Continental Wrestling Association Monday, Oct. 21, 1984 Mid-South Coliseum, Memphis, TN 1) 1st Round Tournament Match: The Rock n’ Roll Express: Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson defeat The Moondogs: Spot & King (w/ Sir Oliver Humperdink) at 8:34 when Morton threw Spot into King, and then rolled him up for a surprise pin. 2) 1st Round Tournament Match: Dutch Mantell & The Dirty White Boy defeated ”Wildfire” Tommy Rich & Tracy Smothers at 10:08 when Mantell attacked Rich with Shoo Baby behind the referee’s back while Smothers and the White Boy were brawling, which allowed Mantell to steal a pin. 3) 1st Round Match: Jerry “The King” Lawler & Jake “The Snake” Roberts fought King Kong Bundy & Rick Rude (w/ Jimmy Hart) to a double count-out at 11:45 when all four battled around ringside and then fought to the dressing room. 4) 1st Round Match: The Gilberts: “Hotstuff” Eddie Gilbert & Tommy Gilbert defeated The New Generation: Tom Zenk & Steve Doll via pinfall at 7:07 when Tommy landed a back suplex on Doll to score the win. The Gilberts receive a bye into the finals. 5) The Mongolian Stomper defeated Phil Hickerson via pinfall at 7:45 with a running boot to the chest. INTERMISSION #1 6) Semi-Final Tournament Match: The Rock n’ Roll Express: Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson defeated Dutch Mantell & The Dirty White Boy via pinfall at 19:04 when Morton and Gibson score the stereo dropkicks on the Dirty White Boy. The finish saw Mantell once again try to belt Morton with Shoo Baby, but out came “Wildfire” Tommy Rich to grab the bullwhip from out of his hand. White Boy got distracted and then dropkicked as Mantell chased Rich around the ring. 7) Korchenko defeated ”JYD” Norvell Austin via pinfall at 6:04 when he connected with a running clothesline on the JYD. 8) CWA Heavyweight Champion ”Superstar” Bill Dundee defeated Robert Fuller at 12:41 when he came off the top rope with the Bomb’s Away knee drop across the chest. This was a hard-fought match between two good friends. INTERMISSION #2 9) Tournament Final: The Gilberts: “Hotstuff” Eddie Gilbert & TommyGilbert (w/ Jimmy Hart) defeated The Rock n’ Roll Express: Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson via pinfall at 22:56 to become the brand new Southern Tag Team Champions. Morton and Gibson were clearly tired, but they put up a heck of a fight. It looked like Morton had a pin on Eddie Gilbert after a dropkick, but Tommy broke up the pin with a knee drop off the second rope with a knee drop to Rick’s neck. Robert Gibson came in and began brawling with Tommy, while Eddie pulled himself up, rolled up Morton and pulled a handful of tights to steal the win! The Gilberts celebrated with Jimmy Hart on the floor, while Robert Gibson tended to Ricky Morton in the ring.

I really enjoyed this show. I was a little sad to see the Moondogs leave the tournament in the first round, but when they're facing the Rn'R Express, I guess I can't really expect them to go over. Still, I've always been a fan of the 'Dogs, so it was a little depressing to see them lose.
I think the match of the night for me was the Lawler/Jake - Rude/Bundy match. That's a money match if ever there was one! I hope to see plenty more of those two teams.

You nailed my thoughts exactly Chito. On one hand I enjoy the Moondogs, I enjoy Dink, and really enjoy seeing them getting a push, but what heels ahead of them do you pull back? Certainly not Dutch Mantell. Certainly not the First Family. I LOVE Eddie rebounding with a tag title win here with Pops. An awesome surprise. The Gilberts vs. The RnR's really has my interest piqued. Really like the caveat of mentioning the friendship between Fuller and Dundee, I'm hoping that leads to more matches, but in all fairness Rob needs to do something big after being pinned cleanly twice. Jealousy can easily develop amongst friends.
And Lawler/Jake vs. Bundy/Rude is as money as money gets, especially in Memphis. So many questions, so much history, and so many possible variations make for real excitement. I really love the prospects of this one. Fantastic work Commish, I am absolutely loving Mempho.

Yeah, I totally get your guys feelings on the Moondogs. I would caution not to get your hopes up too much about them. I like them but don't have any plans for them to be the top heel team in CWA. I think they have value in having lower midcard feuds, but ultimately work best putting over teams higher up in the pecking order IMO.

I don't disagree with any of that Justin. As much fun as I think it would be, you can't put them any higher on the card than they are, and who else could be better in that role other than them? You are using them to perfection, I wasn't trying to deny that. It's really a compliment to the roster you put together more than anything. That team is perfect in that role, but if need be, could immediately work up the card and be a suitable replacement. Short term, or even for an extended period. A great piece to have in your back pocket so to speak. Far as I'm concerned, everything is working to perfection in Mempho.

Finally Tag Team Champions that the Memphis people can be proud off. The Gilberts are going to be a force to be recken with.
Loved the Tournament.

Fun show. Really enjoyed the Tag Tournament. Was surprised in a good way to see the Gilberts win it. Thought for sure the Rock 'N Rollers would be the new Champs.

Overall great show and I guess this is the beginning of a long rivalry between Eddie Gilbert and The R and R's

Eddie finally gets back on the winning track and in a huge way by winning the Tag Titles with his dad, I hope Shaq is right and this is the tip of the iceberg for a Gilbert-RNR feud.
The Snake kept his promise for another week and had Lawler's back, maybe you can trust a Snake after all..........
I don't think the war between Mantell-Rich is close to over, but as much as I hate to say it, Tommy may need to go find a bit of a more rough neck partner if he is going to have to deal with Mantell and DWB, Tracy is great inside the ring, but I am not sure if he can get as down and dirty and Dutch and Anthony.
