1984 FLORIDA CATCH UP THREAD
KEVIN SULLIVAN VS DUSTY RHODES continued to rage during NOV and DEC. With the men trading back and forth the title several times.
However, Rhodes was the champion when NWA WORLD CHAMP RIC FLAIR came through for a tour that saw go to a 60 DRAW with Flair and then another match that saw SULLIVAN and his family attack both RHODES AND FLAIR when it appeared Rhodes was on his way to capturing the belt. Flair in a vtr interview a week later warned SULLIVAN that he didn't need his help to beat Rhodes, as he had done it time and time before, so Sullivan just better stay out of his business or else.
Rhodes enlisted the help of his cousin DIRTY RHODES, his good friend BARRY WINDHAM and the GREAT AMERICAN BRAD REHINGANS to help wage war against Sullivan's family.
Sullivan's family grew. He sent THE FALLEN ANGEL into the deep woods of MICHIGAN. Out out a lake she walked, with a chain over her shoulder, she had an ANIMAL behind her. That animal was none other than GEORGE THE ANIMAL STEELE. Sullivan also went after a weak, dejected and confused BARRY ORTON. He took Orton under his wing. During a match with Dusty, Sullivan called Orton out the the ring and took him to the back. 2 weeks later Orton appeared with Sullivan and sported short curly blond. Sullivan called him THE DREAM and Orton called himself THE AMERICAN DREAM DUSTY RHODES.
Sullivan would also take under his wing DIZZY HOGAN. Hogan would have an intensive bloody matches with DIRTY RHODES which would include Hogan beating Rhodes in a LOSER HAS HIS HEAD SHAVED MATCH! Sullivan then began simply referring to Hogan as THE BARBER, who carries big pair of scissors with him.
On XMAS night in a big 8 man LOSER OF THE FALL LEAVES FLORIDA match it was SULLIVAN'S FAMILY Sullivan/Dream/Barber/Animal vs THE DREAM TEAM Dusty/Dirty/Windham/Rheigans which would see Rheingans give DUSTY a low blow while Animal and Barber were fighting Windham and Dirty outside the ring. Sullivan would then small package Dusty for the pin and DUSTY HAS TO LEAVE FLORIDA!
FLORIDA TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS DAVID SAMMARTINO/RICK MCGRAW remain the champs. They would turn down the offer of THE ASSASSIN to guide them. The Assassin would vow revenge against them. In a side note The Assassin continues to hype up BARRY WINDHAM but has temporarily given up that quest with Windham helping Dusty Rhodes. The Assassin warned Barry not to do it but Barry felt it was necessary to help out his good friend.
McGraw/Sammartino would first turn back the scientific challenge of GREG GAGNE/MIKE GRAHAM. Then THE ASSASSIN would bring unite two of his good friends TERRY FUNK/STAN HANSEN who looked as if they would be the ones to take the belts. Only to have the team fall apart after an incident where Hansen nailed Funk with a LARIAT after McGraw ducked. Funk and Hansen would start a feud that continues to this day. It has become one of the bloodiest feuds in Florida history. the fans really haven't taken sides in this one, but if anybody is the fan favorite, Hansen would have the slight edge.
Sammartino/McGraw would also turn back the challenge of THE DREAM/THE ANIMAL of the SULLIVAN family. The Assassin would not be down for long and has brought in a second ASSASSIN and are now embedded currently in a feud over the FLORIDA tag belts.
THE FLORIDA TITLE was a real HOT POTATO. In early November SCOOT MCGHEE would lose to fellow fan favorite THE FANTASTIC ONE STAN LANE. Lane would then feud with newcomer BEAUTIFUL BOBBY EATON and his manager JAMES E CORNETTE with EATON resting the title from Lane. A week later TERRY TAYLOR would beat Eaton for the belt when Lane would distract Eaton and Taylor roll him up for the win. A furious CORNETTE would warn Lane and Taylor that he would have revenge. A couple of weeks later when Taylor was defending against former champ SCOTT MCGHEE . With referee BILL ALPHONSO down CORNETTE, EATON and another man would hit the ring and attack both men with Eaton coming off the top rope and nailing Taylor with a leg across hit throat. the other man would put McGhee on top of Taylor and Cornette would revive Alphonso and roll him into the ring and make the 1-2-3 count and declare McGhee the new champ. Cornette would introduce this new man as DENNIS CONDREY and he and EATON together have ruled the tag team scene around the country as THE MIDNIGHT EXPRESS. Lane and Taylor have formed a team to battle Cornette's team. McGhee is still the current champion and denies that he knew anything about the interference, despite Cornette claiming that McGhee was behind it.
NWA WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPION TIGER MASK made several trips in the last two months in Florida. He made successful defenses against Taylor, Lane, McGhee Gagne and Graham. Gagne and Graham remain hot on Tiger Mask tail.
THE WOMEN'S WORLD CHAMPION WENDI RICHTER continued her feud with THE FABULOUS MOOLAH. Moolah would bring in her protoge' LEI LANI KAI her her weaken Richter so she can reclaim her title. Richter has had several partners to help her in her war with Moolah, the most recent her good friend WENONA LITTLE HEART.
I just want to apologize to everyone that I have gotten so far behind. Work got real crazy in late October and finally Christmas is over, maybe I can get back on track again.
