Eric Bischoff: Welcome to Great American Wrestling! We have an incredible show for you this evening as we are just days away from the world heavyweight title tournament this Sunday night at the Memphis Mid-South Coliseum. Wrestlers from all over the world have made their way to the GAW in hopes of being crowned our first world champion. You will see some of these new stars tonight along with many of our great returning wrestlers. And we have a huge main event, as Curt Henning faces Jeff Jarrett right here on this program!
Bobby Heenan: All these new stars coming in and they couldn’t get me a decent announcing partner?
Eric Bischoff: In addition to seeing many of the stars who want to lay claim to heavyweight title gold, we will hear tonight from the new Tag-Team Champions of the World, the Rock and Roll Express who defeated the Heavenly Bodies to win the titles last weekend in Louisville.
Bobby Heenan: Stole the tag team titles is more like it. I can’t wait to hear what Cornette has to say about all this.
Eric Bischoff: We’ll hear from Jim Cornette later in the program, but let’s start with a man who needs no introduction, one of the most legendary names in all of pro wrestling, a champion from coast to coast, let’s welcome Terry Funk!
Terry Funk: Thank you and it’s great to be a part of Great American Wrestling. I heard there’s a title on the line this weekend. I’ve won belts in every part of this country. I’ve gone overseas and brought back gold. This weekend will be no different. I sought out the best competition in the world, and that’s right here in the GAW. To all you wrestlers who don’t know about the legend of Terry Funk, you damn sure better by the time I step in the ring this weekend in Memphis.
Eric Bischoff: Terry Funk is in the GAW! He is sure to be a favorite in the heavyweight title tournament this weekend. Let’s go to the ring for our first match and another contender who has a shot to walk away with the title this weekend, the newcomer One Man Gang, who is in the ring against Scott Putski.
Match #1
One Man Gang defeats Chris Adams via pinfall.
—--Commercial Break---
Eric Bischoff: Our next guest surely has something to say about the results of last weekend’s tag-team tournament. Joining us now is Jim Cornette, along with his impressive stable of wrestlers, the Heavenly Bodies and Tommy Rich.
Bobby Heenan: His team should be holding the tag-team titles.
Jim Cornette: That’s right, Bobby, It’s not bad enough we have to wrestle in front of these inbreds. I think half the people in these arenas would trip over a cordless phone. But to add insult to injury, we got the tag team titles stolen from us by those do-gooders the Rock and Roll Express. Don’t get too used to those titles, because they’re coming home to the Cornette estate very soon. And this weekend, in Memphis, the capital of the morons, we’re winning the world title. Tommy Rich, a former champion and still at the top of his game, will walk out with the belt Last weekend, we came up short. It’s the last time that happens.
Eric Bischoff: Jim Cornette is focused on leading Tommy Rich to victory this Sunday night in Memphis. Let’s go to the ring for our next match as another newcomer is in action, the all-American Ron Simmons.
Match #2
Ron Simmons defeated Savio Vega via pinfall.
—Commercial Break—
Eric Bischoff: An impressive debut from Ron Simmons in our last segment, he’s another name to keep an eye on this weekend in Memphis as the top talent in the world competes for the heavyweight championship. Let’s welcome to the program the man from Sweetwater, Texas, Barry Windham.
Bobby Heenan: One of the toughest men in the business. He’ll teach these pretty boys a lesson.
Barry Windham: What you are looking at is the proven product. Not some no name up and comer, not some washed up superstar, I am the elite of professional wrestling. It took years to get to this point. Where I know every move my opponent will make, where I am three steps ahead of the game. And it took me too long to realize that you fans are a waste of my time. You can’t appreciate talent, you can’t appreciate greatness. You like to cheer for people like Lawler, like Dirty White Boy. Those cheers mean nothing once we lock up in the ring. You fans may not appreciate my greatness, but after Sunday night in Memphis, you're going to call me world champion.
Eric Bischoff: Barry Windham is ready to add to his title resume this Sunday night. Let’s go to the ring for our next match as Chris Candido, along with the beautiful Tammy Sytch, takes on Tracy Smothers.
Match #3
Chris Candido defeats Tracy Smothers via pinfall with assistance from interference by Tammy Sytch.
—Commercial Break—
Eric Bischoff: Before our last match, we want to remind all our great fans that we will be in Memphis at the Mid-South Coliseum this Sunday night and then at the Hickory National Guard Armory in North Carolina the following Sunday. We are now joined by two wrestlers who are on cloud nine tonight, they won the tag-team titles last weekend in Louisville. Please welcome the Rock and Roll Express.
Bobby Heenan: Is it too late to get Cornette back out here?
Robert Gibson: Last Sunday night, with the odds stacked against us, we walked out of that arena as world champions. This isn’t the first time we’ve held title gold, but man, this one sure feels good. Knowing all the teams we had to beat, all the great wrestlers from around the world who wanted these belts, we did this for you, all those fans in the arenas, all of you watching at home on tv. We’ll keep fighting and making you proud.
Ricky Morton: Rock and Roll is here to stay, baby! Jim Cornette can come out there and cry and whine all he wants. It don’t change a darn thing. He put his best men forward to try and take these belts, we walked out as champions. Whether it’s in Memphis, or Hickory, or any of the other great towns we’ll be visiting, what happened in Memphis, with us pinning Cornette and his goons, that’s what’s going to keep happening over and over.
Eric Bischoff: The Rock and Roll Express are not intimidated by Cornette and his threats from earlier. Let’s head to the ring for our main event of the evening.
Bobby Heenan: They may know rock and roll music, they sure don’t know common sense.
Match #4
Curt Henning w/ Superstar Bill Dundee battled Jeff Jarrett to a double DQ. Dundee and Henning started a two-on-one attack of Jarrett, leading Jerry Lawler to come to the ring as security struggled to restore order.
Eric Bischoff: It’s mayhem in the ring!
