January 18, 1985
Broadcast in: Tennessee, Kentucky
Your Broadcasters: Lance Russell & Dave Brown
Interviewer: Michael St. John
Referees: Paul Morton, Jerry Calhoun & Paul Neighbors
-We go now to Channel 5 Studios here in Memphis to Lance Russell and Dave Brown-
Lance Russell and Dave Brown welcome us to “Championship Wrestling ‘85”. There is a somber mood on the set as CWA matchmaker Eddie Marlin joins them to open the show. Marlin tells Lance that he is banning the footage of last week’s heinous attack on Jerry “The King” Lawler from being shown – because he will not encourage that kind of behavior. The sad fact is that Jerry is still in the hospital with a fracture in his neck, and he will not be back for quite a long time.
Eddie Marlin tells Lance that it hurts him to have to make a decision about the Southern Heavyweight Title because Lawler is out of action due to no fault of his own. He has hopes that Jerry will be able to have some involvement with CWA going forward, but unfortunately it looks like it won’t be as a wrestler. So unfortunately the Southern Title is being held up and next Monday night, there will be a one-night tournament. Next week, he will announce the brackets but today he just wants to send his best and best wishes from everyone at the CWA to Jerry “The King” Lawler.
Jake “The Snake” Roberts makes his way out now and he is smiling. Roberts says he is happy to take credit for being the man who slayed the King of Memphis. And now he wants Eddie to announce that he will be he in the tournament. Marlin says Roberts is the CWA Champion, but as his punishment for masterminding last week’s mugging he will be banned from the Southern Title tournament! However, Eddie does have a match signed for Jake this week – against former Southern Heavyweight Champion King Kong Bundy! Roberts looks stunned as Eddie Marlin storms off as the fans cheer.
MATCH ONE: THE WILD-EYED SOUTHERN BOYS VS. RANDY BARBER & JIMMY BACKLUND
Tracy Smothers pinned Jimmy Backlund at 6:34 with the super kick… The in-demand team of Barber and Backlund put up a good fight, but the Southern Boys come back strong and ultimately score the big win.
Tracy Smothers and Steve Armstrong stop by the desk after the match to wish a full recovery to Jerry “The King” Lawler. Lance then asks them about facing The Moondogs one more time coming up on Monday night. Tracy says he and Steve have been dealing with the Moondogs for a few months now and they are ready to settle this thing. Smothers says at the end of the day, he and Steve Armstrong will get the job done and put the mangy mutts down for the count.

King Kong Bundy is out with Lance Russell and Dave Brown to discuss his Southern Heavyweight Title match with Jake “The Snake” Roberts this Monday night. Bundy says he is not going in there to avenge Jerry Lawler, but he does think that the Devil’s Triangle are a bunch of scumbags. Bundy says he is putting aside his vendetta against the First Family for one week and one week only to take back his Southern Title and then he is getting back to taking out each and every one of “the weasel” Jimmy Hart’s henchmen until only the Mouth of the
South is left to face an Avalanche!
MATCH TWO: THE ROCK n’ ROLL EXPRESS VS. THE CANADIAN SPOILER & MIKE GEORGE
Ricky Morton pinned The Canadian Spoiler at 5:12 after the Rock n’ Roll Express connected with double dropkicks on the masked man.. Morton and Gibson were on fire in this quick match as they put down the very capable Mike George and this masked tag team partner.
Jimmy Hart was out with Rick Rude and Adrian Adonis, who will challenge the Rock n’ Roll Express this Monday night. The Mouth of the South is backed up by a large man wearing a suit and tie and a hat:
Jimmy Hart takes a moment to wish Jerry Lawler a great life in the hospital that he will be living in for the rest of his life, and then moves on to promise a surprise for the so-called Wild-Eyed Southern Boys and King Kong Bundy this Monday night. Because the man beside him is his personal bodyguard – Big Bubba Rogers. This man is here to make sure that nobody puts their hands on Hart, and to settle any scores necessary for the First Family.
The manager promises that Big Bubba Rogers will make a major impact here in CWA – and it will happen soon. Hart then says that he is standing with the next Southern Tag Team Champions. Rick Rude tells Lance Russell that the Morton and Gibson are a good team, but they cannot handle the Ravishing One and New York’s own Golden Boy.

The Devil’s Triangle are represented by Adrian Street, Miss Linda and One Man Gang after the match as they walk over to the desk. Lance Russell announces this Monday it will be Adrian Street against “Superstar” Bill Dundee in a grudge match and One Man Gang facing off with the Canadian Lumberjack Jos LeDuc. Street mentions that Dundee and LeDuc are both legends in the South – legends in their own time. Well look what the One Man Gang just did to Southern legend Ken Lucas! This Monday night, “imagine what we can do to you” Dundee and LeDuc! Street laughs as he walks off with Miss Linda and One Man Gang.

Dutch Mantell is out after the card announcements and tells Dave Brown that he cannot figure out what is going on with the Dirty White Boy. Dutch says White Boy keeps blaming his problems on Mantell, and yet the DWB clotheslined him on Monday night! The Dirty White Boy comes out and shouts that Dutch was in the wrong place as usual and as far as he is concerned, The Dutchman once again cost them a match. So as far as he is concerned, the Dirty White Boy is done teaming with Dutch because Mantel is a loser like each and every dope sitting in the studio audience.
The Dutchman responds by saying that the White Boy should shut his mouth. Now Dutch has had his problems with the people, but he has never come out here and run them down because at the end of the day they pay the bills. Dutch has had problems with Tommy Rich and Bill Dundee, but those were personal problems. And now, it looks like he’s about to have a personal problem with the Dirty White Boy if his former partner will face him in the ring on Monday night. The White Boy says the match is on and then walks off as Dutch walks up to the ring for the main event to some cheers!
TV MAIN EVENT: DUTCH MANTELL VS. GEORGE WEINGEROFF
The Dutchman gets the pin on George Weingeroff at 6:56 with the shoulder-breaker… Mantell seems to be genuinely surprised to hear some of the fans cheer him as he puts away the talented “King Cobra” George Weingeroff.
Lance Russell and Dave Brown are surprised after the match when ½ of the Fabulous Ones – Stan Lane – makes his return to the CWA. Dave and Lance welcome Stan back and ask what brings him here to Championship Wrestling this morning. Stan Lane tells Lance Russell that it’s great to be back in Memphis and he has some big news, but he can’t quite reveal it just yet. Lane says he just wanted to come out and say hello to the fans in the studio, but he will be back next week with some big news that will make some waves in the CWA.
