TOTAL NON-STOP ACTION WRESTLING!
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 1996
BROADCAST ACROSS THE UNITED STATES ON TNT
BROADCAST LIVE FROM THE GRAND OLYMPIC AUDITORIUM IN LOS ANGELES, CA
CHRIS CRUISE opens the show at ringside, and welcomes his co-host, LEE MARSHALL.
CRUISE and MARSHALL welcome us to the historic Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles, California for another edition of NWA Total Non-Stop Action!
This week . . . The 8 participants in the NWA X Division title tournament will meet in a Battle Royal to determine the seeding for the tournament, which begins next week . . . Lord Norman Smiley takes on the Belfast Bruiser . . . And in the main event, the NWA Championship Committee has given Terry Funk a rematch with Jeff Jarrett after the way last week’s match ended, and this time the NWA title will be on the line!
A video is shown, highlighting recent events between Madusa Miceli and Harvey Whippleman, including Madusa defeating Whippleman in an arm-wrestling match two weeks ago, and beating Harvey by count-out in a wrestling match last week. Footage is then shown of Harvey returning to the ring last week with Big Van Vader, and the subsequent brawl between Vader and American Ace.
CRUISE and MARSHALL are joined at ringside by NWA TV Champion AMERICAN ACE and “MADE IN THE USA” MADUSA MICELI.
ACE talks about the incident last week with Vader, and then asks the NWA promoters to sign a match between him and Vader, he doesn’t care where, or when, he just wants Vader in the ring.
Footage is shown of Ace teaming with the Great Muta to defeat the Steiner Brothers in a friendly, scientific match at Tokyo’s Sumo Hall this past August.
ACE talks about the trip to Japan this past summer, and says he would love to go back. Chris Cruise then says that the NWA is working with Antonio Inoki and New Japan Pro Wrestling to bring some of the top wrestlers from New Japan to the US to wrestle for the NWA!
MATCH #1
8-MAN BATTLE ROYAL:
PARTICIPANTS: DISCO INFERNO, KID KASH, DEVON STORM, JUVENTUD GUERRERA, CURRY MAN, GREAT SASUKE, HAYABUSA and JUSHIN LIGER.
The 8 men tear into each other as soon as the bell sounds. Cruise and Marshall have their work cut out for them, trying to call this match, as the participants fly all over the place!
The first one to go is DISCO INFERNO, at 4:55, when Devon Storm charges at Disco and clotheslines him over the top rope. About 90 seconds later, KID KASH is sent over the top rope by Juventud Guerrera and we’re down to 6.
DEVON STORM makes the mistake of spending too much time on the top turnbuckle, waiting for one of the other wrestlers to get up, when Hayabusa comes over and delivers a standing dropkick, knocking Storm’s feet out from under him. He crotches himself on the top rope, and then Hayabusa hits another dropkick that knocks Storm off the top turnbuckle and to the floor at 7:45.
CURRY MAN is the next to go, around the 9-minute mark, when a backdrop from the Great Sasuke sends Curry Man up and over the top rope, and down to the floor. We’re down to the final four competitors – Great Sasuke, Jushin Liger, Juventud Guerrera and Hayabusa.
As we near the 11-minute mark, JUVENTUD GUERRERA is eliminated by the Great Sasuke, bringing us down to the final three competitors.
Sasuke, Liger and Hayabusa kick the match into overdrive, all three men throw everything they’ve got at each other. For the next three minutes or so, the three men hit high-risk move after high-risk move, trying to wear the others down enough to eliminate them.
At the 14-minute mark, HAYABUSA is eliminated by Jushin Liger.
That leaves JUSHIN LIGER and THE GREAT SASUKE as the final two participants!
The two men try everything to get the other out. As we near the 16-minute mark, Liger whips Sasuke into the corner. Liger stands on the second turnbuckle, and delivers several punches to Sasuke. Sasuke still has some fight left, though, and he grabs Liger by the legs, lifts him up, into position for a Powerbomb. Liger punches Sasuke a few times, trying to get him to let go of him, but Sasuke holds on, and dumps Liger over the top rope!
The Great Sasuke has won the Battle Royal!
Jushin Liger comes back into the ring, shakes Sasuke’s hand, and raises him arm.
CRUISE runs down the seeding for the X Division title tournament:
#1 Great Sasuke
#2 Jushin Liger
#3 Hayabusa
#4 Juventud Guerrera
#5 Curry Man
#6 Devon Storm
#7 Kid Kash
# 8 Disco Inferno
That means that the first round of the tournament will see Sasuke vs Disco Inferno, Liger vs Kash, Hayabusa vs Storm and Juvy vs Curry Man.
An electric guitar version of “O Canada” begins to play (similar in style to Jimi Hendrix’s version of the Star Spangled Banner).
COACH D’AMORE leads THE CANADIAN GLAMOUR BOYS (SHANE SEWELL & SEAN MORELY), PIERRE OULETTE and RICK “THE MODEL” MARTEL to ringside. D’Amore is waving a hockey stick with the Canadian flag attached to it.
D’AMORE brings his men out and joins CRUISE and MARSHALL at ringside. D’Amore then introduces everyone to TEAM CANADA, the greatest collection of wrestlers to ever come out of the greatest country on earth!
D’AMORE says that he’ll be sending Shane Sewell and Sean Morely, the Canadian Glamour Boys, after the NWA World Tag Team titles, and Oulette and Martel after the TV and World titles! He says that it won’t be long before Team Canada controls the NWA, and when that happens, they’ll be leaving this festering cesspool called America, and taking all the gold back to Canada!
“God Save the Queen” brings LORD NORMAN SMILEY, tailed by JEEVES, to the ring for the next match. As Smiley paces in the ring, “Londonderry Air” plays as the blue collar Irishman, THE BELFAST BRUISER, makes his way to the ring.
VS.
MATCH #2:
LORD NORMAN SMILEY (w/ Jeeves) beats “THE BELFAST BRUISER” FIT FINLAY. Bruiser pummels Smiley early on, causing his Lordship to complain to the referee about Finlay’s closed fists! The referee admonishes Finlay, but the Bruiser doesn’t pay any attention, he continues to pummel Smiley, much to the delight of the fans.
As we near the 7-minute mark, Jeeves makes his presence felt, as he trips Finlay as he runs the ropes. The Bruiser is back up to his feet quickly, and turns his attention to Jeeves at ringside. The referee is focused on Finlay as he yells at Jeeves, and doesn’t see Smiley pull what looks to be brass knux out of his trunks, and smash Finlay in the back of the head with them!
Finlay hits the mat like a ton of bricks, and Smiley quickly capitalizes, covering the Irishman for the 1, 2, 3!
After the match, Smiley celebrates in the ring, then snatches the ring mic from Gary Michael Cappetta, and runs down the fans before turning his attention to Finlay. He says that the Irish, the drunken slobs that they are, have picked fights with the English for decades, and each time they do, the result is the same as the result here tonight . . . the English emerge victorious.
Smiley then talks about Team Canada being introduced earlier, and says that there’s a group that the fans can look up to, he says that Canadians are a lot like the English, they’re civilized and classy, and he’s sure Team Canada will make fine role models for the fans of the NWA.
While Smiley is talking, he doesn’t notice Finlay get back to his feet. Finlay drops Jeeves with a clothesline, then tears into Smiley, throwing haymakers with reckless abandon. Smiley dives out of the ring, and hightails it to the locker room, leaving poor Jeeves in the ring.
Finlay turns his attention back to Smiley’s servant. He picks Jeeves up, and drops him with the Celtic Cross!
We go to a pre-recorded NWA CONTROL CENTER segment with STAN LANE.
LANE talks about the goings-on in the National Wrestling Alliance, including the upcoming 8-man tournament for the NWA X Division title, Shane Douglas showing up last week, and the introduction of Team Canada this week.
LANE then talks about BATTLEBOWL, which will air LIVE on Pay-Per-View on Saturday night, December 28. He says that there will be five Lethal Lottery tag team matches, and the winning teams will take part in the 10-man, every man for himself BattleBowl Battle Royal!
Plus, we know that the finals of the X Division title tournament will take place at BattleBowl and the NWA World title will be on the line!
BattleBowl is shaping up to be the biggest event in the history of the National Wrestling Alliance!
We see a video montage, set to Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man”, of ATOMIC TITAN and POWER WARRIOR KENSUKE SASAKI, the ATOMIC WARRIORS, in action in Japan.
CRUISE talks about the Atomic Warriors, Atomic Titan and Kensuke Sasaki, and says that while NWA fans are familiar with both men, they’ll be making their NWA debut as a team very soon.
CRUISE and MARSHALL are joined at ringside by “THE FRANCHISE” SHANE DOUGLAS and SENSATIONAL SHERRI.
DOUGLAS says that Terry Funk came out here near the end of last week’s show, and said that he would face Douglas, but since then, Shane says he’s been trying to get the NWA to sign the match, but they keep telling him that Funk is refusing. He says that the promoters are telling him that Terry Funk is afraid of him, the thought of having to face the Franchise again is keeping Funk up at night!
DOUGLAS says that Funk can’t duck him forever, and while he’s waiting for Funk to grow a pair and agree to wrestle him, he’s setting his sights on Jeff Jarrett. He says that he’s got no problem with Jarrett personally, he doesn’t give a shit about him one way or the other, but Jarrett has something that Douglas wants, the NWA World title, and if he has to go through Jarrett to get his belt back, then so be it!
CRUISE says it’s time for the main event, a rematch between Funk and Jarrett, and this time the NWA title will be on the line! Plus, the NWA has said that if Chris Candido or Jacques Rougeau come out to the ring, whether they interfere or not, they’ll be fined and suspended!
VS.
MAIN EVENT
NWA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP:
JEFF JARRETT (Champ) (w/ Capt. Lou Albano) VS. TERRY FUNK. As the match starts, Chris Cruise informs us that there’s only about 7 minutes or so remaining in the show. Funk dominates most of the match, pounding Jarrett from pillar to post, but Jarrett is able to hold on, and the TV time runs out. Gary Michael Cappetta informs us that the match is a Draw.
CRUISE and MARSHALL quickly wrap things up, and hype next week’s show, which will feature the first match of the X Division title tournament between Great Sasuke and Disco Inferno.
