THE WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION PRESENTS
SATURDAY, JUNE 7, 1985
TAPED MAY 20 AT THE MEMORIAL AUDITORIUM IN UTICA, NY
GORILLA MONSOON, JESSE “THE BODY” VENTURA and VINCE MCMAHON are ringside to open the show, and they welcome us to another episode of WWF SUPERSTARS OF WRESTLING!
This week, we’ll see the likes of the Islanders, George “the Animal” Steele, King Kong Bundy and Jimmy Snuka in action!
Plus, Don Muraco and Mr. Fuji will be the guests on Piper’s Pit this week, and Muraco has stated that fans will be treated to the world premier of his and Fuji’s acting debut, “Fuji Vice”!
We’ll recap what happened last week, regarding the attack on Andre the Giant at the hands of King Kong Bundy and Big John Studd.
And, another big main event is signed for this week, as Don Muraco faces the Junkyard Dog in a non-title match!
THE ISLANDERS (Haku & Tama) (w/ Mr. Fuji) defeat ANDRE LAGO & JOSE LUIS RIVERA. The Islanders make short work of their opponents, with Lago and Rivera getting in next to no offence at all. Haku gets the pinfall for his team, after delivering a diving headbutt from the second turnbuckle on Lago.
As Haku covers Lago, on commentary, Jesse Ventura says Haku has the hardest head of anyone he’s ever seen, and says that being hit by his diving headbutt is comparable to being slammed in the head with a sledgehammer!
VINCE says he wouldn’t doubt it, he’s never seen anyone get up after suffering Haku’s diving headbutt, but that notwithstanding, the Islanders have a long road ahead of them if they want to regain the WWF Tag Team titles.
VINCE sends us to MEAN GENE OKERLUND for the WWF UPDATE.
OKERLUND is in the control room of a TV studio, and says that this week’s WWF Update will focus on the events that took place last week, where King Kong Bundy and Big John Studd brutally attacked Andre the Giant.
VTR: Last Week on Superstars of Wrestling:
Bundy and Mosca then leave the ring and attack Andre. Studd, Bundy and Mosca triple-team Andre, and throw him back into the ring.
At the broadcast table, GORILLA MONSOON decides that he’s seen enough of this, and charges ringside, brawling with Angelo Mosca! Mosca and Monsoon brawl down the aisle and to the back.
Meanwhile, with Uncle Elmer down and out in the ring, and Hillbilly Jim on the floor outside the ring, Studd and Bundy continue to work over Andre the Giant. Bundy whips Andre into the corner, and delivers the Avalanche.
Then, as Studd holds Andre’s leg, Bundy delivers a splash off the ropes, onto Andre’s leg! The Giant howls in pain as Bundy delivers a second splash!!!
While that’s going on, Uncle Elmer has rolled out of the ring, to the floor, and he and Hillbilly Jim are starting to shake off the cobwebs. When they realize what’s going on inside the ring, Jim and Elmer each grab a chair, and chase Bundy and Studd from the ring.
Jim and Elmer try to help Andre up, but it’s obvious that the Giant can’t put any weight on his leg.
OKERLUND says that we now know that Andre suffered a broken leg as a result of that cowardly attack.
Photos are shown of Andre, laid up in a hospital bed.
We then go to pre-recorded comments from KING KONG BUNDY, BIG JOHN STUDD and CLASSY FREDDIE BLASSIE. They gloat about what they did to Andre, with Bundy saying Andre’s career is OVER, and Big John Studd says that he has proven, once and for all, that HE is the true giant of professional wrestling!
GENE says that next week, he’ll visit Andre’s home to talk with the Giant about the attack and what this means for his career.
Back at the broadcast table, VINCE, JESSE and GORILLA discuss what happened last week. Vince says that it was a despicable display by Bundy and Studd, and Gorilla calls for WWF President Jack Tunney to suspend them indefinitely. Jesse disagrees, saying that this is a violent sport, and Andre knew the risks that come with a career in professional wrestling.
A graphic then appears on the screen, with the address where fans can send cards to Andre and show their support.
An ad airs, hyping the WWF action figures, available wherever toys are sold.
GEORGE “THE ANIMAL” STEELE (w/ Capt. Lou Albano) beats BARRY HOROWITZ. Horowitz doesn’t seem to know quite what to make of the Animal, and his unorthodox style. Steele gets the win in about 90 seconds, by applying his flying hammerlock submission hold.
On commentary, Jesse says Steele is mentally unstable, and belongs in a padded room, not a wrestling ring. Vince laughs, and says that George may be a unique individual, but the WWF fans sure do love him!
MEAN GENE OKERLUND is standing in front of a WWF banner. He hypes upcoming events, with fans seeing localized promos for their particular market.
GENE then talks about a big show coming up on July 8. The WWF will be in Foxborough, Massachussetts for a big outdoor show at Sullivan stadium, the home of the NFL’s New England Patriots!
This show, which the WWF is calling the King of the Ring, will feature 16 of the top superstars in the WWF, squaring off in a tournament to determine the true king of the ring! The participants for the tournament will be announced in the coming weeks, but Gene says that he can confirm that Superfly Jimmy Snuka, the Junkyard Dog and WWF IC champion Don Muraco will be involved!
Plus, a HUGE main event has been signed for the show as well, a WWF title match between Hulk Hogan and Roddy Piper . . . inside a 15 foot high STEEL CAGE!
KING KONG BUNDY (w/ Classy Freddie Blassie) beats CHARLIE COOK. As Bundy and Blassie climb into the ring, Bundy holds up a poster of Andre the Giant, then tears it up, and tosses the pieces into the crowd. Cook attacks Bundy to start, but Bundy just swats him aside. From there, it’s all King Kong Bundy, as he pummels Cook, then squashes him in the corner with the Avalanche, before hitting a splash for the 1, 2, 3.
VINCE, GORILLA and JESSE send us to “ROWDY” RODDY PIPER, for another edition of PIPER’S PIT.
RODDY PIPER takes a moment to badmouth WWF champion Hulk Hogan, saying Hogan’s afraid of him, that’s why he hasn’t shown his face on television in several weeks. He says that he just heard that Jack Tunney signed a steel cage match between him and Hogan for the show on July 8 at Sullivan stadium, and says that suits him just fine, because then, Hogan won’t be able to run and hide!
PIPER then brings out his guests, WWF IC champ DON MURACO and MR. FUJI.
PIPER shakes hands with both men, and welcomes them back to the Pit.
MURACO says that he doesn’t want to waste time, he knows what the fans want, they want to see his and Fuji’s masterpiece, “Fuji Vice”!
When the video ends, Piper stands up out of his chair, and applauds, saying that Muraco and Fuji deserve Oscars for that!
MURACO brags about what great actors he and Fuji are!
PIPER agrees, and then says that he can’t wait to watch Muraco beat up the Junkyard Dog later on the show.
MURACO says that JYD doesn’t stand a chance against him, and he’ll prove it when he drops JYD on his head, and pins him for the 1, 2, 3!
“SUPERFLY” JIMMY SNUKA beats THE NIGHTMARE. The Superfly gets the win here, hitting the masked man with the Superfly Splash off the top rope for the pinfall.
An ad airs, hyping the upcoming WWF cartoon, which will air Saturday mornings on CBS . . .
NON-TITLE MATCH:
THE JUNKYARD DOG beats DON MURACO (w/ Mr. Fuji). Muraco gains an early advantage, after JYD becomes distracted by Mr. Fuji, but JYD eventually turns the tables and pummels Muraco. With Muraco down on the mat, JYD gets on all fours, and charges at Muraco, headbutting him, then repeating the move a second time. JYD goes for the cover, but Muraco is close enough to drape a leg over the bottom rope, breaking the count.
JYD continues on the offensive for the next minute or two, until Muraco stops him dead in his tracks with a thumb to the eye. A moment later, the referee is knocked down after a mid-ring collision.
Muraco takes advantage, and grabs JYD from behind, hooking his arms, and Mr. Fuji climbs up on the apron. Fuji takes a handful of salt and tosses it . . . but JYD moves at the last second, and Muraco gets a faceful of salt instead!
As the referee slowly gets back to his feet, JYD whips the blinded Muraco into the ropes, and catches him with a powerslam! JYD makes the cover, and gets the 1, 2, 3!
JYD has won this non-title match! Muraco and Fuji are livid, they yell at the referee, saying JYD threw the salt in Muraco’s face, but the referee pays no attention, and raises JYD’s arm before leaving the ring.
VENTURA rants on commentary, that Muraco was screwed by a biased official, there’s no way JYD should have won that match!
VINCE says that, as a result of the win, he’s sure JYD will be granted a rematch, with the title on the line!
VINCE, JESSE and GORILLA then wrap things up, and Vince hypes next week’s show, which will feature Roddy Piper vs Jimmy Snuka in the main event!
