SMOKY MOUNTAIN WRESTLING RECAP May – June 1993
USWA World Heavyweight Championship: Barry Windham
After beating Jerry “The King” Lawler at the Volunteer Slam, May 7th, Windham has left the Horsemen and struck out on his own, defending the title against such stars as the Dirty White Boy, “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert, and Bobby Eaton. Newcomer Jake “The Snake” Roberts made his debut and intentions known when he came out after a Windham title match against Kevin Sullivan and DDT’s the world champion on the arena floor, giving Sullivan the win via countout. Windham has vowed revenge.
USWA World Tag Team Championship: The Rock N’ Roll Express
At Volunteer Slam, Ricky & Robert took the world tag team titles away from The Stud Stable made up of Robert Fuller & Dick Slater. Over the last two months, Ricky & Robert have defended the titles weekly but seem to be in the target of Jim Cornette’s Heavenly Bodies, the current SMW tag team champions. The two teams have battled back and forth in both singles and tag team matches with neither team getting the upper hand. Their fight is not over.
SMW Heavyweight Championship: Brad Armstrong
Armstrong, having lost the match at Volunteer Slam to then current champion “Nature Boy” Buddy Landel, defeated Landel at the end of May. He has since defended the title against Bobby Eaton and Landel. He has managed to hold them off for now but the battle is ongoing. “Hot Stuff” Eddie Gilbert is on his way in for the title as well.
SMW Tag Team Championship: The Heavenly Bodies
The Bodies defeated The Armstrongs for the belts at Volunteer Slam and have defended them in rematches as well as against Brian Armstrong and his brothers in different combinations. Cornette however, has targeted the world tag team champions The Rock N’ Roll Express and the USWA world tag team titles. So while they have such teams as The Armstrongs, The Thrillseekers, and The Eliminators all looking at title shots, The Bodies are heading to the world tag team titles.
SMW Beat The Champ Television Championship: The Tazmaniac
At Volunteer Slam, The Tazmaniac took the television title from “The Wild Eyed Southern Boy” Tracy Smothers after interference from Tim Horner. Since then, Taz (short form) has been fending off challenges like Brian Armstrong, and Tommy Dreamer however Eddie Guerrero has made his debut and looks to be the next one in line for the wild man from Tazmania.
SMW US Junior Championship: Dean Malenko
Malenko defeated Brian Christopher for the title after Volunteer Slam and has defended the belt against Eddie Guerrero, Scott Armstrong, and Chris Jericho. However Chris Candido has made his way back to SMW with his valet/manager Tammy Sytch. He has informed Malenko he wants that belt and you can bet they will clash soon for it.
Other Happenings
Jerry Lawler – Jeff Jarrett
After Jarrett turned on Lawler at Volunteer Slam, giving the USWA World title to Barry Windham, Lawler has asked Jarrett why he would do such a thing. Jarrett explained it is because Lawler wasn’t there to defend Memphis when it mattered. Lawler wasn’t there to defend Jeff’s dad when it mattered. He just came in when it was time to steal the spotlight and for that, Lawler needed to be taught a lesson. Lawler has said Jeff is going to get the beating his daddy should have given him at Summer Blast on July 22nd
“Wild Eyed Southern Boy” Tracy Smothers – “White Lightning” Tim Horner
These two have been fighting for months with Horner costing Smothers his TV title. The two have battled with blood flowing. They have signed a loser leaves SMW at Summer Blast and it will be the final battle.
SMW TV returns next week on June 26th on TNN.
