THE WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION PRESENTS:
THE WAR TO SETTLE THE SCORE
SUNDAY, MARCH 9, 1985
FROM THE MECCA, MADISON SQUARE GARDEN, IN NEW YORK CITY!
SHOWN LIVE ON MTV
GORILLA MONSOON and JESSE “THE BODY” VENTURA are ringside and welcome us to Madison Square Garden for the War to Settle the Score!
GORILLA runs down the five big matches we’ll see tonight . . . WWF Intercontinental champ Tito Santana defends the title against Don Muraco, who will have the Devious One, Mr. Fuji, in his corner . . . King Kong Bundy will square off with veteran Jose Estrada . . . David Sammartino will face “Playboy” Rip Rogers . . . and then the two huge feature matches, the first of which will see Wendi Richter and Donna Christianello square off against World Women’s champion Leilani Kai and her mentor the Fabulous Moolah . . . then the one everyone’s been waiting for, Hulk Hogan teams with TV star Mr. T to face the duo of WWF World champion Ted Dibiase and “Rowdy” Roddy Piper!
WWF INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE MATCH:
TITO SANTANA (Champion) VS. DON MURACO (w/ Mr. Fuji). These two are no strangers to each other, they’ve met several times in the past, and it was Muraco who Santana beat to start his first IC title reign. Now, Muraco is looking to avenge that loss, and regain the Intercontinental title belt in the process. Muraco attacks Santana before the bell, and gives the champion a savage beating in the early minutes of the match. Santana is able to battle back, and has the challenger in trouble. Santana charges at Muraco, who’s standing against the ropes. Muraco drops to the mat, and Santana flies over the top rope and to the floor. Muraco follows him out and the two men brawl around ringside. Santana gets the upper hand, and rolls Muraco back inside the ring, but before Tito can climb back in, Mr. Fuji intervenes, and hits Santana over the back of the head with his cane! Santana is unable to beat the referee’s count, giving Don Muraco the win via count-out!
GORILLA and JESSE talk about the match we just saw. Monsoon says that what we just saw is a prime example of why managers shouldn’t be allowed at ringside once the match begins. Jesse says that, while Muraco didn’t win the title, he was the one who got his hand raised, and that means future title shots for the Magnificent One.
MEAN GENE OKERLUND is backstage, in the interview area, and he’s joined by WENDI RICHTER, DONNA CHRISTIANELLO and CYNDI LAUPER. Gene talks about Richter and Christianello facing World Women’s champ Leilani Kai and the Fabulous Moolah in a tag team match later tonight.
RICHTER says she and Christianello have been training hard for this, and she’s predicting a victory.
LAUPER says that Richter is at the top of her game, and after Richter and Christianello are victorious tonight, Richter will go on to beat Kai for the World Women’s title at WrestleMania!
LAUPER then talks about how it’s great to see the WWF airing on MTV, and she thinks this is a partnership that will benefit both the WWF and MTV.
KING KONG BUNDY VS. JOSE ESTRADA SR. Estrada is no slouch, but he just can’t get anything going against the massive Bundy. Bundy squashes Estrada, hitting the Avalanche, followed by an elbowdrop, for the 3-count. Bundy yells at the referee that he wants a 5-count, so the ref, probably fearing for his safety, quickly slaps the mat two more times.
During the final moments of the match, “Pretty Boy” Floyd Creatchman came out to ringside, watching and making notes.
GORILLA and JESSE are joined at ringside by FLOYD CREATCHMAN. Gorilla asks Creatchman what business he had out here during the last match, with Creatchman saying that he’s always on the lookout for new clients, and he was very impressed with what he saw from Bundy.
VENTURA says that Creatchman mentioned yesterday morning on Championship Wrestling that he had signed Big John Studd to a contract, and had finalized negotiations with another wrestler as well.
CREATCHMAN says that his newest client is here tonight, he’s spent the last several months wreaking havoc in the Mid-South territory, where he held the Tag Team championship.
Creatchman then introduces “BIG NASTY” ANGELO MOSCA!
GORILLA and JESSE are both surprised to see Mosca, with Gorilla saying that we haven’t seen Mosca in the World Wrestling Federation in almost 5 years.
MOSCA grabs the mic from Gorilla, shoving Monsoon aside, and says that Creatchman is obviously a very smart man, he wanted to surround himself with the best, so he went out and got the biggest, meanest, nastiest wrestler on the planet, Angelo Mosca!
JESSE says it’s a pleasure to see Mosca again, and the two shake hands.
GORILLA says that he thought Mosca had retired. Mosca glares at Gorilla, then tells him that, while Monsoon wasn’t tough enough to make it in the world of professional wrestling and retired, Mosca says that as long as he can still go out to that ring and beat people up, he won’t retire!
Mosca then shoves the mic back into Monsoon’s chest, and he and Creatchman head to the locker room.
DAVID SAMMARTINO (w/ Bruno Sammartino) VS. “PLAYBOY” RIP ROGERS (w/ Sensational Sherri). Rogers, formerly one-half of the Ravishing Bodies, makes his way to the ring, led by Sensational Sherri, and he taunts ringside fans, even acting as though he’s going to hit one of the fans who was heckling him.
Then the roof nearly comes off the Garden as Bruno Sammartino emerges through the curtain, leading his son to the ring! Rogers yells at the fans to shut up, but they just ignore him. Gorilla Monsoon mentions on commentary that David was named Rookie of the Year by a very well-respected wrestling publication in the early 80s, and a lot of people expect big things from him.
Rogers tries to attack David when the match starts, but Sammartino moves out of the way, then hits the Playboy with several rights and lefts, much to the delight of the sold-out crowd here at MSG. The match doesn’t last much longer, as Sammartino has his way with the Playboy, and locks Rogers in a Bearhug for the submission victory!
GORILLA and JESSE talk about the next match coming up, a tag team match between Wendi Richter and Donna Christianello, with Cyndi Lauper in their corner, against World Women’s champion Leilani Kai and her mentor, the Fabulous Moolah!
A short video is shown, highlighting the recent events between Richter and Kai, as well as Lauper joining up with her friend Richter.
LEILANI KAI (Women’s Champ) & THE FABULOUS MOOLAH VS. WENDI RICHTER & DONNA CHRISTIANELLO (w/ Cyndi Lauper). The two teams are fairly evenly-matched, though Kai and Moolah are far more likely to take shortcuts than their opponents. That gives them an early advantage, when Moolah grabs Richter by the hair as Wendi is working over Kai, and pulls her to the mat. Kai and Moolah control the next few minutes, but in the end, Richter and Christianello get the win at 8:25 when Richter jumped off the top rope with a flying bodypress on Kai for the 1, 2, 3!
Afterwards, Lauper celebrates with Richter and Christianello in the ring.
GORILLA and JESSE talk about the main event, coming up next, as Hulk Hogan teams up with TV star Mr. T to face WWF World champ Ted Dibiase and “Rowdy” Roddy Piper!
A video airs, highlighting what led to this match. We see Dibiase attacking Hogan from behind on Piper’s Pit, with Roddy joining in on the attack, as well as footage of Piper showing up on the set of the A-Team and confronting Mr. T.
We see pre-taped comments from Hogan and Mr. T, followed by pre-taped comments from Roddy Piper and Ted Dibiase.
HULK HOGAN & MR. T (w/ Cyndi Lauper) VS. TED DIBIASE (WWF World champion) & “ROWDY” RODDY PIPER (w/ Hercules). The four wrestlers, and Hercules, get into an altercation as Howard Finkel is introducing the participants. It’s obvious that the referee is going to have his work cut out for him with this one!
Once the match starts, Hogan and Mr. T gain an early advantage, and keep Dibiase in their corner. But Roddy Piper comes in, and hits a low blow on Hogan, giving Dibiase a chance to recover. Dibiase rakes the eyes of the Hulkster, before dropping him to the mat with a clothesline, and stomping him. Piper comes in, and he and Dibiase double-team Hogan until Mr. T rushes into the ring and chases Piper out to the floor.
Dibiase whips Hogan into the ropes, to set up the powerslam, but Hogan holds onto the ropes, then charges at Dibiase, hitting a big clothesline that puts the champion on the mat. While that’s going on, Roddy Piper and Hercules are battering Mr. T on the floor. Piper grabs the ring bell, and goes to hit T with it, but Cyndi Lauper grabs it out of his hands. When Piper turns his attention to Lauper, Mr. T grabs him and slams Piper’s head into the ringpost.
Back inside the ring, Hogan has the upper hand over the WWF champ, and whips Dibiase into the ropes. Hogan connects with the big boot to the jaw, and Dibiase hits the mat. Hogan then bounces off the ropes and hits the Legdrop!!!
Hogan hooks the leg, and covers Dibiase for the 1, 2, 3!!!! Hulk Hogan has pinned the WWF Champion!!!
Outside the ring, Hercules nearly takes Mr. T’s head off with a lariat, as Roddy Piper grabs the WWF title belt from the timekeeper’s table, and jumps into the ring. As Hogan celebrates the pinfall over Dibiase, Piper blasts him in the head with the title belt!
Dibiase gets to his feet, and he and Piper puts the boots to Hogan!
Mr. T grabs a chair on the floor, jumps into the ring, and chases the heels off!
GORILLA and JESSE are then joined at ringside by HULK HOGAN, MR. T and CYNDI LAUPER.
MR. T says that he’s got Piper at WrestleMania, and that he pities the fool, because Piper’s in for the butt-kickin’ of a lifetime!
HOGAN, woozy from being hit with the belt, says that he pinned Dibiase here tonight, and he’ll do it again at WrestleMania!
GORILLA and JESSE wrap things up, and thank us for tuning in. Ventura reminds everyone to join him, and his co-host, Vince McMahon, on Championship Wrestling next Saturday morning for all the fall-out from tonight’s event!
