THE WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION PRESENTS
SATURDAY, MAY 31, 1985
TAPED MAY 20 AT THE UTICA MEMORIAL AUDITORIUM IN UTICA, NY
GORILLA MONSOON, JESSE “THE BODY” VENTURA and VINCE MCMAHON are ringside to open the show, and they welcome us to another episode of WWF SUPERSTARS OF WRESTLING!
This week, we’ll see the likes of WWF Tag Team champions the Can-Am Express, the Fabulous Rougeau brothers, Jimmy Snuka and WWF IC champion Don Muraco in action!
Plus, Jimmy Snuka will be back on Piper’s Pit. After Piper repeatedly interrupted and insulted Snuka the last time he appeared on the Pit, the Superfly has demanded that Piper give him a chance to talk.
And, if you thought last week’s main event was a big one, this week’s will have to be seen to be believed! Andre the Giant, the biggest athlete in the world at 7’4” and well over 500 lbs, teams up with the 6’10”, 450 lbs hillbilly Uncle Elmer, as they meet the monster duo of King Kong Bundy and Big John Studd!
JESSE wonders if the ring, even if it is reinforced, will be able to hold all that weight?
VINCE says that we’ll find out soon enough!
Prior to the start of the bout, CAPT. LOU ALBANO leads the reigning WWF Tag Team champs to the ring! Albano climbs into the ring, and says that everyone knows that tag team wrestling is the Captain’s forte, and that’s why the Can-Am Express approached him and asked him to manage them! He says that these two make up one of the most talented teams he’s ever seen, and with his guidance, they’ll hold the Tag Team titles for a long, long time!
NON-TITLE MATCH:
THE CAN-AM EXPRESS (Tom Zenk & Phil Lafleur) (w/ Capt. Lou Albano) defeat THE CONQUISTADORES. The masked Conquistadores take advantage of the fact that it’s impossible to tell them apart, and several times throughout the match, they switch places without a legal tag. The champs overcome this, though, and in the end, Zenk leaps off the top turnbuckle and catches one of the masked men with a crossbody for the 1, 2, 3.
VINCE sends us to MEAN GENE OKERLUND for the WWF UPDATE.
OKERLUND is in the control room of a TV studio, and says that this week’s WWF Update will focus on THE DREAM TEAM: BRUTUS BEEFCAKE and DINO BRAVO.
Footage is shown of Bravo and Beefcake in singles matches, and then we see clips of them winning several prelim matches as a team.
OKERLUND talks about Dino Bravo and the success he had in his adopted hometown of Montreal, and says that he’s always been one of the most popular wrestlers on any show he’s been a part of, and Gene was shocked to see him turn on all his fans and join up with Brutus and Johnny V!
Closing footage is shown, of the interview where Bravo announced that pandering to the fans had got him nowhere, and he was signing with Johnny V.
An ad airs, hyping the WWF action figures, available wherever toys are sold.
NON-TITLE MATCH:
DON MURACO (w/ Mr. Fuji) beats CHARLIE COOK. Muraco gains the upper hand to start, but becomes distracted by a group of ringside fans, taunting him with chants of “beach bum”. While Muraco argues with the fans, Cook, a wily veteran of the sport, schoolboys Muraco for a VERY close nearfall. Muraco gets up, jabs a thumb in Cook’s eye, and then puts the boots to Cook. Muraco is relentless as he pummels Cook, eventually hitting the reverse Piledriver for the 3-count.
Muraco continues to pummel Cook after the bell, even hitting him in the head with the IC title belt, before dropping Cook with a second reverse Piledriver. Muraco then storms off with Mr. Fuji.
MEAN GENE OKERLUND is in the WWF control room. He talks about the recent matches between WWF champion Hulk Hogan and “Rowdy” Roddy Piper at Madison Square Garden. Footage is shown of their most recent match, back on May 19, where Hogan won by disqualification after Don Muraco interfered.
RODDY PIPER then walks into the shot. Mean Gene says that a match has been signed for the June 23 MSG show, with Piper and Muraco teaming up to face Hogan and a partner of his choice.
PIPER wants to know where Hogan is, he hasn’t seen him around lately. Piper thinks that Hogan can’t find anyone to team with him, and instead of coming out on TV and admitting that, Hogan’s run off, with his tail between his legs, and gone into hiding.
MEAN GENE says that Hogan’s been spending a lot of time in LA recently, filming another episode of the hit TV series, “The A-Team”.
PIPER laughs, and says that he knows Hogan and Gene are buddies, but Gene doesn’t have to stand here and lie to these people, he doesn’t have to cover for Hogan. Piper then mocks Gene, and says that maybe Gene can be Hogan’s tag team partner for the match on June 23!
The segment ends with Gene talking about some of the other matches that will take place on June 23 at MSG, while Piper continues to make fun of him.
THE JUNKYARD DOG beats BARRY HOROWITZ. JYD makes short work of his opponent, putting Horowitz away with the powerslam. Afterwards, JYD brings some young fans from the audience into the ring, and they dance to his theme music.
VINCE, JESSE and GORILLA talk about an incident that took place on last week’s show, where Gorilla had a confrontation with “Big Nasty” Angelo Mosca.
Footage is shown of the incident, where Mosca got in Gorilla’s face, and Monsoon called Mosca a bully before Blassie separated them and led Mosca to the dressing room.
MONSOON says that he’s never backed down from anyone, and he’s not about a start now! He says that, yes, he’s retired from active competition, but that won’t stop him from shutting Mosca’s mouth once and for all!
THE FABULOUS ROUGEAU BROTHERS (Armand & Raymond) defeat STEVE O & ANDRE LAGO. The Rougeau brothers come out to their “All-American Boys” theme song, waving miniature American flags. The Rougeaus may be obnoxious, but there’s no denying their talent inside the ring. They make short work of Steve O and Andre Lago, with Raymond locking Lago in a Boston Crab for the submission victory.
An ad airs, hyping the upcoming WWF cartoon, which will air Saturday mornings on CBS . . .
VINCE, GORILLA and JESSE send us to “ROWDY” RODDY PIPER, for another edition of PIPER’S PIT.
RODDY PIPER takes a moment to badmouth several of the WWF babyfaces, particularly Hulk Hogan, saying that he guarantees that he will be WWF champion by the end of the summer!
PIPER then talks about this week’s guest. He says that this man was on the show a couple of weeks ago, and apparently he’s a glutton for punishment, because he asked to come back!
PIPER then brings out “SUPERFLY” JIMMY SNUKA!
PIPER asks Snuka why he wanted to come back on Piper’s Pit. Snuka starts to answer, but Piper pulls the mic away, just like he did the last time Snuka was on the Pit.
This time, though, Snuka pulls the mic right out of Piper’s hand, and says that this time, Piper’s going to let him talk!
PIPER grabs the mic back, and says that this is his show, nobody bosses him around on his show!
SNUKA tries to grab the mic again, but Piper pulls it back, and tells Snuka that if he can’t act like a civilized person, then take a hike!
SNUKA glares at Piper, then turns to walk away . . .
PIPER BLINDSIDES SNUKA, DROPPING HIM TO THE FLOOR WITH A CLOTHESLINE!
PIPER then pulls off his leather belt, and starts whipping Snuka with it! Snuka starts to climb back to his feet, despite being repeatedly whipped with the belt. Piper then wraps the belt around Snuka’s neck and chokes him out with it!
With Snuka down and out, Piper whips him with the belt a few more times, then spits on Snuka, and storms off, leaving the Superfly lying on the arena floor.
VINCE, JESSE and GORILLA recap last week’s main event, where Andre the Giant beat Big John Studd by disqualification after King Kong Bundy interfered. Jesse said that Andre had been cheating throughout the match, and Bundy just came out to help his friend, and stop Andre from cheating.
BIG JOHN STUDD & KING KONG BUNDY (w/ Classy Freddie Blassie) defeat ANDRE THE GIANT & UNCLE ELMER (w/ Hillbilly Jim). All four men brawl in the ring to start, with Andre and Elmer getting the upper hand, but while the referee is trying to get Andre out of the ring, Studd and Bundy take the opportunity to double-team Elmer, giving them the advantage. For the next few minutes, they keep Elmer in their corner, double-teaming him every chance they get.
Late in the match, all four men are in the ring again, with Andre and Studd eventually taking their fight to the outside. Elmer has Bundy in the corner, pummeling him.
At that point, ANGELO MOSCA arrives at ringside, and jumps Hillbilly Jim from behind. This gets Uncle Elmer’s attention, and he forgets about Bundy, instead focusing on Mosca.
That gives Bundy the opportunity to turn the tables, and he delivers a headbutt to the back of Elmer’s head, then whips the giant hillbilly into the corner, and delivers the Avalanche! From there, Bundy splashes Elmer, and covers him for the 1, 2, 3!
After the bell, as Andre and Studd continue to brawl outside the ring, Bundy, Mosca and Freddie Blassie stomp away at Uncle Elmer.
Bundy and Mosca then leave the ring and attack Andre. Studd, Bundy and Mosca triple-team Andre, and throw him back into the ring.
At the broadcast table, GORILLA MONSOON decides that he’s seen enough of this, and charges ringside, brawling with Angelo Mosca! Mosca and Monsoon brawl down the aisle and to the back.
Meanwhile, with Uncle Elmer down and out in the ring, and Hillbilly Jim on the floor outside the ring, Studd and Bundy continue to work over Andre the Giant. Bundy whips Andre into the corner, and delivers the Avalanche.
Then, as Studd holds Andre’s leg, Bundy delivers a splash off the ropes, onto Andre’s leg! The Giant howls in pain as Bundy delivers a second splash!!!
While that’s going on, Uncle Elmer has rolled out of the ring, to the floor, and he and Hillbilly Jim are starting to shake off the cobwebs. When they realize what’s going on inside the ring, Jim and Elmer each grab a chair, and chase Bundy and Studd from the ring.
Jim and Elmer try to help Andre up, but it’s obvious that the Giant can’t put any weight on his leg.
VINCE and JESSE wrap things up, as several EMTs hit the ring to tend to the Giant, and the credits start to roll.
