THE WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION PRESENTS
SUPERSTARS OF WRESTLING
SATURDAY, MAY 10, 1985
TAPED MAY 6 AT THE MEMORIAL AUDITORIUM IN BUFFALO, NY
GORILLA MONSOON, JESSE “THE BODY” VENTURA and VINCE MCMAHON are ringside to open the show, and they welcome us to the very FIRST episode of WWF SUPERSTARS OF WRESTLING!
VINCE lists the wrestlers that we’ll see in action on today’s show, including the reigning WWF Tag Team champions the Can-Am Express, King Kong Bundy, and Johnny V’s duo of Dino Bravo and Brutus Beefcake!
Plus, we’ll see a newcomer to the WWF, the Junkyard Dog, and he’ll team up with two returning faces, Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka and George “the Animal” Steele, for 6-man tag team action!
Roddy Piper will have Classy Freddie Blassie as his guest on Piper’s Pit!
And, a HUGE main event, as Hulk Hogan faces Angelo “King Kong” Mosca in a non-title match!
NON-TITLE MATCH:
THE CAN-AM EXPRESS (Tom Zenk & Phil Lafleur) defeat BARRY HOROWITZ & JERRY OATES. The tag champs are on their game here, as they quickly wear down their opponents. Lafleur gets the win for the Can-Am Express, delivering his Canadian Rockies Buster (a rolling fireman’s carry slam) on Horowitz for the pinfall at 3:03.
After the match, Vince talks about the Can-Am Express, and says that there are teams lining up to challenge them, including a team that is on their way to the WWF . . . Raymond and Armand, the Fabulous Rougeau Brothers! The Rougeaus are standing by with pre-recorded comments.
ARMAND and RAYMOND ROUGEAU stand in front of a WWF backdrop. Raymond, in a heavy french accent, says that he knows the fans will get behind them, because he and Armand are just a couple of good ol’ American boys! Raymond then waves a miniature American flag while Armand talks about the Can-Am Express, saying that he used to team with Lafleur, and brags about how he carried Lafleur.
VINCE says that the Rougeau Brothers are on their way to the WWF, and Jesse says that they’re his kind of team.
THE DREAM TEAM (Dino Bravo & Brutus Beefcake) (w/ Johnny V) defeat RUFUS R JONES & CHARLIE COOK. The veterans, Jones and Cook, give the Dream Team a tough time, but in the end, Bravo and Beefcake get the win when Bravo pins Cook after an Airplane spin.
VINCE sends us to “ROWDY” RODDY PIPER, for another edition of PIPER’S PIT.
RODDY PIPER is all alone on the set this week. He says that he’s sure everyone is wondering where Hercules is, and says that Hulk Hogan jumped Herc in a parking lot, from behind, of course, because Hogan is a yellow-bellied coward. Piper says that Hogan then stole a car, and ran Herc over. He says that Herc is laid up, in a full body cast, in a hospital bed.
PIPER says that should tell all these fans just what kind of man Hulk Hogan is, but the fans still cheer for him. Piper says that the fans idolize Hogan because they’re pieces of trash, just like Hogan!
The Buffalo crowd lets Piper know what they think about that, but Hot Rod doesn’t seem to mind, he just smiles and says that he’s just telling it like it is!
PIPER then introduces his guest this week, the returning CLASSY FREDDIE BLASSIE!
The two men shake hands. Blassie says that Piper’s right about these fans, and hopes that Hot Rod will continue to tell it like it is.
BLASSIE then says that Floyd Creatchman, a very close personal friend of his, contacted him and offered to sell Blassie the contracts for his stable of wrestlers. Apparently Creatchman has a situation to deal with, involving one of his other clients in another sport, and that’s going to take all his time for the foreseeable future.
BLASSIE says that he jumped at the opportunity, and he’s now the manager for King Kong Bundy, Big John Studd and Angelo Mosca! Blassie puts the three men over as the most dominant, fearsome wrestlers in the WWF, and says that he will lead them straight to the top of the World Wrestling Federation!
KING KONG BUNDY (w/ Classy Freddie Blassie) beats JOEY WAR EAGLE. War Eagle doesn’t stand a chance here. Bundy overpowers War Eagle right from the opening bell, and puts him away at 1:05 with the Avalanche in the corner, followed by a splash.
After the bout, Bundy and Blassie are joined in the ring by Big John Studd. Studd calls out Andre the Giant, saying he’s been waiting to get his hands on Andre ever since Studd arrived in the WWF! Studd says that he’s the true giant in the WWF, and he’ll prove it if Andre has the guts to face him in the ring!
VINCE, JESSE and GORILLA talk about the match we just saw. Vince mentions that Andre is currently wrestling in Japan, where he’s the most sought-after foreign star in the history of Japanese wrestling, but Vince is sure that once Andre’s back in the US, he’ll be more than happy to answer Big John Studd’s challenge.
VINCE then sends us to MEAN GENE OKERLUND for the WWF UPDATE.
OKERLUND is in the control room of a TV studio, and says that this week’s WWF Update will focus on ANGELO “KING KONG” MOSCA.
Footage is shown of Mosca in action when he first arrived in the WWF, and we see a confrontation with Gorilla Monsoon during an interview segment.
OKERLUND says that there’s a reason why Mosca has the nickname King Kong . . . he’s a monster, and not only inside the ring! Gene talks about Mosca being one of the most feared men to ever play in the Canadian Football League, especially after he broke BC Lions player Willie Fleming’s leg with a cheap hit in the 1963 Grey Cup game.
VINCE, JESSE and GORILLA talk about the Update segment, with Vince saying that Mean Gene is right, Mosca is indeed a monster, and he’s sure that will be apparent when Mosca locks up with Hulk Hogan in today’s main event! Jesse thinks that Mosca is just misunderstood.
GORILLA talks about the incident a while back, where Mosca put his hands on him during an interview segment, and says that he let it slide, but Mosca had better keep his hands off him in the future.
THE JUNKYARD DOG & JIMMY “SUPERFLY” SNUKA & GEORGE “THE ANIMAL” STEELE (w/ Capt. Lou Albano) beat SHEIK ABDULLAH & ALI BEY THE TURK & JAAVA RUUK. The heels come to the ring waving the flags of their respective countries, with Ruuk waving the Saudi Arabian flag, Ali waving the flag of Turkey and Sheik Abdullah waving the Iranian flag. Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust” brings the Junkyard Dog, Jimmy Snuka and George Steele, along with Capt. Lou Albano, to the ring!
The heels trio use every dirty trick in the book to try and gain the upper hand in this match, but in the end, the Junkyard Dog gets the pinfall for his team with a powerslam on Ruuk at 4:17.
MEAN GENE OKERLUND is standing in front of the WWF logo, and he hypes upcoming WWF events, particularly the big event coming up on Monday night, May 19 at Madison Square Garden. On that card, fans will see such stars as the WWF Tag Team champions the Can-Am Express, Angelo “King Kong” Mosca, and the Junkyard Dog. Fans will also see the debut of the Hart Foundation, Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart. Plus, two big main event matches have been signed! The first will see Bruno Sammartino and his son David face off against Brutus Beefcake and Johnny V, and a rematch from last month’s MSG show, Hulk Hogan once again defends the WWF title against #1 contender “Rowdy” Roddy Piper!
NON-TITLE MATCH:
HULK HOGAN beats ANGELO MOSCA (w/ Classy Freddie Blassie). After a hard-hitting, back and forth match, Hogan gets the win by disqualification after King Kong Bundy and Big John Studd hit the ring and attack the Hulkster. They give him a beating, until the babyface locker room empties, and the wrestlers hit the ring to chase Blassie and his men from the ring.
VINCE, JESSE and GORILLA talk about what we just saw, with Jesse laughing, and saying that watching Mosca, Bundy and Studd pound Hogan into the mat was the single greatest thing he’s ever seen!
VINCE then sends us to pre-recorded comments from WWF IC champion Don Muraco and Mr. Fuji!
DON MURACO and MR. FUJI are standing in front of the main gate at Paramount Pictures.
MURACO says that he’s already the world’s greatest wrestler, now he wants to conquer Hollywood. He says that if these Hollywood bigwigs will cast a no-talent chump like Hulk Hogan in their movies, then he’ll have no trouble getting starring roles! Fuji nods in agreement.
The video then cuts to Muraco and Fuji inside the Paramount studio, demanding to talk with Paramount CEO Frank Mancuso, but are repeatedly told that Mr. Mancuso is out of town on business, and even if he was at the studio, they’d need an appointment to talk to him.
Muraco continues to make a scene, and he and Fuji are eventually removed from the building by security.
Outside again, Muraco badmouths Paramount, and says he wouldn’t want to be involved with them anyways, and he and Fuji storm off as the video ends.
VINCE, JESSE and GORILLA wrap things up, and hype next week’s show as the credits begin to roll.
