THE WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION PRESENTS
CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING
SATURDAY, MARCH 15, 1985
TAPED MARCH 4 AT THE MID-HUDSON CIVIC CENTER IN POUGHKEEPSIE, NY
VINCE MCMAHON and JESSE “THE BODY” VENTURA are ringside to open the show, and they welcome us to another edition of WWF CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING!
VINCE and JESSE run down what we’ll see on today’s show, including the feature match, which will see “Soulman” Rocky Johnson square off with Don Muraco, with the devious Mr. Fuji in his corner. Jesse says Muraco is on a roll after beating Chico Santana last Sunday night at MSG, and he predicts another victory for the Magnificent One here today.
Plus, the Can-Am Express, Uncle Elmer and King Kong Bundy will be in singles action. We’ll also see Floyd Creatchman’s new clients, Big John Studd and Angelo Mosca, in tag team action! And, Roddy Piper will have Johnny V, Brutus Beefcake and Dino Bravo as his guests this week on Piper’s Pit!
THE CAN-AM EXPRESS (Tom Zenk & Phil Lafleur) beat TERRY SIMMS & LARRY DEE. Zenk and Lafleur make short work of their opponents, as Zenk pins Dee with a crossbody from the top rope at 2:10.
VINCE says that the Can-Am Express look ready for their shot at the Tag Team titles at WrestleMania, while Jesse says Fuji’s Islanders are unbeatable, and will still be the champions after WrestleMania.
MEAN GENE OKERLUND is standing in front of one of the dugouts in Yankee Stadium, where he’s joined by Yankees’ manager BILLY MARTIN. Gene asks Martin his thoughts about appearing as the guest ring announcer for the main event at WrestleMania.
MARTIN says that he’s been a fan of the World Wrestling Federation for many years, and says that it was an honour to be asked to be a part of an event the magnitude of WrestleMania! He hopes that everyone watching will make sure they’re either in attendance at Madison Square Garden on March 31, or watching at one of the closed circuit locations.
GENE asks Billy if he has any predictions for the main event, the World Wrestling Federation title match between champion Ted Dibiase and former champion Hulk Hogan?
MARTIN says that he thinks the Hulkster will pin Dibiase and become the World champion.
Back at the Mid-Hudson Civic Center, Vince and Jesse discuss Billy Martin’s participation at WrestleMania. Ventura says that Martin’s obviously lost his mind, if he thinks Hogan stands a chance against Dibiase, and says that the Yankees may be wise to look elsewhere for a manager this season.
VINCE then talks about the other celebrities that will be a part of WrestleMania . . . entertainer Liberace will serve as the guest timekeeper for the Hogan – Dibiase match, and the former boxing Heavyweight Champion of the World and one of the most recognizable names in sports history, Muhammed Ali, will serve as the guest referee for the main event.
JESSE says that Ali had better call the match down the middle, or the Body might just take it upon himself to get in the ring and knock Ali out!
Banjo music starts to play over the PA system, and Vince says that can mean only one thing, the country boys of the WWF, Uncle Elmer, Cousin Luke and Cousin Junior!
UNCLE ELMER (w/ Cousin Junior & Cousin Luke) beats JOHNNY K-9. K-9 attacks Elmer from behind before the bell sounds, but the advantage is short-lived. Elmer quickly gains the upper hand, then scoops K-9 up, falling forward into a slam, with all his weight coming down on top of K-9. Elmer’s not finished with him, though, and he runs the ropes, delivering a splash to his fallen opponent for the 1, 2, 3 at the 3-minute mark.
WENDI RICHTER (w/ Cyndi Lauper) beats THE MASKED SPIDER LADY. The Spider Lady’s identity may be a mystery, but she shows that she’s no slouch, and gives Richter all she can handle. However, Richter is able to get the win, with a Sunset Flip that puts the masked woman’s shoulders down for the 3-count at 4:29.
VINCE says that Richter is ready for her shot at Leilani Kai and the World Women’s title at WrestleMania.
MEAN GENE OKERLUND is in the control center for this week’s WRESTLEMANIA REPORT.
GENE says that we’re a little more than 2 weeks away from the biggest event in the history of wrestling . . . WrestleMania! The event will take place on Monday night, March 31, and will be available on closed circuit at venues throughout the Northeast:
He then runs down the matches that have been signed so far:
* LEILANI KAI defends the World Women’s title against former Champion WENDI RICHTER, who will have Cyndi Lauper in her corner!
* BRUTUS BEEFCAKE will face DAVID SAMMARTINO, who will have his legendary father, Bruno Sammartino, in his corner!
* Top athletes from the World Wrestling Federation and from the National Football League will take part in a big 20-man Battle Royal!
* THE ISLANDERS will defend the WWF Tag Team titles against THE CAN-AM EXPRESS!
* TV star MR. T will square off with “ROWDY” RODDY PIPER in a special BOXING MATCH!
* And the main event will see HULK HOGAN challenge WWF Champion TED DIBIASE for the title!
* Muhammed Ali, Liberace and New York Yankees manager Billy Martin will be involved in the main event!
We see short, pre-recorded promos from some of the wrestlers scheduled to take part in WrestleMania, including Hulk Hogan, WWF Champion Ted Dibiase, and Cyndi Lauper and Wendi Richter. We also hear from several of the wrestlers and NFL players that will take part in the 20-man Battle Royal.
VINCE and JESSE talk about the big 20-man Battle Royal that will take place at WrestleMania, featuring stars of the World Wrestling Federation AND some of the toughest men in the National Football League! Vince runs down some of the names that will be taking part in the match, including WWF superstars such as Big John Studd and Uncle Elmer, and NFL stars such as Jimbo Covert of the Chicago Bears, San Francisco’s Russ Francis, who’s fresh off a SuperBowl win, and New York Giants star Lawrence Taylor!
JESSE says that no one can deny how tough these pro football players are, but he doesn’t think they’ll stand a chance against the best the World Wrestling Federation has to offer.
KING KONG BUNDY beats SD JONES. Jones puts up a valiant effort here, but he’s just no match for Bundy. Bundy throws Jones around the ring like a ragdoll, and ends the match with the Avalanche. When the referee counts to 3, Bundy demands that he count to 5, which the referee quickly does!
During the match, JOHNNY V came out to ringside and appeared to be scouting Bundy, much like Floyd Creatchman was last Sunday night at Madison Square Garden.
MEAN GENE is at a gym, where HULK HOGAN and MR. T are working out. Gene talks about the tag team match that took place on MTV last Sunday night.
Footage is shown of the final minutes of the Hogan / Mr. T vs Piper / Dibiase match from the War to Settle the Score on March 9.
HOGAN: “Let me tell ya something, Mean Gene . . . for months now, Roddy Piper and Ted Dibiase have said that I don’t stand a chance against Dibiase at WrestleMania. Well, brother, everyone just saw what happened the last time I was in the ring with Dibiase . . . I pinned his shoulders to the mat for the 1, 2, 3, brother! We’re only two weeks away. March 31, WrestleMania, Ted Dibiase, whatcha gonna do when Hulkamania runs wild on YOU?”
GENE then asks Mr. T his thoughts on Roddy Piper and the boxing match that has been signed for WrestleMania.
MR. T: “Gene, despite everything he’s done, I don’t hate Roddy Piper, but I pity the fool! And at WrestleMania, I’m gonna shut that big mouth of his!”
GENE asks Hogan about Roddy Piper introducing the man known only as Hercules as his bodyguard last week.
HOGAN: “That’s not surprising, Mean Gene. Roddy Piper can’t fight his own battles, brother, so he went out and found someone to do it for him! That Hercules is a big dude, Gene, and I’ve heard he’s a monster, but if he wants to try his luck with the Hulkster, that’s just fine with me, brother!”
BIG JOHN STUDD & ANGELO MOSCA (w/ Floyd Creatchman) beat NICK DECARLO & BOB MARCUS. Creatchman leads Studd and his newest acquisition, “Big Nasty” Angelo Mosca, to the ring for the next match. The match lasts about 90 seconds, and sees Mosca and Studd manhandle their opponents. In the end, Studd locks Marcus in a bearhug, at the same time Mosca hoists DeCarlo up over his shoulder in a backbreaker. Moments later, the match is over, and Studd and Mosca are declared the winners by submission.
VINCE talks about this awesome pair, and mentions the altercation between Mosca and their colleague, Gorilla Monsoon, that took place last Sunday night on MTV.
JESSE says that Creatchman is a genius, and so far, his stable looks to be unstoppable!
VINCE then sends us to “ROWDY” RODDY PIPER, for another edition of PIPER’S PIT.
PIPER welcomes us to Piper’s Pit. His bodyguard, Hercules, lurks in the background. Piper welcomes his guests this week, one of the brightest minds in wrestling, JOHNNY V, along with BRUTUS BEEFCAKE and DINO BRAVO.
HOT ROD shakes hands with the three men as they come out to the set. “Luscious” Johnny says that Piper is a class act, and says that he almost feels sorry for Mr. T, because he knows what Piper is going to do to T at WrestleMania!
PIPER says that he knew Johnny was an intelligent man, and then talks to Dino Bravo, saying that it wasn’t that long ago that Bravo was teaming with that old dinosaur, Ivan Putski, here on TV.
BRAVO says that it took a while, but with Johnny V’s help, he finally realized that trying to get these idiot fans to like him, and teaming up with losers like Ivan Putski was getting him nowhere. Bravo says joining up with Johnny and Brutus was the smartest decision he’s ever made, and now his future is looking brighter than ever!
PIPER says that, speaking of old dinosaurs, Bruno Sammartino will be at WrestleMania, to watch his son David face Brutus.
BRUTUS laughs, and says that he’s glad Bruno will be at ringside, because he wants the old man to be close enough to see him humiliate David!
JOHNNY says that Bruno had better keep his nose out of the match, because he’ll be at ringside with Brutus, and if Sammartino tries anything, Johnny’s going to make him pay!
PIPER thanks the three men, and says that next week, Mr. T will be back on the Pit, most likely to try and back out of their boxing match at WrestleMania!
VINCE and JESSE talk about today’s main event, as Don Muraco, fresh off his count-out victory over IC champ Tito Santana at MSG, faces the popular Rocky “Soulman” Johnson!
DON MURACO (w/ Mr. Fuji) beats “SOULMAN” ROCKY JOHNSON. These two put on an exciting match, with plenty of offence from both men. As we pass the 5-minute mark, Johnson has the match well in hand, but when he goes to the top rope, waiting for Muraco to get up, Mr. Fuji climbs up on the apron and shoves Johnson to the mat. Muraco takes advantage of this, and goes to work on Johnson. After wearing the Soulman down, Muraco drops Rocky on his head with the reverse Piledriver for the 3-count at 8:10.
After the bell rings, Muraco pulls Johnson up off the mat, and delivers a second reverse Piledriver for good measure, much to the delight of Mr. Fuji!
VINCE and JESSE wrap up the show, and hype next week’s show. Vince reminds everyone that Hulk Hogan will be hosting Saturday Night Live on NBC two weeks from tonight, and says that while WrestleMania is sold out, the show will be broadcast live on closed circuit at locations throughout the Northeast.
