THE WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION PRESENTS
SUPERSTARS OF WRESTLING
SATURDAY, MAY 24, 1985
TAPED MAY 20 AT THE UTICA MEMORIAL AUDITORIUM IN UTICA, NY
GORILLA MONSOON, JESSE “THE BODY” VENTURA and VINCE MCMAHONare ringside to open the show, and they welcome us to another episode of WWF SUPERSTARS OF WRESTLING!
This week, we’ll see the likes of the Junkyard Dog, George “the Animal” Steele, Uncle Elmer, Angelo Mosca and Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka in action!
Roddy Piper will have Mr. Fuji, WWF IC Champion Don Muraco and the Islanders as his guests on Piper’s Pit!
And a HUGE feature match, in every sense of the word, Andre the Giant faces Big John Studd, to see who truly is the giant of professional wrestling! Gorilla says that he hopes the ring has been reinforced for that one!
THE JUNKYARD DOG & GEORGE “THE ANIMAL” STEELE (w/ Capt. Lou Albano) defeat BARRY HOROWITZ & SWEDE HANSON. JYD and the Animal worked well together here, and JYD gets the win after hitting Horowitz with a powerslam for the 3-count.
VINCE sends us to MEAN GENE OKERLUND for the WWF UPDATE.
OKERLUND is in the control room of a TV studio, and says that this week’s WWF Update will focus on RAYMOND and ARMAND, the FABULOUS ROUGEAU BROTHERS.
Footage is shown of the Rougeau brothers in action, as well as an interview where the brothers waved mini American flags, and pronounced themselves as just a couple of “good ol’ All-American boys”.
OKERLUND says that the Rougeaus have quickly got under the skin of the WWF fans, but love them or hate them, there’s no denying that the Rougeau brothers are very talented, and have to be considered as top contenders to the World Tag Team titles.
THE DREAM TEAM (Brutus Beefcake & Dino Bravo) (w/ Johnny V) defeat CHARLIE COOK & ANDRE LAGO. Cook is a veteran of the sport, and he gives the Dream Team a tough time. At one point, Cook gets a series of very close nearfalls on Dino Bravo, but in the end, the Dream Team isolate Andre Lago, cutting him off from his partner, and they work him over. After dishing out plenty of punishment, Brutus gets the win, hitting Lago with his flying kneelift for the 3-count.
During the commentary, Jesse Ventura really puts the Dream Team over as the top tag team in the world, and says that they should be wearing the Tag Team titles, not those cowards the Can-Am Express. Vince says that the Dream Team will have an opportunity to win those belts when the championship committee feels that they’ve earned it.
An ad airs, hyping the WWF "Wrestling Superstars" action figures, available wherever toys are sold.
UNCLE ELMER (w/ Hillbilly Jim) beats THE NIGHTMARE. Elmer overpowers the Nightmare right from the opening bell, and puts the masked man away with a splash at the 2-minute mark.
Afterwards, Elmer and Jim have their own little hoedown in the ring, as their theme song plays. Vince and Gorilla get a kick out of it, while Jesse says that he’s going to be sick.
VINCE, GORILLA and JESSE talk about Don Muraco’s adventures in Hollywood over the past few weeks. Gorilla says that Muraco should stick to wrestling, but Ventura says he’s not surprised Gorilla doesn’t recognize Muraco’s obvious greatness, as Monsoon doesn’t have a talented bone in his body!
VINCE then sends us to “ROWDY” RODDY PIPER, for another edition of PIPER’S PIT.
RODDY PIPER takes a moment to talk about his recent MSG match with Hulk Hogan, saying that for two months in a row, Hogan hasn’t been able to beat him, but the crooked referee has made sure that Hogan retains the title. Piper says that sooner or later Hogan’s luck is going to run out.
PIPER then introduces his guests this week . . . WWF Intercontinental champ THE MAGNIFICENT MURACO, MR. FUJI and THE ISLANDERS!
PIPER notes that these aren’t the same Islanders that recently had the WWF Tag Team titles stolen from them by the Can-Am Express, and asks Fuji what gives?
FUJI says that these are new and improved Islanders, Haku and Tama! They are even more destructive, and will soon hold the World Tag Team titles!
MURACO then talks about his recent problems in Hollywood, saying that he and Fuji were kicked out of every studio they visited. He says that he always thought the bigwigs in Hollywood were idiots, after all, they did cast a chump like Hulk Hogan in some of their movies, but then they pass on a real talent like the Magnificent One?!?!
MURACO then says that he and Fuji have decided to cut out the middle man, and just make their own movies! He says that once they’ve finished, he wants to debut the first video right here on Piper’s Pit!
PIPER says he would be honoured to be the first to show it!
MURACO says that once they’ve finished, he’ll come back and then the entire world will witness the acting genius that is the Magnificent Muraco and Mr. Fuji!
ANGELO MOSCA (w/ Classy Freddie Blassie) beats STEVE O. Mosca is in a bad mood here, as he threatens the ring announcer and referee before the match, then jumps Steve O as soon as the bell rings. Mosca pummels his opponent, and locks him in a Canadian backbreaker for the submission.
Mosca decides he hasn’t inflicted enough punishment yet, and slams Steve O to the mat, hits a kneedrop, and then hoists the young man back up into the backbreaker!
The referee threatens to reverse the decision, so Mosca tosses O to the mat, and then shoves the referee to the mat as well, before leaving the ring with Freddie Blassie.
Before leaving ringside, though, Mosca and Blassie stop by the announce table. Blassie shakes Jesse Ventura’s hand, saying it’s a good thing Jesse is there, to keep Monsoon and McMahon in line.
Mosca gets in Monsoon’s face, saying that he remembers the last time they crossed paths, and Monsoon backed down, like a little girl! Gorilla says that Mosca’s nothing but a bully, and Angelo threatens to knock Gorilla’s teeth out if he says another negative thing about him!
Monsoon stands up, and the two stand nose to nose, but Blassie separates them, and leads Mosca away.
After Mosca and Blassie are gone, Monsoon says that he stands by what he said, Mosca is nothing but a bully, and there’s no place for people like that in this great sport.
JIMMY “SUPERFLY” SNUKA beats CONQUISTADORE #1. Conquistadore #1, who Vince claims is one-half of the Spanish Tag Team champions, with Conquistadore #2, gives the Superfly a tough match, but in the end, Snuka gets the upper hand, and hits the Superfly splash for the 3-count at 3:05.
An ad airs, hyping the upcoming WWF cartoon, Hulk Hogan's Rock n' Wrestling, which will air Saturday mornings on CBS . . .
ANDRE THE GIANT beats BIG JOHN STUDD (w/ Classy Freddie Blassie). These two behemoths tear into each other as soon as the bell sounds. Andre gets the upper hand early, but Freddie Blassie gets up on the apron to distract Andre, allowing Studd to attack the Giant from behind.
Studd’s advantage is short-lived, as Andre again turns the tables, and as Andre prepares to slam Studd, KING KONG BUNDY hits the ring!
Bundy clobbers Andre across the back, and then he and Studd double-team the Giant! The referee calls for the bell, awarding the match to Andre via disqualification, but Studd and Bundy don’t care, they continue to pummel the Giant.
HILLBILLY JIM and UNCLE ELMER then hit the ring, grab a couple of ringside chairs, and chase Studd, Bundy and Blassie from the ring.
Jim and Elmer then help Andre to his feet, and help him to the back.
VINCE, JESSE and GORILLA wrap things up, and hype next week’s show as the credits begin to roll.
