THE WORLD WRESTLING FEDERATION PRESENTS
CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING
SATURDAY, MARCH 8, 1985
TAPED MARCH 4 AT THE MID-HUDSON CIVIC CENTER IN POUGHKEEPSIE, NY
VINCE MCMAHON and JESSE “THE BODY” VENTURA are ringside to open the show, and they welcome us to another edition of WWF CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING!
VINCE and JESSE run down what we’ll see on today’s show, including the feature match, an Intercontinental title match between Champion Tito Santana, and challenger the Spoiler! Jesse predicts a new Champion, while Vince thinks Tito will retain the belt.
Plus, Bugsy McGraw, Don Muraco, Uncle Elmer and Dino Bravo will all be in singles action. WWF Tag Team Champions the Islanders will be in action.
Roddy Piper has issued an invitation to Mr. T to appear on Piper’s Pit this week. Hot Rod says that the whole thing with him and T has been a big misunderstanding. Plus, the Rowdy Scot said he will introduce his new “bodyguard” this week as well.
BUGSY MCGRAW beats JOHNNY K-9. McGraw is quickly becoming a favourite of the fans in the Northeast. He high-fives several fans on his way to the ring, then chases Johnny K-9 from the ring. Once the match starts, McGraw is all business, he pummels K-9, and puts him down with a powerslam for the 3-count at 2:58.
A video airs, highlighting Wendi Richter in action, set to Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”. The video ends with highlights of Richter’s match in Japan with Leilani Kai a few months back.
VINCE and JESSE talk about the video we just saw, and hype the Women’s title match coming up at WrestleMania between Richter and the Champion, Leilani Kai.
VINCE and JESSE then discuss the big event coming up tomorrow night at Madison Square Garden . . . “the War to Settle the Score”! The show will be broadcast LIVE at 9pm on MTV!
Five big matches will take place on the show, including two feature matches . . . World Women’s Champ Leilani Kai teams up with her mentor, the Fabulous Moolah, to face Wendi Richter and her friend Donna Christianello, and they’ll have Cyndi Lauper in their corner . . . and, the final match of the evening, a true “dream match”, Mr. T will step into the ring, as he teams with Hulk Hogan, and they’ll square off with “Rowdy” Roddy Piper and WWF World Champion Ted Dibiase!
DON MURACO (w/ Mr. Fuji) beats SD JONES. Jones gives the Magnificent One a tough match, but in the end, Muraco drops Jones on his head with the reverse piledriver for the pinfall at the 3-minute mark. After the match, Muraco jaws with some ringside fans that spent the whole match calling him “beach bum”. The fans obviously got under Muraco’s skin, as he pulls Jones up, and delivers a second reverse piledriver!
At that point, the referee demands that he leave the ring, or the decision will be overturned. Muraco shoves the referee aside, and leaves the ring.
VINCE and JESSE talk about what we just saw. Vince says it was a disgusting display from Muraco, but Jesse likes that Muraco is showing that killer instinct again.
MEAN GENE OKERLUND is in the control center for this week’s WRESTLEMANIA REPORT.
GENE says that we’re a little more than 3 weeks away from the biggest event in the history of wrestling . . . WrestleMania! The event will take place on Monday night, March 31, and will be available on closed circuit at venues throughout the Northeast:
He then runs down the matches that have been signed so far:
* LEILANI KAI defends the World Women’s title against former Champion WENDI RICHTER, who will have Cyndi Lauper in her corner!
* BRUTUS BEEFCAKE will face DAVID SAMMARTINO, who will have his legendary father, Bruno Sammartino, in his corner!
* Top athletes from the World Wrestling Federation and from the National Football League will take part in a big 20-man Battle Royal!
* THE ISLANDERS will defend the WWF Tag Team titles against THE CAN-AM EXPRESS!
* TV star MR. T will square off with “ROWDY” RODDY PIPER!
* And the main event will see HULK HOGAN challenge WWF Champion TED DIBIASE for the title!
* Muhammed Ali, Liberace and New York Yankees manager Billy Martin will be involved in the main event!
We see short, pre-recorded promos from some of the wrestlers scheduled to take part in WrestleMania, including Hulk Hogan, WWF Champion Ted Dibiase, and Cyndi Lauper and Wendi Richter. We also hear from several of the wrestlers and NFL players that will take part in the 20-man Battle Royal.
UNCLE ELMER (w/ Cousin Junior & Cousin Luke) beats TERRY SIMMS. Elmer completely overpowers his opponent, and puts Simms away with a splash off the ropes at 3:02.
NON-TITLE MATCH:
THE ISLANDERS (w/ Mr. Fuji) beat NICK DECARLO & BOB MARCUS. DeCarlo and Marcus pose no threat whatsoever to the reigning World Tag Team Champions, as the Islanders steamroll over them. Konga gets the win for the champs, hitting DeCarlo with a diving headbutt for the 3-count at 1:47.
VINCE and JESSE talk about the Islanders, and how they’ve been dominant champions, though Vince thinks that they may have their work cut out for them at WrestleMania with the Can-Am Express. Jesse is sure that Fuji will have the champs ready for that match.
VINCE then sends us to “ROWDY” RODDY PIPER, for another edition of PIPER’S PIT.
PIPER welcomes us to Piper’s Pit, and says that he has a very special announcement to make. He says that, there are several guys running around the World Wrestling Federation that have proven that they’re not above jumping him from behind, and taking cheapshots at the Hot Rod when his back is turned. He’s talking about guys like Hulk Hogan.
So, he went out and he found a man to watch his back, someone to make sure that nobody’s jumpin’ him from behind.
Piper introduces the man as HERCULES and says that he doubts anyone, including Hogan, will think about trying to jump him from behind with Herc around!
PIPER: “I want to bring this week’s guest out, because there’s been a misunderstanding, and ol’ Hot Rod wants to clear the air, man. I’m going to be the bigger man. Ya see, I took the Pit on the road a few weeks back, I stopped by the set of the A-Team, and Mr. T got in my face. I could have knocked him down a few pegs, man, but did I? Of course not, because that’s not the kind of guy I am! But I’d like for Mr. T to come on out here, so I can clear the air, and show him that there’s no hard feelings, man.”
A moment later, MR. T makes his way out, looking suspiciously at Hercules, before turning his attention to Piper.
PIPER: “Now hold on there, big fella, I don’t want no trouble out here, I just want to talk. Ya see, T, can I call you T?”
Mr. T just stares at Piper.
PIPER: “Alright then, T, I wanted you here this week, because I’d like to clear the air, I want to tell the world that I’ve got no hard feelings. You put yer hands on me, and got in my face, but that’s OK, I can look past that.”
Mr. T pulls the mic towards him, and starts to say something, but Piper pulls the mic back, cutting him off.
PIPER: “Now, I get how hard it must be, man. I’m sure there’s some jealousy, you look at ol’ Hot Rod, and see a man that you wish you could be! Anyone with even HALF a brain knows that I’m a better wrestler than you’ll ever be, but what these people may not know, is I’m a better BOXER than you T!”
This time, Mr. T snatches the mic out of Hot Rod’s hand. Hercules takes a step towards him, but Piper waves him off.
MR. T: “You think you’re a better boxer than me, Piper? Why don’t you prove it . . . you and me, in a boxing match, at WrestleMania!”
Piper’s eyes go wide, but only momentarily, and then he regains his composure.
PIPER: “You want to fight RP in a boxing match at WrestleMania? You got it! But I’m gonna warn ya, T, I’ve beaten up bigger and badder than you!”
The two men stand nose to nose, jawing with each other as the segment comes to an end.
MEAN GENE is backstage at the interview location with “PRETTY BOY” FLOYD CREATCHMAN. Creatchman says that he’s made his first acquisition . . . and brings out BIG JOHN STUDD!
CREATCHMAN says that he purchased Studd’s contract from Johnny V, and says that he’ll take Studd straight to the top of the World Wrestling Federation, starting with a victory in the 20-man Battle Royal at WrestleMania!
STUDD says he can’t wait to get in the ring with the biggest and baddest from the NFL, and toss them all out of the ring!
CREATCHMAN says that his next client will be revealed tomorrow night, live on MTV!
Before the start of the next match, VINCE and JESSE are joined by JOHNNY V. Johnny talks about selling Big John Studd’s contract to Floyd Creatchman for a very large sum of money, and then says that earlier this week, he finalized negotiations with another wrestler, and we’re going to see him in action right now!
Dino Bravo comes out to the ring for the match, and Johnny gives him some advice at ringside, before joining Vince and Jesse again to provide commentary for the bout.
DINO BRAVO beats ANDRE LAGO. Vince mentions early in the match that the last time we saw Bravo, a month or so ago, he teamed up with Ivan Putski, but this is a completely different Dino Bravo. He’s dyed his hair blond, and is wrestling a much more aggressive style. Johnny V says that Bravo realized that he wasn’t getting anywhere before, when he was pandering to these idiot fans, and teaming with losers like Ivan Putski.
Bravo is all over Lago as soon as the bell sounds, and he pummels Lago, pounding him into the mat! Bravo hits the side Suplex for the 3-count at 2:50.
Johnny V jumps into the ring to celebrate with his newest charge.
VINCE and JESSE talk about WrestleMania, coming up on March 31, and hype the WWF World title match between champion Ted Dibiase and challenger Hulk Hogan.
A video then airs, showing Hogan training for the match at a gym in NYC. We see Hogan working out with weights, and in the ring, training with a sparring partner. The video ends with Hogan saying that he’s in the best shape of his life, and he’s got the eye of the tiger! At WrestleMania, the WWF title will once again be his!
WWF INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE MATCH:
TITO SANTANA (Champion) beats THE SPOILER. The masked man gives Tito a tough challenge, but in the end, Santana gains the upper hand, and after running the ropes, he delivers a diving forearm smash that puts the Spoiler on the mat. Tito quickly hooks a leg and gets the 3-count at 7:34!
VINCE and JESSE wrap up the show, and hype the “War to Settle the Score”, tomorrow night at Madison Square Gardens, and it will also air live on MTV!
