(News Story from The Spartanburg Herald Journal)
Professional wrestling returned to the Memorial Auditorium in downtown Spartanburg Sunday night, but it wasn't the usual promotion taking center stage. Southern Championship Wrestling set up shop and promoted six matches that may have lacked in star power, but didn't come up short on action! The fans in attendence were treated to matches that were evenly matched and hotly contested throughout the evening.
In the main event, young upstarts George South and The Italian Stallion battled for twenty three minutes in a match that saw both men control the action at various points. The Stallion was bloodied early, and it looked like South may get a quick win, but Stallion battled through and survived the early onslaught. George South too ended up busted open late in the contest which seemed to even things a bit. In the end George South attempted a splash from the top rope, but Stallion rolled out of the way. Immediately after, he hoisted South up and delivered a running powerslam to get the winning pinfall.
In other action.....
Proud patriot Cpl. Kirschner bested Russian Igor Volkoff in a rough and tumble bout that looked more like a back alley brawl than it did a wrestling match. The action started quickly as Volkoff attempted to sing the Russian National Anthem, but was dropkicked from behind by the Corporal! The battle went around ringside and ended at 9:30 when Volkoff struck Kirschner with his Russian Flag pole and earned a disqualification. He continued the attack after the decision, and Kirschner had to be helped from the ring while the angry fans pelted Volkoff with trash on his way back to the locker room.
In tag team action, the young brother duo of Brad & Bart Batten put up a good fight against the cagey team of Carl Fergie & Ox Baker, but in the end, it was the experience of the veterans that won out. They took advantage of their youthful opponents, and used several illegal tactics to control the action. Baker finished off Bart with his dreaded heart punch for the pinfall victory after 19:05 of action.
Jerry Oates claimed a victory over Phil Hickerson with a surprise sunset flip that held Hickerson down just long enough for the three count at 12:22.
Gary Royal notched another win as he defeated Steve Doll via pinfall at 11:17. Doll disputed the decision however, as he claimed that Royal had put his feet on the ropes for leverage to gain the pin fall.
In the opening bout, youngsters Jimmy Backlund and the masked Cheetah Kid wrestled to a 15:00 time limit draw. Both young men show a lot of promise and fought hard in the contest.
Southern Championship Wrestling plans to promote more shows in the region in the near future, but no dates or locations are known at this time.
