THE WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION PRESENTS
SUPERSTARS OF WRESTLING
SATURDAY, MAY 17, 1985
TAPED MAY 6 AT THE MEMORIAL AUDITORIUM IN BUFFALO, NY
GORILLA MONSOON, JESSE “THE BODY” VENTURA and VINCE MCMAHONare ringside to open the show, and they welcome us to another episode of WWF SUPERSTARS OF WRESTLING!
This week, we’ll see the likes of King Kong Bundy, Big John Studd, David Sammartino and the Fabulous Rougeau brothers in action!
Roddy Piper will have the Superfly, Jimmy Snuka, as his guest this week on Piper’s Pit!
And in the feature match, Brutus Beefcake meets George “the Animal” Steele!
KING KONG BUNDY & BIG JOHN STUDD (w/ Classy Freddie Blassie) defeat ANDRE LAGO & JERRY OATES. This is more of a massacre than a match, as Oates and Lago offer up very little offence, and find themselves on the receiving end of an enormous amount of punishment! Studd and Bundy don’t seem interested in winning the match, they just want to hurt their opponents. Finally, the match comes to end when Bundy squashes Lago with the Avalanche in the corner, then hits a splash for the pinfall.
After the match, Big John Studd grabs the house mic from ring announcer Howard Finkel, and says that right now, Andre the Giant is hiding out in Japan, because he’s scared to death of Big John Studd! Studd demands that Andre return to the US and face him in the ring, right here next week on television!
VINCE, GORILLA and JESSE talk about last week’s episode, where we saw footage of Don Muraco and Mr. Fuji at the Paramount Pictures studio in Hollywood. Things didn’t go quite as the Magnificent One had expected, as they were removed from the premises by security!
VINCE says that this week, Fuji and Muraco are trying their luck at MGM studio in Culver City, so let’s see how that works out for them.
DON MURACO and MR. FUJI are standing in front of the main gate at the MGM studio in Culver City.
MURACO says that he’s sure the bigwigs at MGM are smart enough to see his obvious greatness, and they’ll cast him in their next big blockbuster!
We cut to Muraco and Fuji inside the MGM studios, and it seems Muraco must’ve been more persuasive with the people at MGM, because they agreed to do a screen test with him.
Muraco is given a script, which he reads for a camera, though is “acting” is horrendous. The people in the room laugh hysterically, telling Muraco to stop reading, with Fuji and Muraco tossing a chair across the room, then storming out.
We cut to Muraco and Fuji back outside the studio. Muraco is livid, and says that so far all of the people they’ve dealt with are morons who wouldn’t know real acting talent if it bit them in the ass!
VINCE, GORILLA and JESSE discuss what we just saw. Vince and Gorilla have a good laugh at Muraco’s expense, but Jesse says that Muraco was great, and says that McMahon and Monsoon just don’t recognize talent.
DAVID SAMMARTINO (w/ Bruno Sammartino) beats ALI BEY THE TURK. Sammartino is impressive here, as he wears the Turk down, eventually putting him away with a powerslam at the 3-minute mark.
During the match, Vince puts David over as one of the top young superstars in the sport today. Jesse thinks he’s only where he is because of who his father is, but Gorilla says that’s preposterous.
VINCE sends us to MEAN GENE OKERLUND for the WWF UPDATE.
OKERLUND is in the control room of a TV studio, and says that this week’s WWF Update will focus on THE JUNKYARD DOG.
Footage is shown of JYD in action, as well as his ring entrance to Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust”. We also see footage of JYD bringing a young fan into the ring to dance along with him to his theme song.
OKERLUND says that the Junkyard Dog wrestled in the Mid-South area before arriving in the WWF, and says that he was one of the most popular wrestlers that area had ever seen. He’s sure that the JYD will be just as popular here in the WWF.
THE FABULOUS ROUGEAU BROTHERS (Armand & Raymond) defeat RUFUS R JONES & CHARLIE COOK. The Rougeau brothers come to the ring to their “All-American Boys” theme song (the one they used IRL) and waving miniature American flags. The veterans, Jones and Cook, give the Rougeau’s a tough match, but in the end, the Rougeau brothers win their debut when Raymond locks Cook in a Boston crab for the submission.
The Rougeaus cut a post-match promo, with Raymond talking about how they’re just a couple of good ol’ American boys, with Armand then talking in French, saying that they’re going to be the next World Tag Team champions!
THE KILLER BEES (B. Brian Blair & Jim Brunzell) defeat BARRY HOROWITZ & JAAVA RUUK. Blair and Brunzell, known as the Killer Bees, get a far more positive response from the crowd as they enter the ring than the Rougeaus did. Blair and Brunzell work well together, using quick tags to keep the fresh man in the ring, and keeping their opponents isolated in their half of the ring. In the end, Blair tags Brunzell in, then whips Horowitz into the ropes, with Brunzell climbing into the ring and hitting Horowitz with a picture-perfect standing dropkick. That puts Horowitz on the mat, and Brunzell covers him for the 1, 2, 3 at 2:51.
During the match, Vince and Gorilla hype the Bees as one of the most talented, and athletic, teams in wrestling today. Even Jesse can’t help but admit that they’re a talented duo, but says they look ridiculous in the black-and-yellow striped trunks!
MEAN GENE OKERLUND is standing in front of the WWF logo, and he hypes the upcoming WWF events, particularly the big event coming up this Monday night, May 19, at Madison Square Garden in NYC. On that card, fans will see such stars as the WWF Tag Team champions the Can-Am Express, Angelo “King Kong” Mosca and the Junkyard Dog. Plus, two big main event matches have been signed! The first will see Bruno Sammartino and his son David face off against Brutus Beefcake and Johnny V, and a rematch from last month’s MSG show, Hulk Hogan once again defends the WWF title against #1 contender “Rowdy” Roddy Piper!
We see pre-taped promos from WWF champion Hulk Hogan and Roddy Piper regarding their title match, with Piper promising to not only beat Hogan for the title, but run him out of the WWF for good!
VINCE sends us to “ROWDY” RODDY PIPER, for another edition of PIPER’S PIT.
RODDY PIPER takes a moment to bad-mouth Hulk Hogan, before introducing his guest this week, a savage from Fiji, SUPERFLY JIMMY SNUKA!
SNUKA comes out and tells Piper to watch what he says about him, and about Hulk Hogan, who is a good friend of his!
PIPER ignores him, and says that he’s going to try to ask his questions nice and slow for Snuka, since he doubts the Superfly has much of a grasp of the English language, and on top of that, Snuka’s not very bright.
RODDY, very slowly, asks Snuka why he’s back in the WWF, but before Snuka can answer, Piper pulls the mic away, and starts talking about one of his favourite matches, from a few years ago, where Snuka got beat by the greatest IC champ of all-time, Don Muraco!
SNUKA tries to respond, but again, only gets a couple of words in before Piper pulls the mic away from him.
This time, Snuka gets right in Piper’s face, and tells him to let him talk, but Piper again pulls the mic away from him.
SNUKA storms off the set, as Piper continues to make fun of the Superfly.
BRUTUS BEEFCAKE (w/ Johnny V) beats GEORGE “THE ANIMAL” STEELE (w/ Capt. Lou Albano). Steele dominates most of the match, but when Johnny V tries to interfere, Lou Albano grabs him and the two start brawling on the floor! This gets the attention of the Animal, and Brutus capitalizes, hitting a low blow from behind that drops Steele to the mat. As the Animal gets back to his feet, Brutus hits the flying kneelift for the 1, 2, 3!
Afterwards, Johnny V climbs into the ring to celebrate with Beefcake, but George Steele clobbers Brutus, and then chases both Brutus and Valiant from the ring.
Once the heels are gone, Steele proceeds to tear open a turnbuckle pad for a post-match snack!
VINCE, JESSE and GORILLA wrap things up, and hype next week’s show as the credits begin to roll.
