Wild West Wrestling – Heavyweight Title Tournament
Saturday, April 5th, 1985
Thomas & Mack Center, Las Vegas, NV
*non-televised house show
OPENING ROUND:
1) Davey Boy Smith pinned 'Wildman' Jack Armstrong at 11:13 following a running power slam to advance in the tournament. Armstrong put up a good effort and was able to rough Davey up a little bit but in the end he simply had no answer for Smith's power as he fell victim to both the delayed standing vertical suplex and the big running power slam.
2) Harley Race pinned George Wells at 8:47 with a fisherman's suplex and a roll of the shoulder to advance in the tournament. Wells put up a good fight and got a near fall with a big drop kick in the early going, but big George got a little to excited and went for his big flying shoulder tackle too soon only to have Race move out of the way and then quickly follow up with the pinning combination to get the fall.
3) Bret Hart pinned 'Cowboy' Scott Casey at 15:01 with a bridging German suplex to advance in the tournament. This was an evenly contested match up that started out scientific but eventually got rougher in style with both men exchanging punches. Hart proved about mid way through that he wasn't beyond 'bending the rules' to gain an advantage. Casey made a come back and went for the running bulldog, only to have Bret shove Casey off hard into the corner and then catch him with the German suplex for the victory
4) Jacques Rougeau pinned Jos LeDuc at 15:10 following a missile drop kick from the second rope to advance in the tournament. After an early burst of offense by Rougeau, Leduc completely dominated this contest, but just simply couldn't put former rival away. Rougeau somehow managed to get his foot on the ropes after a big over-the-knee backbreaker by LeDuc that surely would have ended the match and 'the Canadian Freight Train' just lost it. From there he bloodied and maimed Jacques to the point that Harley Race, who has had recent problems with LeDuc, came out to put an end to it. Though Race never entered the ring, he did provide enough of a distraction to allow Rougeau to mount the second rope and make a desperation leap at LeDuc with the missile drop kick, which connected and allowed Jacques to stack LeDuc for the pin. It is unclear if Race really cared about Jacques condition or if he was simply trying to avoid the possibility of having to match up with LeDuc in the next round of the tournament.
INTERMISSION
SEMI-FINALS:
4) Bret Hart pinned Davey Boy Smith at 20:17 when he countered Smith's sunset flip attempt from the apron by using the ropes to counteract Davey Boy's momentum, stack his opponent and grab one of Smith's legs with his free arm to secure the fall. Hart held onto the top rope with one arm during the fall to prevent Smith from kicking out but the referee didn't see it. Both men used science, speed, rough-housing and down right brawling in an attempt to advance in the tournament. It was disappointing to see such a hard-fought match end with Hart taking the short cut that he did, but Bret didn't seem to mind much at all because he was moving on to the tournament finals.
5) Jacques Rougeau defeated Harley Race by disqualification at 13:19 when Jos LeDuc ran in and attacked both Rougeau and Race with his 'ax handle'. Since LeDuc attacked Rougeau first he was awarded the victory and allowed to continue on to the tournament finals. Both men had been going at it in a relatively cleanly contested match before LeDuc had got involved. Rougeau wasn't in the best of shape going into this match. After this, I don't see any way that he can continue. Race had to be helped from the ring as well and security removed LeDuc from the building after the incident.
6) In a non-tournament match, Magnum Force: Dave Peterson & Scott Hall defeated The Interns #1 & #2 (w/Tux Newman) at 20:01 when Peterson pinned #1? following a 'rocket launcher' after both Interns collided in the ring and Hall ran over and decked Newman, who had climbed up on the ring apron.
FINALS:
7) Jacques Rougeau pinned Bret Hart at 9:59 to become the first Wild West Wrestling Heavyweight Champion. Hart had come out to the ring and demanded he be given the title on a 'forfeit' because Rougeau was in no shape to compete and the referee had began to count Jacques out when Rougeau made his way from the back with his head bloody and heavily bandaged.
As soon as Jacques slid into the ring, Hart shoved the referee to the side and immediately went on the offensive as he stomped away at his weakened opponent. Hart got a couple of near falls with a snap suplex and a back breaker but, somehow, Rougeau managed to kick out both times. Now frustrated, Hart continued to lay the boots to Rougeau and work Jacques over in the corner. Hart went for a superplex, but Rougeau, again in a last ditch effort, was able to push Hart from the top rope and then attempt the missile drop kick from the second rope as Bret regained his feet. Hart side-stepped the flying Rougeau as he saw the move coming from a 'mile away' and then went in for the kill.
Bret mounted the second turnbuckle and then came off with a flying forearm smash on the downed Jacques, but he wasn't done there as he went back up on the ropes and did it again. From there, feeling he had things well in hand, Hart took a moment to showboat to the crowd before lifting Rougeau up by the hair and prepping him for the piledriver. Bret got Rougeau up, but Jacques began to kick his legs and it forced Bret to put him down. Jacques then arched his back with what was left of his strength and sent Bret flying over his shoulders. When Bret landed, Jacques had fallen on top of him and had Hart down in a 'jack knife' position. Jacques had both legs hooked and Hart was caught completely off guard as the referee's hand hit the mat for the third time, just before he could kick out.
Jacques Rougeau has done the unthinkable and gone through a star-studded field to become the first ever Wild West Heavyweight Champion! Following the loss, a furious Hart blindsided Jacques as he was celebrating with the belt and then delivered the pile driver on him. Bret then draped the belt across the unconscious Rougeau's chest before leaving.
