CWA CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING ‘85
Saturday, June 28, 1985
Hosts: Lance Russell and Dave Brown
Referees: Paul Morton & Jerry Calhoun
HIGHLIGHTS:
*Lance Russell and Dave Brown welcome the fans to Championship Wrestling ’85, and note they have CWA co-matchmaker Tom Renesto with them. VTR footage of Randy Savage being ejected from the Mid South Coliseum last Monday is shown. We go back to the studio as Tom Renesto reiterates that Randy Savage’s problems are being caused by the Macho Man and the Macho Man only. And they continued 10 minutes ago! Lance and Dave then throw to video of “Macho Man” Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth showing up at the Channel Five studios and threatening a security guard to get in the door. Renesto arrives with three Memphis PD officers and they threaten to arrest Savage again, but Eddie Marlin arrives on the scene and takes Savage aside to speak with him. After a moment or two, a seemingly-skeptical Savage nods and begins to back up. Macho Man shouts that Renesto will get his soon – and so will Killer Khan. We go back to the studio as Tom Renesto says that he does not appreciate Eddie Marlin getting involved in his business and mentions again that he does not work for Marlin! Renesto then announces a major match for this Monday night – Ted Dibiase will take on the original Assassin! Renesto teases a major announcement next week.
*Brand new Southern Tag Team Champions “Handsome” Jimmy Valiant and Tommy “Wildfire” Rich made their way out to the studio as ‘The Boy From New York City’ played. Valiant has his belt slung over his shoulder as he shakes hands with the fans, and The Boogie Woogie Man manages to give some the fans kisses as well. Tommy Rich celebrates his and Jimmy Valiant’s title win with Dave Brown, but they are soon interrupted by Jimmy Hart, his bodyguard and the PYT Express. Jimmy Hart says that a title match has been signed against the First Family for this Monday night! However, the Mouth of the South never specified which members of the First Family will be taking that match. Jimmy has gone out and gotten Koko B. Ware a shot at the Southern Heavyweight Champion Dutch Mantell, and Norvell Austin is busy with a well-deserved vacation to the Bahamas starting tomorrow. So, this Monday night, it will be Tommy Rich and Jimmy Valiant defending against the First Family’s bodyguard Big Bubba Rogers and the stable’s newest member… “Wild” Bill Irwin! Irwin makes his way out as Dave Brown notes his history in the territory in the past. Irwin and Rogers square off with a very game Jimmy Valiant and Tommy Rich, but Jimmy Hart leads his men away and says revenge will be his on Monday night!
*CWA Champion Jerry “The King” Lawler makes his way out to speak with Lance Russell. He once again reiterates his desire to get in the tournament to crown the #1 contender to the NWA World Heavyweight Title. Lawler wishes Dutch Mantell or Koko B. Ware the best of luck in their match this Monday, and says he looks forward to either of them battling Ric Flair in July. The winner of that match will have to face The King in August because there is no way he can be stopped in his quest to be the World Heavyweight Champion. “Superstar” Bill Dundee makes his way out now and says he has heard just about enough of Lawler telling everyone within earshot that this title match is already his. Dundee mentions that if Lawler loses the CWA Championship before the tournament, he might not even qualify! Lawler chuckles and asks if this is Bill Dundee’s way of asking for a title match? Dundee tells Lawler that if he had any guts, he’d put the title on the line so they could settle this feud once and for all. The King answers that all Dundee had to do was ask – he’ll sign on the dotted line for this Monday night. But after this Monday, he doesn’t want any more complaints from Bill because he IS going to lose The King and there’s no way around that!
*Ted Dibiase makes his way out to the desk and talks to Dave Brown about his match this Monday against the legendary Assassin. Dibiase tells Dave that he shook off any ring rust last Monday when he got a win over the former Southern Heavyweight Champion Phil Hickerson. Ted thinks a win like that might just get him in the title hunt here in the CWA, but he is happy to bide his time. This Monday, he will have The Assassin standing on the other side of the ring. He respects The Assassin – calling him perhaps the greatest tag team wrestler of all-time. However, this will be a singles match and Dibiase doesn’t have to remind anyone that he has been considered one of the top singles stars in the sport for years now, so he expects to come out on top. Dave Brown then asks about Dibiase’s investment in CWA, and questions if wrestling compromises his position as an investor. Dibiase doesn’t think so – he’s not making the matches. He has all the respect in the world for Tom Renesto and Renesto’s objectivity. Dave asks if he meant to include Eddie Marlin as well, and Dibiase nods and replies: “Oh, of course!” Right now, he has to deal with a very tough competitor – one half of The Wolverines, Dave “Fit” Finlay!
MATCHES:
1) Killer Khan (w/ Scandor Akbar) defeats Barry O at 2:51 by forcing the much-smaller opponent to submit to the nerve hold. Akbar is on commentary during the match and brags about “Macho Man” Randy Savage’s “little brother” Lanny Poffo being destroyed by Killer Khan.
2) ”Wild” Bill Irwin (w/ Jimmy Hart & Big Bubba Rogers) pinned The Marauder at 5:01 with a running lariat, followed by a big knee drop across the throat.
3) Koko B. Ware (w/ Jimmy Hart & Big Bubba Rogers) pinned Billy Joe Travis at 10:45 when he connected with a flying dropkick off the top rope in our first of two TV Main Events.
4) Ted Dibiase pinned Dave “Fit” Finlay at 13:45 when he connected with a spinning neck-breaker when Finaly missed a flying cross-body block from the second rope.
