AWA Catchup
12/28/84 TV highlights: AWA Commissioner Lord James Blears announced that new World Champion Superstar Graham’s first title defense will be on Super Bowl Sunday in St. Paul, MN against the winner of a tournament that will take place over the next several weeks on ALL STAR WRESTLING.
Bob Roop teams up with Steve “Dr.Death” Williams to win a squash match. Paul Ellering is not at ringside and Roop appears to be coaching Doc as much ashe is being he is tag partner.
Ellering & Graham are interviewed. Ellering says that the Legion of Doom’s full support is behind the new World Champ and, in a show of solidarity, that no Legion of Doom members will be in the upcoming tournament.
Ellering and the Road Warriors are interviewed. They claim Atlas & Reed’s title win as a complete fluke and that Hawk & Animal will make them the shortest reigning champions ever!
“Fabulous One” Steve Keirn(w/Baby Doll) beats Jerry Oski in a squash. In an interview, Baby Doll says that she needs Keirn to win the upcoming tournament and take the belt from Graham at the Super Bowl card!
Rick martel is interviewed. He says that he let the fans down and that he won’t rest until he has taken the title back from Graham!
Larry Zybysko, Nick Bockwinkel, Curt Hennig, Tenryu, & Jack Brisco all win squashes and are all announced as being tournament participants.
1/4/85 TV highlights:
1st round of the Super Bowl Tournament bouts:
1.Steve Williams (w/Bob Roop) defeats Larry Zybysko with the Oklahoma Stampede. Before the match, Paul Ellering enters the ring and tells Dr. Death that the Legion OF Doom is setting the tournament out. Williams informs Ellering that Bob Roop is his new advisor and he is quitting the Legion!
2. The Fabulous One (w/Baby Doll) defeats Steve O, but braces his feet on the ropes to secure the win.
3. Nick Bockwinkel defeats Jack Brisco after Larry Zybysko interferes. Bockwinkel announces that he and Zybysko have formed an exclusive club known as THE PLATINUM CLUB. Jesse Barr didn’t have the class, skill, or success necessary for membership and he is out! A new member, one of the greatest wrestlers in the sport today, will be entering the AWA soon. IF Zybysko has many more matches like the one he had earlier, he might be excluded from the Club, too!
4. Curt Hennig defeats Tenryu after a top rope dropkick. Larry hennig does color commentary and predicts his son will be the next World Champion!
1/11/85 TV highlights:
1st round of the Super Bowl Tournament bouts:
1. Mil Mascaras beats Boris Zhukov(w/Adnan El Kaissey ) via DQ when Adnan is caught interfering. In an interview, Adnan claims the Americans are conspiring aginst his Army, but he is bringing in some new soldiers who will help him dominate the AWA!
2. Billy Robinson defeats Jesse Barr via submission to the Boston crab in a hard fought match.
2nd Round Super Bowl Tournament bouts:
1. Steve Williams(w/Bob Roop) defeats “Fabulous One” Steve Kerin (w/Baby Doll) with the Oklahoma Stampede. During the bout, Roop stops Baby Doll from interfering on several occasions. After the bout, Baby Doll stalks away in a huff without checking on Keirn.
2. Nick Bockwinkel defeats Curt Hennig after Baby Doll comes to ringside and interferes on Bockwinkel’s behalf! Baby Doll leaves the ring with Nick afterwards!
1/18/85 TV highlights:
After they both win squash matches, Tag Champs Tony Atlas & Butch Reed get into a wild brawl with the Road Warriors that goes all over the TV studio! After the match, both teams demand a match at Super Bowl Sunday!
Sheik Adnan El Kaissey introduces his two new protégés: the returning Mr.Saito and The Masked Nightmare! Adnan once again claims the American wrestling promoters have conspired against him, but no amount of conspiracy can stop his Army with these men, along with Boris Zhukov!
Super Bowl Tournament Semi Final:
Mil Mascaras wrestles Billy Robinson. The winner will meet the winner of next week’s Steve Williams-Nick Bockwinkel bout in the finals. This match features a lot of classic mat wrestling. Neither man can get a finisher and the bout ends in a draw. Lord James Blears rules that the winner of Williams- Bockwinkel will get the World Title match on Super Bowl Sunday!
Nick Bockwinkel, Baby Doll, & Larry Zybysko come out together. Bockwinkel says that the Platinum Club is now complete! Baby Doll says that she only deals with winners and the so called “Fabulous One” was obviously a loser! Bockwinkel says there is one more man who is a member of this elite group, a man, like himself, who is a second generation wrestler, a man who has held championships wherever he has wrestled…GREG “THE HAMMER VALENTINE! Valentine comes out and Baby Doll immediately goes to his side! Valentine claims he has three goals: make money, win titles, and break bones! Valentine says it is an honor to be with the two greatest wrestlers in the AWA and the most beautiful woman! Baby Doll then challenges Steve Keirn to wrestle “my new man” on Super Bowl Sunday!
Rick Martel is interviewed. Martel says that he has been in the gym every day and he is back on the right track! He says that he has signed an open contract for Super Bowl Sunday and challenges any top wrestler to sign the bottom line! Martel wishes both Nick Bockwinkel and Steve Williams good luck in the finals of the Super Bowl tournament next week!
1/25/85 TV highlights:
The Samoans wrestle a squash match and then do an interview where they once again claim to be the best three man team in the world and challenge “any three men from either dressing room” to meet them on Super Bowl Sunday! Sheik Adnan El Kaissey comes out and accepts on behalf of his Army: Mr. Saito, the Nightmare, & Boris Zhukov!
Steve Keirn wins a squash match and then does an interview where he accepts Baby Doll’s challenge to wrestle Greg Valentine on Super Bowl Sunday! Keirn says that he made a big mistake trusting Baby Doll and he apologizes to all of his fans for his actions and attitude of the last several months.
Curt Hennig wrestles “Mr. Magnificent” Kevin Kelly (w/Paul Ellering). The barbarian jumps Hennig after Curt hits the top rope dropkick on Kelly! The two Legion of Doom members give Curt quite a beating until Larry Hennig hits the ring, swinging a chair!
Super Bowl Tournament Final:
Steve “Dr. Death” Williams (w/ Bob Roop) wrestles Nick Bockwinkel. World Champion Superstar Graham joins Rod Trongard on commentary. Early in the match, Larry Zybysko attacks Bob Roop from behind and slams him into the ringpost! Bockwinkel uses all of his tricks to keep the advantage for most of the bout. Dr. Death makes a comeback and hits the Oklahoma Stamped to score the iwn and earn the title shot on Super Bowl Sunday! As soon as the ref makes the three count, Paul Ellering leads the Barbarian, Kevin Kelly, & The Road Warriors into the ring and they deliver a terrible beating to Williams while Superstar Graham stands at ringside and watches! Bob Roop crawls into the ring, but he gets a beating, too! The Legion of Doom leaves Williams and Roop laid out in the ring!
2/1/85 TV highlights:
Greg Valentine (w/Baby Doll) makes his in ring debut and scores an impressive win over Jim Powers with the figure four. Steve Keirn comes out and does the Fargo strut around the ring which seems to enrage Baby Doll and amuse the Hammer.
Billy Robinson scores a win in a squash match and then announces that he has signed to meet Rick Martel on Super Bowl Sunday.
Larry Zybysko takes on Steve O and wins vis DQ when Bob Roop, looking for revenge for last week’s attack, hits the ring and beats Zybysko from pillar to post! Roop challenges Zybysko to a match on Super Bowl Sunday.
In a non-title match, World Champion Superstar Graham (w/Paul Ellering) takes on Pistol Pez Whatley in a non-title match. Whatley scores several near falls, but ends up submitting to Graham’s backbreaker.
A video is shown of Steve Williams working out. Williams has bruises and cuts on his face from last week’s beatdown, but he says nothing will keep him from winning the World Title or destroying Paul Ellering and the Legion of Doom!

1. Steve O pinned Jim Powers @ 6: 38 after reversing a flying bodypress.
2. Bob Roop beat Latty Zybysko via COR @ 10:07.
3. Greg Valentine beat Steve Keirn @ 13:57 after a knee to Keirn’s back as Keirn was distracted by Baby Doll.
4. Curt & Larry Hennig defeated The barbarian 7 “Mr. Magnificent” Kevin Kelly @ 14:29 as Curt pinned Kelly after a top rope dropkick.
5. Rick martel pinned Billy Robinson @9:09 after a flying bodypress.
6. In a wild brawl, The Samoans defeated Boris Zhukov, The Nightmare & Mr. Saito in 11:56 as Sika pinned Zhukov after a Samoan drop.
7. World tag Team Champions Tony Atlas & Butch Reed were DQ’d agains the Road Warriors when Reed blasted Animal with a steel chair that Butch took away from paul Ellering. Time of the decision: 13:33.
8. Steve “Dr. Death” Williams (w/Bob Roop) defeated Superstar Graham (w/Paul Ellering) to win the World Title @15:22. after hitting the Oklahoma Stampede. The referee tried to stop the match at the 5:00 minute mark when Graham opened up a cut on Williams’ head, but Roop & Williams convinced him to let the match continue. Roop kept Ellering out of the action. Reed & Atlas cut off the Road Warriors when they tried to interefere. After the match, Ellering and Graham argued and Ellering slapped the Superstar. Graham appeared to barely keep his temper under control!
