01/04/97 - The Brendan Byrne Arena East Rutherford, NJ
Buck Zumhoff and the Honky Tonk Man thank us for joining the original Rock 'N Roll broadcasting team for another exciting edition of ECW Weekend Warriors, who're ringing in the New Year with us live from the Brendan Byrne Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey! And being in New Jersey is unfortunately not the only sad news, as they're sad to report that this will be the final edition of ECW Weekend Warriors. But they are going out with a bang and tell us that they have an exciting show lined up for us tonight! In the Main Event the fate of the Light Heavyweight Championship will be decided as Champion "The Japanese Buzzsaw" Yoshihiro Tajiri will defend his Title against "The Lone Wolf" Dean Malenko! Also in action tonight the # 1 Contender for the Women's Championship; "The Hawaiian Princess" Leilani Kai will take the on Velvet McIntyre and The Texas Hangmen will battle it out with the Wiseguys! But first a very special New Year's match!
All referees officiated by Danny Davis and announced by Joel Gertner.
Match: Big Baby New Year w/ Old Man Zinter vs. Bobby Starr
Out comes Roadkill, this time dressed and billed as the Big Baby New Year. He's with Dutch Mantell who tonight is Old Man Zinter who calls the shots for the Big Baby at ringside. Bad news for Bobby Starr as the New Year sweeps out the old jobbers with a Diving Splash off the top. Ouch.
COMMERCIAL BREAK
"The Hawaiian Princess" Leilani Kai cuts a promo on Michele Starr whom she calls a Mahu. A Mahu who she threatens to break in half when she reclaims the ECW Women's Championship!
Match: Leilani Kai vs. Velvet McIntyre
Leilani Kai gets a warm-up match here against her old rival Velvet McIntyre who was also the last woman eliminated by "The Hawaiian Princess" during the # 1 Contender's Battle Royale! On commentary Michele Starr with Joe E. Legend mocks the "savage boar" who he will soon defend his beloved Title against. The two competitor's in the ring give us a good match that goes back and forth with both women getting some offense in before Leilani Kai begins dominating things after a running forearm smash and finishes McIntyre off with a Divin Splash.
Kai celebrates and looks to mock Starr, but is surprised not to find him in the commentary booth?! Just Joe E. Legend is with Buck and Honky when suddenly "The Gorgeous One" who snuck around the ring attacks her from behind! He stomps her out for a bit, but Leilani recovers and fighting her way to her feet clotheslines a stunned Starr out of the ring!
A video clip featuring snippets from matches that took place this past Wednesday's show. We see B. Brian Blair get Buried in the Basement by Pogo the Clown, Scott Taylor takes Ace Steel's head off with a Superkick, "Too Cool" Brian Christopher flattens Taka Michinoku with the Hip Hop Drop, "Mr. Wrestling" Steve Corino decapitates Spike Hughes with the Sliding C Lariat; and "Sugar" Shane Helms hits the Overcast on Jason Knight. Finally we see "The Canadian Crippler" Chris Benoit nail Randy Savage to the mat with a diving headbutt. The ECW Wednesday Nights logo then appears.
COMMERCIAL BREAK
ECW Correspondent Terri Runnels talks with "The Lone Wolf" Dean Malenko and his manager David Prazak about his attack on ECW Light Heavyweight Champ Yoshihiro Tajiri last week. Prazak assures us his client attacked nobody. Dean Malenko was provoked. Malenko says that if "The Buzzsaw" and that oaf Fuji thought that was an attack last week; then they're ill prepared for the ass-whooping they have coming to them right here tonight!
Tag-Team Match: The Texas Hangmen vs. The Wiseguys
"The Outlaw" Black Bart and Jesse Barr along with their manager Bob Orton Jr. pick up a win here tonight in a back and forth contest with Jimmy Cicero and Guido Falcone of the Wiseguys when Bart hits the Texas Trash Compactor diving legdrop on a very much flattened Cicero.
After the match we're taken back stage for Honky Tonk Man's "Rock 'N Rolling" segment where he sends us to a new video by band Cake with their latest hit; "The Distance!"
COMMERCIAL BREAK
Zumhoff and HTM welcome us back from the last commercial break of the evening and according to Buck who gets a little choked up; the final commercial break ever of ECW Weekend Warriors! They hype tonight's huge Main Event which will see "The Lone Wolf" Dean Malenko take on the man who won the Light Heavyweight Championship off him this past December at Wrestle Annual! Two of the greatest Light Heavyweights in the world today battling over the belt. Honky says there's no other way Weekend Warriors could have ended!
Gertner: The following contest is scheduled for one fall and is for the ECW Light Heavyweight Championship! Introducing first from Tampa, Florida weighing 212 lbs., and accompanied to the ring by David Prazak; he is the challenger "The Lone Wolf" Dean Malenko!
Malenko comes down to the ring all business as usual.
Gertner: And now introducing at this time hailing from Tokyo, Japan weighing 209 lbs., and accompanied to the ring by "The Diabolical" Mr. Fuji; he is the
ECW Light Heavyweight Champion "The Japanese Buzzsaw" Yoshihiro Tajiri!
Main Event Light Heavyweight Title Match: Yoshihiro Tajiri vs. Dean Malenko
These two men waste no time locking it up in the middle of the ring. There are several reversals and close calls; but first blood goes to Dean malenko who catches Yoshihiro Tajiri with a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker which almost gets him a two count. "The Lone Wolf" keeps right on top of his opponent and he owns the first quarter of the match dominating "The Japanese Buzzsaw" whom he hits with a powerbomb off the second rope and several suplexes. Each time he makes the cover, Tajiri kicks free.
The tide changes however, when Yoshihiro stuns the crowd by countering a charge from Malenko with a hurrancanrana pin! And almost gets the three! Dean keeps in the fight, but Tajiri begins rallying back and connects with several kicks as well as a Frankensteiner that sets up the Shining Wizard! Dean ducks it, but "The Japanese Buzzsaw" is quick to follow this up with a toe hold that lets him hit the springboard moonsault! 1! 2! Dean kicks out! From here thought Tajiri takes control of the match, hitting a Dragon Suplex on Malenko for another two count.
Dean finds himself in some real trouble however when Yoshihiro Tajiri locks him in the illegal Tarantula hold! Davis makes the count, and "The Buzzsaw" drops it before the 5 count can be administered; but as the ref leads Tajiri away; Mr. Fuji grinds salt into the eyes of Malenko! Dean falls back kicking and screaming while the usually reserved David Prazak gives chase to Fuji with his clipboard! The damage is done however and Tajiri drags the blinded Malenko into the center of the ring where he hits the Brainbuster! 1!... 2!...
Dean kicks out right before the 3! Yoshihiro isn't finished however and pulls Dean up for a powerbomb! But as "The Lone Wolf" lands on Tajiri's shoulders he throws his wait and plants "The Buzzsaw" with Dean now seated on his chest! And he begins pounding Tajiri's head in! Malenko is having trouble with his eyes, but he fends off the continual attacks of Yoshihiro as he throws kick after kick at him! Dean manages to lock in several holds to slow down the pace of the match and buy him some time as he slowly wears Tajiri down! He hits a bridged Northern Lights suplex for a two and traps Tajiri in both a surfboard he squirms out of and a Boston Crab! But Yoshihiro makes it to the the ropes! Later in the match however Yoshihiro catches a second wind and
after sending Dean reeling with chops and kicks; he hits the handspring back elbow! He then runs the ropes and hits the springboard moonsault!
Right into Malenko's knees! Dean Malenko looks fatigued, but he back up and fighting with Yoshihiro Tajiri for a hold on "The Buzzsaw's" legs he traps him in the Texas Cloverleaf! And this time there's no escape! Tajiri surrenders! And Dean Malenko is once again the ECW Light Heavyweight Champion!
Lights Fade.
