CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING ‘85
Channel 5 Studios, Memphis, TN
March 22, 1985
Broadcast in: Tennessee, Kentucky
Your Broadcasters: Lance Russell & Dave Brown
Interviewer: Michael St. John
Referees: Paul Morton, Jerry Calhoun & Paul Neighbors
-We go now to Channel 5 Studios here in Memphis to Lance Russell and Dave Brown-
Lance Russell and Dave Brown welcome us to “Championship Wrestling ‘85”. They announce a big main event today – “Ravishing” Rick Rude of the First Family of professional wrestling will battle the impressive rookie Billy Joe Travis. “Wildfire” Tommy Rich is out as we start off the show to discuss his budding rivalry with Rick Rude. Tommy corrects Lance and says this is about more than just Rude. It’s also about Jimmy Hart, Big Bubba Rogers and “the whole dadgum First Family”. Rich tells Lance that he has been around the CWA for a long time, and for that whole period Jimmy Hart has been pulling all sorts of stunts.
Tommy Rich is sick and tired of Hart managing to his cheat his way to the top here in Memphis. Now, he knows that a lot of great wrestlers have stood up to Hart, but the fact remains that Jimmy is still here! Tommy reminds Lance that he put a lot of dedication into chasing Harley Race for the NWA World Heavyweight Title. He got all farrred up about it, in fact! On April 27, 1981, he beat Race to reach the top of the mountain and become the World Heavyweight Champion. Well, that’s the same passion that Tommy has right now from running the First Family out of Memphis once and for all. It starts with Rick Rude, but it ends with Wildfire getting his hands on the skinny little weasel Jimmy Hart!
1) ”Wildfire” Tommy Rich pinned Bob Marcus at 1:34 with the Lou Thesz in a total squash.
Dave Brown is running down the card for this Monday, which will feature two six-man tag team matches. It will be the Memphis Three against the Devil’s Triangle, then Ricky Gibson is back with the Rock n’ Roll Express to face Eddie Gilbert, Rick Steiner and a partner of their choice. He is then interrupted by a man known around the world as one of the most dangerous competitors in professional wrestling today:
THE MASKED SUPERSTAR!!!!
A surprised Dave Brown admits that he was not expecting the Masked Superstar to be here today. Superstar tells Dave that he is a world traveler and he makes it his business to go where the hottest competition in this sport is. He has held many titles, but the NWA World Heavyweight Championship is the crown jewel. And since all eyes are on CWA, that’s where the Masked Superstar should be. The world champion gets all the respect, all the glitz and glamor, and all of the money. And speaking of money, The Masked Superstar wants to send a message out to a very special person watching today. “If all else fails, the answer is yes,” Masked Superstar says cryptically as he then shakes Dave’s hand and walks away.

Jerry “The King” Lawler, “Superstar” Bill Dundee and “Dirty” Dutch Mantell are out with Lance Russell as we come back from break. Lawler, Dundee and Dutch are abuzz by the surprise appearance by the Masked Superstar on Championship Wrestling '85. The King says he has beaten the biggest and the best in this sport – Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair and Terry Funk for example – but he has never faced the Masked Superstar. Once he settles his business with the Devil’s Triangle and if Masked Superstar sticks around, The King will be right here waiting to stand in the way of the man who says he wants to become NWA World Heavyweight Champion. Lance then announces that this Monday, it will be these three men against the Devil’s Triangle.
Dutch Mantell tells Lance Russell that himself, Dundee and Lawler are not the best of friends, but they trust each other. The Dutchman wonders if Adrian Street can say the same about his partners The Snake and One Man Gang, after what happened last Monday night? Bill Dundee pipes in and says it’s taken some time, but finally the cracks in the Devil’s Triangle are starting to show. You see, those dogs managed to dominate things when everyone here in the CWA was fighting on their own. There isn’t a group in this sport that can beat Dundee, Lawler and Mantell when they are all on the same page. The King agrees and says it will be proven this Monday night!
2) The Nightmares: Danny Davis & Ken Wayne defeated The Good Ol’ Boys: Phil Hickerson & Tommy Gilbert at 10:11 when Danny Davis caught Phil Hickerson with a dropkick off the top rope to score the pin. Davis and Wayne get a definitive win, after several weeks of feuding with the Good Ol’ Boys here in CWA.
“Hotstuff” Eddie Gilbert and Rick Steiner are out after the match and they call Tommy Gilbert over to the desk. Eddie says his dad was cheated today, but he can tell the world that Tommy will get things back on track when he teams with them this Monday night. Eddie complains about having to face the Rock n’ Roll Express again, but says after this Monday he will be done with them. They got their title rematch and they lost, just like they will lose again this Monday night at the Mid South Coliseum. Hotstuff International have the gold and the belts aren’t going anywhere any time soon.

COMMERCIAL BREAK:
------------
------------
“Ravishing” Rick Rude is out with Jimmy Hart and Big Bubba Rogers as we come back from break. Hart heard Tommy Rich out here earlier promising the moon and stars, but the Mouth of the South has one message for him: “Get over yourself Tommy because everybody has, baby!” Hart says Tommy Rich likes to brag about being a World Champion – well that was four years ago! “Tommy Rich – what have you done for us lately,” the manager asks. The answer is nothing! But someone who has set the wrestling world on fire for real is former Southern Heavyweight Champion and former Southern Tag Team Champion “Ravishing” Rick Rude.
The Ravishing One says he wants all the corn-fed, pasty-looking women out there in TV Land to feast their eyes on the best body in the sport. Then, take a loot at Tommy Rich – with his terrible bleach blonde dye job and a belly that hangs over his belt. Is this the kind of athlete that represents the people of Tennessee? Rick Rude doesn’t represent the people and does not want to represent the people – because he is better than they are. He is better looking, he is tougher and he has the ability to beat any man in the ring. Rich is a “former” champion, where “Ravishing” Rick Rude is a future champion! And there’s nothing Tommy “Dough Boy” Rich can do about that!
Lance Russell then asks Rick Rude about his opponent for today – Billy Joe Travis. Rude scoffs and asks if he is supposed to be impressed by Billy Joe Travis, who got some fluke wins. First of all, he saw Travis pull Kendell Windham’s tights last Monday. But the filthy cheater isn’t going to pull anything like that today because Jimmy Hart and Big Bubba will be in his corner to make sure that this match is fought fairly. Russell doubts Rude’s sincerity as the First Family head off to the dressing room.
3) Sweet Sensation: Stan Lane & Shawn Michaels defeated Roy Lee Welch and Ken Raper at 6:01 when Stan Lane connected with the super kick on Stallion to score the win.
Stan Lane and Shawn Michaels make their way over to the desk after their big win. Dave Brown mentions that they have been getting a lot of wins lately – over the Moondogs, the Nightmares and the Good Ol’ Boys – all while flying under the radar. Lane tells Dave Brown that he made a splash with the Fabulous Ones a few years ago, but he wanted to do it differently this time. He told Shawn Michaels when he brought him to CWA that they would put their nose to the grind-stone and just focus on getting wins. The championship committee can’t ignore wins.
Dave Brown announces that another challenge awaits this Monday night, as they face the very capable Bruise Brothers. Shawn Michaels says he has been watching Cash and Graham, and they have gotten their own share of wins in recent weeks over Mongolian Stomper and Stomper Jr. in tag team action. Lane pipes in and mentions that he has had his wars with the Bruise Brothers over the years. Those two have no hesitance to break every rule in the book to get a win. Well, this Monday, Stan Lane and Shawn Michaels are also willing to get down and dirty if that is what it takes to get their hands raised.

“Exotic” Adrian Street is out with Miss Linda before we get to our main event. Lance Russell asks where Jake Roberts and One Man Gang are – and if there is trouble in paradise? Street warns Lance not to stir up trouble, and says it is none of Lance’s business where his compatriots are! Russell questions if Street has been in contact with them since last Monday – does he even know WHERE they are today? Street tells “Gwendolyn” that this isn’t the BBC’s Panorama program, and Lance Russell is certainly no David Dimbleby! Street says all the matters is that the Devil’s Triangle will be in full force this Monday night when they will “scrub out those putrid little toerags” Jerry Lawler, Dutch Mantell and “Bill bloody, stinking Dundee”. Street motions for Miss Linda to follow him and they take off. Lance adds that the interview left us with more questions than answers.
4) TV Main Event: Billy Joe Travis pinned ”Ravishing” Rick Rude (w/ Jimmy Hart & Big Bubba) at 10:34 after a knee drop across the forehead. The finish saw Hart slide a roll of quarters to Rude, and then get up on the apron to distract referee Frank Morrell. Rude perched to use the foreign object, but Tommy Rich ran out, grabbed Rude’s arm, decked a few times and then laid him out with the roll of quarters! Big Bubba raced around the ring to brawl with Rich, but Rude was out and Travis redirected the referee to get the biggest win of his career.
"Wildfire" Tommy Rich and Big Bubba brawled at ringside after the match, as Rude laid knocked out in the ring. Jimmy Hart was throwing a fit as Kendell Windham came out and complained to the referee about the result. Travis charged him and began brawling with Windham, while Rich and Big Bubba tore it up at ringside. Wrestlers, officials, referees and Eddie Marlin had to come out and clear the ringside area. A groggy Rick Rude was then helped to the back by Jimmy Hart.
Jimmy Hart storms back out with Kendell Windham as Lance and Dave once again run down this Monday’s card. Hart says Tommy Rich just made the biggest mistake of his life! This Monday night, he wants his First Family to take on Tommy Rich and “this get-lucky punk” Billy Joe Travis. Kendell then butts in and says he respects Jimmy Hart, and he would like to volunteer for the match because he has revenge on his mind as well! Hart agrees and says Rude and Windham will show Rich and Travis what happens when you REALLY play with fire here in the CWA!
