CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING ‘84
Channel 5 Studios, Memphis, TN
December 14, 1984
Broadcast in: Tennessee, Kentucky
Your Broadcasters: Lance Russell & Dave Brown
Interviewer: Michael St. John
Referees: Paul Morton, Jerry Calhoun & Paul Neighbors
-We go now to Channel 5 Studios here in Memphis to Lance Russell and Dave Brown-
Lance Russell and Dave Brown welcome us to “Championship Wrestling ‘84”. Eddie Marlin is out to open the show, with two major announcements about the upcoming Memphis Christmas Special on 12/23. We now know that Southern Heavyweight Champion King Kong Bundy will defend against Jerry “The King” Lawler in a match where there must be a winner. Marlin says a lot of people have been asking how he can guarantee that there will be a winner. And he has an answer! There will be a definitive winner because… the match will take place inside a 15-foot high steel cage!
The fans in the studio cheer Eddie Marlin’s announcement, but out comes Jimmy Hart. Hart is going nuts and complaining that the match isn’t fair – Bundy isn’t an animal and shouldn’t have to step into a cage to wrestle! Marlin tells Hart to calm down because he has another thing to say. The First Family’s Rick Rude will have a shot at guarding the door for that cage match. Jimmy perks up, but then asks what Marlin meant by “a shot”. Marlin says all Rick Rude has to do is beat Jos LeDuc this Monday night – the winner guards the door! Hart doesn’t like this one bit, but out comes Jos LeDuc, who chases Jimmy to the dressing room.
MATCH ONE: JAKE ‘THE SNAKE’ ROBERTS & JERRY ‘THE KING’ LAWLER VS. JIMMY BACKLUND AND & RANDY BABER
The Snake and The King defeat the most in-demand team in wrestling at 5:34 when Lawler comes off the second rope with a flying fist drop… Lawler and Roberts defy rumours of tension by working swiftly to put away the very capable duo of Backlund and Barber.
The brand new CWA Heavyweight Champion Tommy “Wildfire” Rich makes his way out to shake hands with the fans around the ringside area. Lance and Dave congratulate Tommy, and mention that he is going to be thrown right into the fire this week when he faces The Dirty White Boy. Rich first gives a shout out to Bill Dundee, who he calls one of the best wrestlers in the world today. Rich then says that he is ready for all-comers, including The Dirty White Boy. Rich also mentions that he has unfinished business with Dutch Mantell, so The Dutchman can step up and challenge for the belt whenever he wants. Rich says he’s all fired up about taking on every challenger that the CWA can throw at him!

Southern Tag Team Champions “Hotstuff” Eddie Gilbert and his father Tommy Gilbert are out after the break. Eddie first says he is disgusted to see his manager Jimmy Hart treated with such disrespect by Eddie Marlin! Now on to business, this week he and his “dear father” Tommy Gilbert have a match with Tracy Smothers and Steve Armstrong. Eddie wants to know just what these two rookies did to deserve a title match? Lance mentions that they beat The Moondogs last week – but Edde insists that it was a fluke. Eddie says he and his father will show Smothers and Armstrong exactly where they belong in the pecking order on Monday.
Dave Brown then mentions that Eddie Marlin is putting together a title match with the winners facing The Rock n’ Roll Express on 12/23. Eddie Gilbert does not think that will happen, but then it might because Eddie Marlin has a vendetta against the First Family. Tommy tells Dave that he and his son are more than capable of taking care of two sissy boys like Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson. And hey – you never known when things will FLAME up? The Gilberts laugh as they head up to the ring for our next match.
MATCH TWO: SOUTHERN TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS THE GILBERTS VS. RUFUS R. JONES & MARK RAGIN
“Hotstuff” Eddie Gilbert scores the win over Mark Ragin via pinfall at 6:34 with the Hot Shot… The Gilberts are challenged by Ragin and his uncle Rufus R. Jones, who more than hold their own in this match. The finish sees Eddie Gilbert land a questionably low shot and then connects with the Hot Shot.
Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler and Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts make their way out to the desk. Lance questions them on what seemed like a little dissention last Monday night. Lawler says he watched the footage back and to be honest he can understand why Jake would have been a little upset, but at the end of the day it was Bundy who put his hands on The King first! Lawler only responded.
Jake Roberts snickers and says The King sees things his way, and The Snake sees this his own way. However, that won’t change the fact that this Monday night they will be on the same page to face King Kong Bundy and Adrian Adonis. Roberts says he will make it his personal goal to make sure that the Memphis Christmas Special will be a night that nobody every forgets – and that starts by getting a big win over The First Family this week. Lawler agrees and says Adonis and Bundy should be ready for a hell of a fight.

The Dirty White Boy and Dutch Mantell are out after the break. The Dutchman says he got screwed last Monday, and he is sick and tired of being sick and tired. That’s why he wants to see get the CWA Heavyweight Title back on the waist of someone that he respects. And he knows the DWB will give him the first shot at the belt! The Dirty White Boy tells Lance Russell that Tommy Rich has been a thorn in his and Dutch’s side for way too long. This Mondy night, all that pretty white hair that Tommy has is going to turn blood red!
MATCH THREE: DUTCH MANTELL VS. JOSH STROUD
The Dirty Dutchman defeated USFL standout Josh Stroud via pinfall at 7:15 when he connected with a knee drop off the second rope… The Dirty White Boy was in Dutch’s corner during the match and got his shots in behind the referee’s back. Stroud showed some fire, but ultimately went down for the count to the much more experienced Dutch Mantell.
Rick Rude makes his way out and tells Lance Russell that Jimmy Hart is freaking out backstage and he can’t figure out why. Rude reminds Lance that he has already beat Jos LeDuc once – all he has to do is do it again! Lance reminds Rude that he didn’t get a clean win last week, but the Ravishing One says that is totally untrue. Rude says LeDuc is just jealous of him because he is much better looking than “that bald freak”, has a better body and is a much better wrestler. Rude says LeDuc should just learn to face facts – there are tons of Jos LeDucs out there, but there is only one Rick Rude!

King Kong Bundy defeated Tom Zenk via pinfall at 4:45 when he connected with the Avalanche Splash and stayed on top for the five count… Bundy took out his anger over the steel cage match signing on poor Zenk by slamming him, stomping him and splashing him into oblivious.
