THE WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION PRESENTS
CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING
SATURDAY, MARCH 29, 1985
TAPED MARCH 4 AT THE MID-HUDSON CIVIC CENTER IN POUGHKEEPSIE, NY
VINCE MCMAHON and JESSE “THE BODY” VENTURA are ringside to open the show, and they welcome us to another edition of WWF CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING!
VINCE and JESSE run down the matches that will take place today, including the big 6-man tag team main event, as Intercontinental champ Tito Santana teams with the Can-Am Express, and they’ll face Mr. Fuji’s trio of Don Muraco and the WWF Tag Team champs the Islanders! Jesse says that Fuji’s team can kill two birds with one stone, and take out Santana and the Can-Ams before they even get to WrestleMania!
Plus, Rocky Johnson, King Kong Bundy and “Rowdy” Roddy Piper will be in singles matches. Pedro Morales and Ivan Putski, both former WWF Tag Team champions in the past, will team up for tag team action in our opening bout!
As well, WWF World Champion Ted Dibiase will be the guest this week on Piper’s Pit, and we’ll hear from Hulk Hogan and Mr. T regarding their matches coming up Monday night at WrestleMania, as well as Hogan hosting Saturday Night Live on NBC tonight!
As Putski and Morales make their way to the ring for the opening bout, Vince puts over Morales as one of the true greats in this sport, as he’s the only man in history to hold all three WWF championships! Jesse says he’s never liked Morales personally, but he can’t ignore what Morales has achieved in the world of professional wrestling.
IVAN PUTSKI & PEDRO MORALES defeat JOHNNY K-9 & TERRY SIMMS. Putski and Morales, two tough veterans, work well together here, as they work over K-9 and Simms. Morales gets the win, forcing Simms to submit to a Boston crab at 3:11.
VINCE notes that both Putski and Morales will be involved in the 20-man Battle Royal Monday night at WrestleMania, featuring top stars from the WWF and the NFL!
VINCE and JESSE then send us to GORILLA MONSOON and the WWF UPDATE, brought to us this week by Castrol, the motor oil engineered for today’s smaller engines.
MONSOON says that this week’s WWF Update focuses on a man that, while he may not like him personally, there’s no denying his abilities, and that man is former WWF Intercontinental champ, Don Muraco!
Footage is shown of Muraco surfing, then wrestling in the ring, taking apart an opponent. Muraco finishes off his hapless opponent with the reverse Piledriver. After the 3-count, Muraco decides he hasn’t had enough, and hits a second reverse Piledriver, just for the hell of it.
MONSOON says that Muraco has no qualms with breaking the rules. He’s extremely arrogant. But underneath all that is a very talented wrestler with a killer instinct, and that’s something that each and every one of Mr. Muraco’s opponents needs to keep in mind!
KING KONG BUNDY beats JOE MIRTO. Bundy needs less than a minute to put Mirto away, using the Avalanche to squash Mirto and pick up the 1, 2, 3. Bundy demands that referee Dick Kroll count to 5, which Kroll, probably fearing for his life, immediately does!
During the match, MR. FUJI, FLOYD CREATCHMAN and LUSCIOUS JOHNNY V all come out to the ring, to watch Bundy in action. All three men applaud Bundy after he gets his hand raised.
VINCE says that it’s time for PIPER’S PIT, but Roddy has decided to conduct this week’s segment at Ted Dibiase’s private training facility. Vince says that Piper claims he heard from a reliable source that Hulk Hogan and Mr. T were planning a sneak attack on Piper and Dibiase during the segment.
JESSE says that he’s heard the same thing, and he knows it’s true, because he knows Hogan and Mr. T are DESPERATE for any advantage they can get as we head into WrestleMania.
RODDY PIPER, with his bodyguard HERCULES lurking nearby, joins WWF World champion TED DIBIASE at Dibiase’s private training facility.
PIPER talks about WrestleMania, coming up this Monday night, and says that Dibiase will defend the WWF title against Hulk Hogan, while Piper will face Mr. T in a boxing match. The two men have some laughs while insulting their WrestleMania opponents, with Piper saying he’s going to knock Mr. T out in the first round.
DIBIASE says he doubts Mr. T will even show up for the match, after Piper’s display last week, and then talks about Hulk Hogan. Dibiase dismisses Hogan as a challenger, saying that Hogan may be a former World champion, but that’s in the past, and Dibiase is the future of the WWF and wrestling in general!
DIBIASE is so confident that he says he will LEAVE THE WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION FOREVER if he loses the belt to Hogan!
PIPER wraps up the segment, taking a few more shots at Mr. T and Hulk Hogan.
ROCKY “SOULMAN” JOHNSON beats LARRY DEE. Johnson has become one of the more popular wrestlers among WWF fans, with his high-flying style and sportsmanlike attitude. The fans give him a loud ovation as he makes his way to the ring for his match. Larry Dee gets a few shots in, but otherwise, it’s all Rocky Johnson here. Rocky hits Dee with three quick jabs, followed by a big right hand, which he calls the “Soulman shuffle”. Rocky then goes to the top rope and as Dee slowly gets to his feet, Rocky connects with a crossbody for the 1, 2, 3!
During their commentary, Vince and Jesse talk about Johnson’s match coming up at WrestleMania, against a masked man known as the Demon. Vince really puts Rocky over, talking about his reign as one-half of the World Tag Team champions with Tony Atlas last year, and he says that Rocky has to be considered a top challenger to every title in the WWF.
MEAN GENE OKERLUND is in the control center for this week’s WRESTLEMANIA REPORT.
GENE says that we’re only two days away from the biggest event in the history of wrestling . . . WrestleMania! The event will take place this Monday night, March 31, and will be available on closed circuit at venues throughout the Northeast:
He then runs down the full card for WrestleMania:
* WWF IC Champion TITO SANTANA defends the title against former Champion DON MURACO!
* ROCKY “SOULMAN” JOHNSON meets a masked man known only as THE DEMON!
* KING KONG BUNDY squares off with BUGSY MCGRAW!
* MANDO GUERRERO, of the world-famous Guerrero family, makes his WWF debut against “PLAYBOY” RIP ROGERS!
* BRUTUS BEEFCAKE will face DAVID SAMMARTINO, who will have his legendary father, Bruno Sammartino, in his corner!
* THE ISLANDERS will defend the WWF Tag Team titles against THE CAN-AM EXPRESS!
* Top athletes from the World Wrestling Federation and from the National Football League will take part in a big 20-MAN BATTLE ROYAL!
* LEILANI KAI defends the World Women’s title against former Champion WENDI RICHTER, who will have Cyndi Lauper in her corner!
* TV star MR. T will square off with “ROWDY” RODDY PIPER in a special BOXING MATCH!
* And the main event will see HULK HOGAN challenge WWF Champion TED DIBIASE for the title!
* Muhammed Ali, Liberace and New York Yankees manager Billy Martin will be involved in the main event!
We see short, pre-recorded promos from some of the wrestlers scheduled to take part in WrestleMania, including Hulk Hogan, WWF Champion Ted Dibiase, and Cyndi Lauper and Wendi Richter. We also hear from several of the wrestlers and NFL players that will take part in the 20-man Battle Royal.
VINCE and JESSE talk about the big 20-man Battle Royal that will take place at WrestleMania, featuring stars of the World Wrestling Federation AND some of the toughest men in the National Football League! Vince runs down some of the names that will be taking part in the match, including WWF superstars such as Big John Studd and Uncle Elmer, and NFL stars such as Jimbo Covert of the Chicago Bears, San Francisco’s Russ Francis, who’s fresh off a SuperBowl win, and New York Giants star Lawrence Taylor!
JESSE says that no one can deny how tough these pro football players are, but he doesn’t think they’ll stand a chance against the best the World Wrestling Federation has to offer.
“ROWDY” RODDY PIPER (w/ Hercules) beats NICK DECARLO. Piper comes to the ring, with a smirk on his face, and he jaws with several ringside fans before the bell rings. Arrogance just oozes off of Piper, as he toys with DeCarlo to start the match. Eventually DeCarlo fires off some stiff right hands that knock the smirk off Piper’s face, but Roddy responds with a thumb to the eye. From there, Piper wears DeCarlo down, and locks on the sleeper for the submission win.
Afterwards, Piper does some shadow boxing in the ring, then grabs the house mic from Howard Finkel and claims that not only is he the greatest wrestler in history, but at WrestleMania, he’ll prove that he’s the greatest boxer as well!
MEAN GENE OKERLUND is backstage in the interview area, and he’s joined by former boxing champion MUHAMMAD ALI, who will serve as the guest referee for the main event at WrestleMania.
ALI says that with a spectacle like WrestleMania, it’s no surprise that the Greatest would be involved! Ali says that he’s going to call the WWF title match right down the middle, and if either wrestler gets out of line, he’ll put them in their place!
GENE says that with Ali’s success in the boxing ring, he’s curious to see if he has any thoughts on the Mr. T and Roddy Piper boxing match that will take place at WrestleMania as well. Ali says that he could whip both of ‘em, but he’s looking forward to watching that match, and he predicts Mr. T will come out victorious!
GENE is then joined in the interview area by HULK HOGAN and MR. T. Gene says that the time for talking is almost over, WrestleMania is this Monday night.
HOGAN: “That’s right Mean Gene! All the training, all the prayers, all the vitamins, have all led to this Monday night, brother! Ted Dibiase, you’ve done a lot of talking, you’ve insulted me, brother, and you’ve insulted all the little Hulkamaniacs, but as Mean Gene said, the time for talking is almost over, and I’ve just got one last thing to say to you, Dibiase . . . whatcha gonna do when Hulkamania runs wild on YOU?!?!”
GENE asks Mr. T about his thoughts on his boxing match with Roddy Piper.
MR. T: “Mean Gene, I pity the fool! Roddy Piper, you’ve been runnin’ your mouth, and Monday night, I’m gonna shut it!”
VINCE and JESSE talk about this week’s main event, a 6-man tag team match, with Mr. Fuji’s trio of Don Muraco and the WWF Tag Team champs the Islanders on one side, and on the other, WWF IC champ Tito Santana and the Can-Am Express!
TITO SANTANA (WWF IC Champ) & THE CAN-AM EXPRESS VS. DON MURACO & THE ISLANDERS (WWF Tag Team Champs) (w/ Mr. Fuji). The fans have been waiting for this one, and these 6 men don’t disappoint! The action is fast and furious right from the opening bell, and doesn’t let up at all. Around the 7-minute mark, we end up with all 6 men brawling in the ring, and referee Joey Marella realizes that he’s lost all control of this one. He calls for the bell, throwing the match out and declaring it a No Contest!
That doesn’t matter to the wrestlers, as they continue to brawl in, and outside, the ring as the show comes to an end.
VINCE: “Fans, we’re out of time for this week! Don’t forget to tune into NBC tonight to see Hulk Hogan hosting Saturday Night Live, and we hope you’ll join us either at Madison Square Garden, or one of the many closed circuit locations around the Northeast this Monday night for WRESTLEMANIA!!!!”
