG BUNDY (w/ Classy Freddie Blassie) beats HILLBILLY JIM (w/ Uncle Elmer). While waiting for Bundy to come to the ring, Hillbilly Jim takes the house mic from Howard Finkel, and says that he’s going to avenge the injury to Andre the Giant right here today!
Jim throws everything he’s got at Bundy, and gives the big man from Atlantic City some anxious moments, but in the end, Bundy connects with the Avalanche in the corner, with Freddie Blassie holding Jim so he can’t move out of the way. After that, Bundy slams Jim in the middle of the ring, and delivers a splash for good measure, before picking up the 1, 2, 3 at the 7-minute mark.
VINCE and JESSE wrap things up, and Vince hypes next week’s show.
