They welcome us to Kawasaki for this week’s episode of NTV’s World Wrestling Kingdom!
On today’s show, we’ll see Toshiaki Kawada in action!
Stan Hansen teams up with Scott Norton to face two up-and-coming junior heavyweights in Shinjiro Otani and Koji Kanemoto!
Two other gaijin teams square off, as the Miracle Violence Connection of Steve Williams and Terry Gordy meet the Can-Am Express!
And, we have a HUGE main event, as the legendary trio of Antonio Inoki, Tatsumi Fujinami and Riki Choshu face the three of the men looking to lead the promotions into the future, Mitsuharu Misawa, Kenta Kobashi and Jun Akiyama!
TOSHIAKI KAWADA (w/ Shinya Hashimoto & Kensuke Sasaki) defeats TAKAO OMORI (w/ Yoshihiro Takayama). On commentary as the match starts, Wakabayashi notes a recent article in “Weekly Pro Wrestling” magazine, where Omori and Takayama talked about forming a tag team. Omori is getting better with each match, but here, he just can’t withstand the brutal assault from Dangerous K!
Kawada nearly takes Omori’s head off with a vicious buzzsaw kick, then hits the Gamengiri for the 1, 2, 3!
After the match, Kawada takes the house mic. He says that the Kings of Destruction are expanding their group, Kensuke Sasaki will join them, and the group will be known as the Holy Demon Army.
STAN HANSEN & SCOTT NORTON defeat SHINJIRO OTANI & KOJI KANEMOTO. The young junior heavyweights Otani and Kanemoto just get steam-rolled by Hansen and Norton here! The two big Americans take turns pounding their smaller opponents into the mat.
Otani and Kanemoto do turn the tables late in the match, as they focus on Norton’s legs, trying to keep him down on the mat where his power isn’t much of an advantage. However, Stan Hansen comes in and nearly decapitates Otani with a Lariat! Otani, who isn’t the legal man, rolls out of the ring, and spends most of the remainder of the match lying on the arena floor!
Norton gets back to his feet, tags in Hansen, and the big cowboy then hits Kanemoto with a Lariat as well! Kanemoto crumbles to the mat, and Hansen covers him for the 1, 2, 3!
After the match, Hansen gets on the house mic, and says that he wants whoever wins the match for the King’s Crown between Mitsuharu Misawa and Tatsumi Fujinami on next week’s TV show!
THE MIRACLE VIOLENCE CONNECTION: “DR DEATH” STEVE WILLIAMS & TERRY “BAMM BAMM” GORDY defeat THE CAN-AM EXPRESS: DOUG FURNAS & DAN KROFFAT. This tag team match is a lot more competitive than the last one, as Furnas and Kroffat, who have been tagging together for years, hold their own against the MVC.
The action goes back and forth, but as we pass the 15-minute mark of the match, Doc and Gordy start to gain the upper hand. As Williams pummels Kroffat outside the ring, Gordy hoists Furnas up, and then drives him into the mat with a Powerbomb for the 1, 2, 3!
The commentary team reminds us that in two weeks time on this program, we’ll see the Miracle Violence Connection square off with the Kings of Destruction, Shinya Hashimoto and Toshiaki Kawada, in a match to crown the very first Tag Team Crown champions!
Before the main event, we see two highlight packages. One featuring the Fujinami, Inoki and Choshu team, and another featuring the Misawa, Kobashi and Akiyama team.
The commentators talk about how Akiyama is only a few years into his career, but already the top guys like Misawa and Kobashi have enough faith in him to have him join them for this match against three legends!
TATSUMI FUJINAMI & ANTONIO INOKI & RIKI CHOSHU defeat THE SUPER GENERATION ARMY: MITSUHARU MISAWA & KENTA KOBASHI & JUN AKIYAMA. The legends, particularly Inoki, get a huge ovation from the fans here in Kawasaki as they make their way to the ring. This match is an all-out WAR! Akiyama, who has the most to prove, starts out for his team, and surprises everyone by rushing Choshu, and tearing into him with forearm shots! Choshu is caught off guard, but he rebounds quickly, delivering some vicious kicks to Akiyama.
There’s a very stark difference here in the philosophies of these two teams. The team of Inoki, Fujinami and Choshu, all proponents of “strong-style” focus on strikes and looking for submissions, while the Super Generation Army prefer to throw bombs and go for big moves, looking to put their opponents down for the 1, 2, 3!
As we pass the 30-minute mark of the match (though it’s been edited down for TV), the two teams really kick the match into another gear! We get some big moves and nearfall after nearfall!
The tension that has been building between Misawa and Fujinami, the week before their historic clash for the King’s Crown, seems to reach a breaking point. At one point late in the match, as Fujinami moves a little too close to Misawa’s corner, Mitsuharu slaps Fuji! This enrages Fujinami, and he goes after Misawa on the apron, but the two are quickly separated.
In the end, Fujinami gets the win for his team around the 35-minute mark, as he hits Jun Akiyama with the Dragon Suplex for the 1, 2, 3!
Afterwards, Fujinami gets on the house mic and says that he’s going to teach Misawa a lesson about respect in their match!
The show ends with Misawa and Fujinami face to face, jawing at each other!
Wakabayashi, Fukuzawa and Takeuchi wrap things up, and hype next week’s show, which will be a HUGE night of wrestling from Tokyo’s historic Nippon Budokan! There will be a big double main event on that show, first we’ll see two of the toughest big men in the sport, as Stan Hansen squares off with Terry “Bamm Bamm” Gordy! Then, the big one, as Tatsumi Fujinami and Mitsuharu Misawa meet to determine the very first King’s Crown champion!
