THE WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION PRESENTS
CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING
SATURDAY, MARCH 22, 1985
TAPED MARCH 4 AT THE MID-HUDSON CIVIC CENTER IN POUGHKEEPSIE, NY
VINCE MCMAHON and JESSE “THE BODY” VENTURA are ringside to open the show, and they welcome us to another edition of WWF CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING!
VINCE and JESSE run down the matches that we’ll see on today’s show, including the feature match of Big John Studd taking on Uncle Elmer! Jesse says that idiot hillbilly doesn’t stand a chance against Studd, and says Big John will send the country boy back to whatever backwoods hick town he crawled out of.
Plus, “Soulman” Rocky Johnson, Brutus Beefcake, David Sammartino, and WWF Intercontinental champ Tito Santana will all be in singles action, and WWF Tag Team champions the Islanders, with Mr. Fuji in their corner, will be in tag team action. And, Roddy Piper said last week that he will have Mr. T back on Piper’s Pit this week, to discuss their special boxing match coming up at WrestleMania!
ROCKY “SOULMAN” JOHNSON beats PAUL CHRISTY. Johnson, a favourite among the WWF fans, comes out to a loud ovation. Johnson makes short work of his opponent, using the Soulman shuffle, a series of jabs, followed by a big right hand, to put Christy on the mat for the 3-count at 3:31.
During the commentary, VINCE says that Rocky will be in action at WrestleMania, in a singles match against a masked man known as the Demon.
BRUTUS BEEFCAKE (w/ Johnny V) beats SD JONES. To start the match, Johnny V distracts Jones, and Brutus attacks Jones from behind. SD never recovers, and Brutus puts him away with the running kneelift at 2:38.
MEAN GENE OKERLUND is backstage in the interview area, and he’s joined by LIBERACE, who will serve as the guest timekeeper for the main event at WrestleMania.
LIBERACE says he’s so happy to be a part of an extravaganza like WrestleMania, and puts over the WWF as the leader in the world of sports entertainment.
GENE asks him who he thinks will win the main event, with Liberace saying that he thinks Hulk Hogan will leave Madison Square Garden as the new champion!
Back at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center, Vince and Jesse discuss Liberace serving as the guest timekeeper for the WWF World title bout at WrestleMania. Vince says that Liberace is one of the most flamboyant personalities he’s ever met, and says he’s suited perfectly for an event like WrestleMania, an event that will bring together the best of the worlds of sports and entertainment!
VINCE then mentions that, next week, Mean Gene will be talking with Muhammed Ali, former heavweight boxing champion of the world, as well as TV personality Joan Rivers, who will serve as the guest ring announcer for the boxing match between Roddy Piper and Mr. T!
JESSE reiterates what he said last week, that Ali had better call the World title match down the middle, or the Body might just take it upon himself to get in the ring and knock Ali out!
At that point, the roof nearly comes off the Mid-Hudson Civic Center, as the “Living Legend” BRUNO SAMMARTINO leads his son DAVID to the ring for the next match. Vince says that Bruno may be retired, but he’s just as popular as ever with the WWF fans! Jesse thinks that Bruno is nothing but a glory hog, even though he’s retired, he still comes out here, just to hear the people cheer.
DAVID SAMMARTINO (w/ Bruno Sammartino) beats JOHNNY K-9. K-9 goes to attack Sammartino when David’s back is turned, but David is ready, and he moves out of the way, then takes K-9 down with a hiptoss. From there, David simply overpowers his opponent, putting K-9 down for the 3-count with a powerslam at 1:20.
BRUTUS BEEFCAKE and JOHNNY V come down the aisle and watch the final moments of the match.
VINCE and JESSE talk about the Brutus Beefcake – David Sammartino match that will take place at WrestleMania, with Vince saying that he thinks David will emerge from his father’s shadow, and become a superstar in his own right, while Jesse thinks that David is just a punk, and should quit wrestling now, before he gets hurt.
MEAN GENE is backstage, in the interview area, with KING KONG BUNDY. Gene says that Bundy has caught the eye of several of the managers here in the WWF, who seem to be scouting him.
BUNDY says that’s fine, but he’s not concerned with that, his only purpose here in the World Wrestling Federation is to squash everyone he faces, and win championship gold!
GENE says that Bundy will face another newcomer to the WWF, Bugsy McGraw, at WrestleMania.
BUNDY says that he and McGraw have crossed paths before, in other territories, and it didn’t end up well for McGraw. He says that this time will be no different.
TITO SANTANA (WWF IC champion) beats TERRY SIMMS. This match is all Santana, as he wears Simms down, and hits the flying forearm smash off the ropes for the 3-count at 2:04.
During the commentary, Jesse says that an IC title match has been signed for WrestleMania, as Don Muraco gets a shot at the title. Jesse thinks that Santana’s reign as champion will come to an end on March 31!
MEAN GENE OKERLUND is in the control center for this week’s WRESTLEMANIA REPORT.
GENE says that we’re just over a week away from the biggest event in the history of wrestling . . . WrestleMania! The event will take place on Monday night, March 31, and will be available on closed circuit at venues throughout the Northeast:
He then runs down the full card for WrestleMania:
* WWF IC Champion TITO SANTANA defends the title against former Champion DON MURACO!
* ROCKY “SOULMAN” JOHNSON meets a masked man known only as THE DEMON!
* KING KONG BUNDY squares off with BUGSY MCGRAW!
* BRUTUS BEEFCAKE will face DAVID SAMMARTINO, who will have his legendary father, Bruno Sammartino, in his corner!
* THE ISLANDERS will defend the WWF Tag Team titles against THE CAN-AM EXPRESS!
* Top athletes from the World Wrestling Federation and from the National Football League will take part in a big 20-MAN BATTLE ROYAL!
* LEILANI KAI defends the World Women’s title against former Champion WENDI RICHTER, who will have Cyndi Lauper in her corner!
* TV star MR. T will square off with “ROWDY” RODDY PIPER in a special BOXING MATCH!
* And the main event will see HULK HOGAN challenge WWF Champion TED DIBIASE for the title!
* Muhammed Ali, Liberace and New York Yankees manager Billy Martin will be involved in the main event!
We see short, pre-recorded promos from some of the wrestlers scheduled to take part in WrestleMania, including Hulk Hogan, WWF Champion Ted Dibiase, and Cyndi Lauper and Wendi Richter. We also hear from several of the wrestlers and NFL players that will take part in the 20-man Battle Royal.
VINCE and JESSE talk about the big 20-man Battle Royal that will take place at WrestleMania, featuring stars of the World Wrestling Federation AND some of the toughest men in the National Football League! Vince runs down some of the names that will be taking part in the match, including WWF superstars such as Big John Studd and Uncle Elmer, and NFL stars such as Jimbo Covert of the Chicago Bears, San Francisco’s Russ Francis, who’s fresh off a SuperBowl win, and New York Giants star Lawrence Taylor!
JESSE says that no one can deny how tough these pro football players are, but he doesn’t think they’ll stand a chance against the best the World Wrestling Federation has to offer.
MEAN GENE is at a gym in New York City, alongside HULK HOGAN, who’s working out. Gene spots him as Hogan finishes up a benchpress set, and sits up to address Gene.
HOGAN: “You know something, Mean Gene, the Hulkster’s been livin’ in this gym, man! I’ve been pumping the iron, taking my vitamins, saying my prayers, and I can feel the power of Hulkamania coursing through these 24-inch pythons, brother! The showdown of the century is just over a week away, brother, and Ted Dibiase, I’ve got just one question for ya . . . whatcha gonna do when Hulk Hogan and all the little Hulkamaniacs run wild on YOU?”
HOGAN then poses for the camera as the segments ends.
VENTURA just shakes his head, and says that pumping all the iron in the world won’t help that idiot, because the bottom line is, Ted Dibiase is the better wrestler, and the better man, and there’s no way Hogan can beat him!
VINCE isn’t so sure, and puts Hogan over as the biggest name in the wrestling world, and says that with the millions and millions of fans around the world cheering him on, he thinks Hogan just may beat the champion and leave the Garden as the new World Wrestling Federation champion!
NON-TITLE MATCH:
THE ISLANDERS (Haku & Konga) (w/ MR. Fuji) beat NICK DECARLO & BOB MARCUS. The champions are in top form here, as they pummel both DeCarlo and Marcus, not giving them a chance to get any offence going. In the end, Haku hit Marcus with a savate kick, with Konga then delivering a diving headbutt from the top rope on Marcus for the 3-count at 3:04.
VINCE and JESSE talk about the Islanders, and how impressive they’ve been since winning the WWF Tag Team titles.
VINCE then sends us to “ROWDY” RODDY PIPER, for another edition of PIPER’S PIT.
PIPER welcomes us to Piper’s Pit. His bodyguard, Hercules, lurks in the background. Piper says that his guest this week is MR. T, but T’s having second thoughts, and he then sends Hercules backstage to get him.
Hercules returns a moment later . . . with a life-sized cardboard cutout of Mr. T!!!
PIPER asks “Mr. T” why he wanted to come out Piper’s Pit this week. Obviously the cutout doesn’t respond. Piper says that being in the presence of greatness like Piper can leave some lesser people speechless, and says that’s obviously what’s going on with T.
PIPER spends the next few minutes insulting Mr. T, and then says that he wants to give the people a little preview of how the boxing match at WrestleMania is going to go.
Hercules hands Piper a boxing glove, which Piper puts on.
Piper then proceeds to punch the head off of the cardboard cutout, and says that’s what he’s going to do to Mr. T when they meet at WrestleMania!
VINCE and JESSE talk about what we just saw, and hype the Piper – Mr. T boxing match coming up at WrestleMania, as well as some of the other matches. Then they talk about today’s main event, between Big John Studd and Uncle Elmer.
BIG JOHN STUDD (w/ Floyd Creatchman) beats UNCLE ELMER (w/ Cousin Luke). Vince talks about the fact that Elmer is one of the few men in this sport that doesn’t give up much in the way of height or weight to Big John Studd, and says the two men are about as evenly-matched as two competitors can be. The action goes back and forth, though we don’t see much scientific wrestling, as this is a fight, plain and simple. In the end, Studd gets the win after slamming Elmer, and hitting a splash off the ropes for the 3-count at 6:24.
VINCE and JESSE wrap up the show, and hype next week’s show, which will feature a main event of WWF IC champion Tito Santana teaming up with the Can-Am Express to face Don Muraco and WWF Tag Team champions the Islanders! Vince reminds everyone that Hulk Hogan will be hosting Saturday Night Live on NBC next Saturday night, and Cyndi Lauper will be the musical guest.
