Major League Wrestling Presents . . .
Airs LIVE on Sunday, January 28, 1990 on:
Announcers: Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse Ventura
Interviewer: “Mean” Gene Okerlund
Ring Announcer: Howard Finkel
Referees: Earl Hebner, Gary DeRusha and Joey Marella
GORILLA MONSOON and JESSE “THE BODY” VENTURA open the show.
They welcome us to this live TV special “BATTLE RIOT ’90!
Tonight, we’ll see some big-time, pay-per-view calibre matches, right here for free on USA Network!
The Ugandan savage Kamala will meet “Cowboy” Scott Casey!
The popular Bushwhackers, Luke and Butch, will meet Rhythm & Blues, Greg Valentine and the Honky Tonk Man!
And speaking of Rhythm & Blues, they have promised to give fans a special performance of their upcoming single “Hunka Hunka Honky Love”!
Brutus Beefcake issues a challenge to either Roddy Piper or Larry Zbyszko to face him tonight. Zbyszko has accepted the challenge, and he’ll square off with Bruti tonight!
Jim Duggan got the attention of the Big Bossman recently, when Duggan attacked Bossman as the Bossman was assaulting his defeated opponent with his nightstick on TV. Duggan then challenged the Bossman to wrestle him tonight!
And then, the big one, the main event, 30 of the top superstars in the world will vie for the MLW Intercontinental title in the over-the-top-rope Battle Riot battle royal!
KAMALA (w/ Slick) beats “COWBOY” SCOTT CASEY. Kamala has a big size and strength advantage here, but that means Casey has the speed advantage, and he uses that early on, taking his shots, and then keeping out of the Ugandan’s reach.
As the match progresses, The Outlaws make their way down to the ring. Casey had an altercation with Bart and Jaggers last week on TV, and they come to ringside and get his attention.
Casey jaws with the Outlaws, and Kamala takes advantage, attacking Casey from behind and pummeling him. Bart and Jaggers yuck it up at ringside as Kamala throws Casey around like a ragdoll! Kamala slams Casey, delivers a big splash, but decides that he’s not finished yet, and heads to the top turnbuckle! Kamala delivers the top-rope splash, and Slick instructs Kamala to cover Casey. Even though he seems confused by the whole thing, Kamala does as he’s told and gets the 1, 2, 3!
Mean Gene Okerlund is in the backstage area with The Million Dollar Man and Virgil. The Million Dollar Man is in a good mood, and when Okerlund asks him about it, he shows Mean Gene the number that he drew for the Battle Riot match . . . number 30!
The Million Dollar Man simply says that everybody has a price for the Million Dollar Man, and when Gene asks what that has to do with the number he drew, Dibiase just laughs, and he and Virgil walk away.
Mean Gene says that the Million Dollar Man will definitely have an advantage in the battle royal, as he will be the last man to enter the match!
VTR: Big Bossman in action, 1-8-90, JIP:
Afterwards, as Slick keeps the referee at bay, Bossman handcuffs Montana to the ropes, and then batters him with his nightstick!
Several officials and enhancement wrestlers try to stop Bossman, but he and Slick send them from the ring!
Hacksaw Jim Duggan hits the ring, 2x4 in hand, and chases Bossman and Slick from the ring!
Duggan checks on Montana as officials free him from the handcuffs.
END VTR
HACKSAW JIM DUGGAN battles THE BIG BOSSMAN (w/ Slick) to a Double Count-out. After brawling in the ring, Duggan and Bossman move to the floor. On the outside, Bossman grabs his nightstick, and hits Duggan with it, but Hacksaw is close enough that he can grab his 2x4!
The two men then batter each other with their respective weapons, as the referee counts to 10, and declares the match a double count-out!
Duggan and the Bossman don’t seem to care, they continue to brawl. Several referees, security personnel and prelim wrestlers are finally able to get them separated, and drag both men to the back!
After things get cleared up around ringside, Honky Tonk Man and Greg Valentine, along with Diamond Dallas Page, make their way to the ring.
Page says that it’s the moment that everyone here in the Boston Garden, and everyone watching at home, has been waiting for . . . the world premiere of “Hunka Hunka Honky Love”!
Just as Honky and Valentine get ready to begin, the Bushwhackers music hits and Luke and Butch head to the ring!
Honky, Valentine and Page are livid! As Honky and Valentine yell at the referee, Page takes the mic and says that this is an outrage, and someone needs to be fired for it!
THE BUSHWHACKERS: LUKE & BUTCH defeat RHYTHM & BLUES: GREG VALENTINE & HONKY TONK MAN (w/ Diamond Dallas Page). The action goes back and forth in this one, with Rhythm & Blues taking every opportunity they get to bend, or outright break, the rules! Despite that, the Bushwhackers gain the upper hand, and around the 12-minute mark, they hit Valentine with the Battering Ram, with Butch then covering Greg for the 1, 2, 3!
Mean Gene Okerlund is backstage with Bobby “the Brain” Heenan and Mr Perfect. Gene says that Perfect is about to draw his number for the Battle Riot battle royal.
Perfect draws his number, and Heenan can’t believe it! Okerlund takes a look . . . and tells us that Mr Perfect has drawn NUMBER ONE!
Heenan says that this isn’t fair, this is obviously a conspiracy by Major League Wrestling and Jack Tunney to try to keep Perfect from winning the Intercontinental title!
Perfect isn’t bothered by it, he says that he’s the perfect wrestler, he’ll be the first man in the ring, and the last one standing at the end of the battle royal!
Heenan calms down, and says that’s right, none of the other 29 wrestlers in the match are even in the same league as Perfect!
Back at the announce table, Jesse Ventura says that Heenan is right, this is obviously a conspiracy against the Heenan Family, and the Brain needs to get his lawyers on this ASAP!
Gorilla says that Mr Perfect talks a big game, but now it’s time for him to put up or shut up! He has to last the entire match if he wants to win the Intercontinental title!
VTR: The Barber Shop, 1-8-90:
Brutus Beefcake welcomes us to another edition of The Barber Shop! He starts to introduce his guests this week, but there’s some commotion . . .
“Rowdy” Roddy Piper and Larry Zbyszko walk out onto the set!
Piper takes a look around, and then says that this whole thing is just a cheap rip-off of his Piper’s Pit! The only difference is, Brutus Beefcake will never be in the same league as the Hot Rod!
Piper and Zbyszko then start trashing the set!!!
Brutus grabs Piper, and Roddy sucker punches him! Roddy and Larry then put the boots to Brutus! The scheduled guests, the Killer Bees, arrive on the scene, but Piper and Zbyszko fight them off.
Finally, referees, security personnel and severy wrestlers show up and drag Piper and Zbyszko away.
END VTR
BRUTUS “THE BARBER” BEEFCAKE beats LARRY ZBYSZKO (w/ Roddy Piper) by Disqualification. Larry taunts Brutus and insults him before the bell, but then leaves the ring every time Brutus tries to lock up with him to start the match!
Finally, Brutus has had enough, and he chases Larry out to the floor. That proves to be a mistake, though, as Piper clobbers Brutus from behind! Zbyszko then whips Brutus into the ringpost before tossing him back in to start the match!
After that attack, Brutus is in a bad way, and Zbyszko enjoys the early advantage. However, Brutus eventually battles back and gains the upper hand.
As we pass the 10-minute mark, Brutus locks Zbyszko in the Sleeperhold, right in the middle of the ring! There’s nowhere for Larry to go, he’s too far to reach the ropes.
Zbyszko is fading fast, but Roddy Piper jumps into the ring and again attacks Brutus from behind! The referee immediately calls for the bell, awarding the match to Brutus by DQ.
Piper and Zbyszko double-team Brutus again, like they did back on January 8 on TV, but this time, Brutus grabs his hedge clippers and scares the heels off!
Gorilla says that nothing was settled here tonight, and he’s sure we’ll see Brutus in the ring with Zbyszko and Piper again.
We go to pre-recorded comments from several of the wrestlers that will take part in the Battle Riot battle royal.
30-MAN BATTLE RIOT MATCH!
WINNER BECOMES THE FIRST INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPION!
Mr Perfect (w/ Bobby Heenan) wins, by pinning Jake “the Snake” Roberts at 62:43.
Roberts had picked Perfect up, and was trying to throw him over the top rope, but Heenan grabbed Jake’s feet from ringside, causing Roberts to fall backwards, with Perfect landing on top of him! Heenan held Jake’s legs down throughout the count, but the referee didn’t see it!
As a result, Mr Perfect becomes the first MLW Intercontinental champion!
