Chris: “Welcome and hello this is AWA Southern Championship Wrestling: WE WRESTLE HERE, and joining me is DUTCH MANTELL, and Dutch, a rebirth of sorts, the American Wrestling Association is BACK, and Dutch the big news is that on October 10, in Nashville, Tennessee, we will crown a BRAND NEW AWA World Heavyweight Champion!

Dutch: “That’s right, Crispy Cruiser, and that is a prestigious world title held by men like Nick Bockwinkel . . . Verne Gagne . . . and of course, Jerry Lawler!

Chris: “Speaking of which our colleague BONI BLACKSTONE will be conducting a very special interview with the greatest AWA World Heavyweight Champion of all time, the great Verne Gagne, who has some VERY interesting comments about the state of professional wrestling in 1994 as we head into 1995. “With the lovely Symphony by my side, I shall enter your city and show the wrestling fans what TRUE music is all about as I, The Maestro, deliver the ULTIMATE masterpiece, every match a musical movement of genius, and take a standing ovation at the end of the evening when I capture the AWA World Heavyweight Championship!

Chris: “Er . . . all due apologies, Mr. Gilbert, I will make a note of that the next time. Lets get down to it, October 10, it’s the biggest prize in wrestling history, the AWA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE is up for grabs for whoever can take it that night, how do you see things going in Nashville?

Eddie rubs his chin: “WEEEEELL let me tell you, Crispy Cruiser, I see it going like this. Time and time again, I have proven myself to be the world's GREATEST wrestling mind and wrestler, and on October 10, history is gonna be made because not only on that night will the GREATEST AWA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT champion of all time will be crowned, it will mark the night that THIS man: YOURS TRULY, FINALLY WINS HIS FIRST WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE!

Missy jumps in: “LET ME SAY SOMETHING TO ALL THESE PEOPLE, you are soooooo lucky to have a great wrestler like Eddie Gilbert here in the AWA!

Missy: “NO, REALLY! He is handsome, he is brave, and he will make a world champion you can aaaaaall be proud of!

Boni Blackstone: “Wrestling fans, welcome, this is Boni Blackstone on location for AWA Southern Championship Wrestling, and it is my privilege to be sitting next to none other than that greatest AWA World Heavyweight Champion of all time, the great Verne Gagne, and Mr. Gagne, thank you for your time.

Verne: “Boni, it is great to be here, and I am very excited about what his happening in Nashville!

Boni: “As is the entire wrestling world, but first a few questions for you. Considering the history between the WWF and the AWA, were you happy to see Vince McMahon go to jail?

Verne: “Well, no, Vince is a man with a family, and I would not wish prison time on anyone, Boni.

"That said, Vince built a wrestling empire on pushing wrestlers who maybe had a better look than wrestling ability in the ring, and from what the Federal Government says, it seems to me that ‘look’ was shall we say for lack of a better word, 'enhanced', so to me, it’s a case of the chickens coming home to roost. I am sad for Vince, I hope he can work his way out of jail soon, but overall it was a dark cloud over the entire wrestling industry, not just Vince McMahon.

Boni: “After Mr. McMahon was incarcerated, it seemed the entire wrestling world imploded. No WWF, no more WCW, about a year ago the entire wrestling world seems to have been started from almost scratch, what do you think of the product so far.

Verne: “Well, Boni let me tell you, I have been watching very closely, and let me tell you I cannot believe the amount of talent there is out there. I had no idea. But, sadly, I see some promoters making not only the same mistake Vince made before his house of cards fell down, but taking it once step further. For instance, a few weeks ago, Greg came over to my house and we watched a pay per view together, and I could not believe what I saw with my very own eyes.

“First, these two wrestlers allegedly fought each other all over the city. They took cabs to try and get away from one another and you could tell it was not a real wrestling match, everything was staged. Like a TV show.

"Then, magically, these two fellows end up in the arena, just as the pay per view is ending, but that is not enough. After the match, another fellow shows up, and brings a giant 10’ lizard to the ring, threatening to bite one of the wrestlers!

“I mean, Boni, is this wrestling, or a freak show? WHO THE HECK WOULD BOOK THIS?

“Now, call me old school, and don’t get me wrong---there were some terrific matches on that card Greg and I watched together------but the reason the AWA was successful in its heyday is because when fans bought a ticket to an AWA wrestling card, they at the very least knew they would see REAL WRESTLING, not some sort of sick circus show. And, in my opinion, based on what I have seen in the past year, the wrestling public is getting tired of the same old circus---and wants to see WRESTLING. GOOD WRESTLING. REAL WRESTLING. The AWA- WE WRESTLE HERE. That’s the motto, and I think that is what the good fans in Tennessee, Kentucky, Ohio, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, and Texas and all across the country REALLY want to see.

Boni: “The AWA has not been in existence for over three years. What makes you think it is relevant in today wrestling landscape?

Verne: “Because most wrestling fans remember the name and its heritage and tradition as being a world title that represents TRUE wrestling. I can tell you from experience, wrestling fans in this part of this country are the smartest in the world.

"You wont catch any wrestling fan watching this TV trying to convince you that a mullet-wearing cokehead wearing green and black tights teaming with an Undertaker lookalike no one has heard of yet would actually draw a dime in Chinese money as a World Tag Team Championship combination---those fans, promoters and their fans would NEVER get something with the history behind it like the revival of the AWA- they just aren't bright enough to get it.

"But I know these fans HERE will, and will appreciate the prestige of the AWA title. And, to show my commitment to this event October 10, I want to let the world know that the belt I hold on my lap right now is the title belt I retired on October 8, 1980. And on October 10, 1994, in order to show my support for the revived American Wrestling Association, I will PERSONALLY AWARD THIS TITLE BELT TO THE WINNER OF THE EIGHT MAN TOURNAMENT IN NASHVILLE.

Boni: “Verne Gagne, that is amazing news, and our time today was a privilege. Thank you for your time. Wrestling fans, we will be right back with more AWA Southern Championship Wrestling after this!
