AWA Christmas Spectacular
12/25/84
Civic Center
St. Paul, MN
1. Bob Roop debuts, defeating young Jim Powers with a shoulderbreaker in 7:48.
2. Steve O brings in Sgt. Slaughter to help him gain revenge against Sheik Adnan El Kaissey & Boris Zhukov. This is a wild one and Slaughter does what Steve brought him in for and he finishes the Sheik with the cobra clutch in 12:15.
3. Jack Brisco wrestles Billy Robinson. These two legendary scientific wrestlers put on a clinic. The 15 minute time limit isn’t enough time to determine a winner and the bout ends in a draw just as Brisco locks in his figure four leglock!
4. “Fabulous One” Steve Keirn (w/Baby Doll) wrestles Mil Mascaras. This is an exciting, closely fought bout. Mil looks to be on his way to a win as he mounts the top turnbuckle for the flying bodypress, but Baby Doll gets involved and trips the Mexican legend, causing him to fall hard to the mat. Kerin takes full advantage and pins Mascaras at 12:59!
5. The Samoans(Afa, Sika, Samu) are ready to prove that they are the best three man unit in the world! Mad Dog Vachon has said he has a challenge for them and the crowd is stunned when Vachon comes to the ring with the Crusher and Verne Gagne! Gagne looks ancient, but he’s still quick and skilled enough to keep Afa and Sika off balance for the first few minutes of the bout. When Verne tags out, the match turns into a brawl! Mad Dog gets a piledriver on Afa and covers him, but the ref is distracted by Crusher. Samu comes off the top rope and headbutts Vachon in the back! Afa rolls onto Mad Dog and gets the pin! The Samoans have beaten the legends, but they know that they’ve been in a fight!
6. Pez Whatley takes on Nick Bockwinkel(w/Larry Zybysko). Zybysko interferes liberally, but Pez is still able to hold his own. At one point, Bockwinkel throws Whatley out of the ring. Whatley and Zybysko get into a verbal altercation that turns into a fistfight! Bockwinkel just leans back in the corner, folds his arms and watches! Jesse Barr attacks Pez from behind and helps Zybysko double team Pez, but the Pistol man knocks their heads together! Whatley rolls back into the ring, but the ref has counted him out! Bockwinkel wins by COR in 14:01!
7. Curt & Larry “the Axe” Hennig take on Legion of Doom members Steve “Dr. Death” Williams & The Barbarian (w/Paul Ellering). Curt is on a mission to run the Legion out of the AWA and he is extremely intense tonight! In the end, he brawls with the Barbarian outside the ring while The Ax battles Dr. Death inside the ring! Williams finally gives the elder hennig the Oklahoma Stampede to score the pin at 15:57! Ellering tries to help the Barbarian double team Curt, but Curt grabs a chair and runs them away!
8. Rick Martel defends the AWA World Title against Superstar Graham (w/Paul Ellering)! Martel’s scientific style gives him the early advantage, but the Superstar’s power keeps the challenger in the match. Graham works martel’s back, apparently setting the champ up for his backbreaker.At one point, Graham throws Martel out of the ring and Ellering picks the champ up and rams his back into the ring post! That really seems to turn the tide and at the 20 minute mark, Graham hoists Martel up in the backbreaker! Martel won’t submit! Finally, Martel just blacks out! The ref calls for the bell and gives the belt to YOUR NEW WORLD CHAMPION SUPERSTAR GRAHAM!
9. After a brief intermission to set up the cage, it’s time for our MAIN EVENT with the Road Warriors defending the World Tag Titles against TONY ATLAS & BUTCH REED! Hawk & Animal look indestructible early on and deliver a bunch of punishment as Ellering yells encouragement from ringside. The challengers fight back and manage to hold their own. Amazingly, at the 16:47 mark, Atlas presses Hawk over his head and rams him headfirst into the side of the cage! Atlas covers hawk! 1-2-3!!!!! TONY ATLAS & BUTCH REED ARE YOUR NEW AWA WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS!!!!!!!!!!
