This week, Tiger Mask III will challenge Jushin Thunder Liger for the AJPW World Junior heavyweight title, after defeating Liger at the Tokyo Dome!
Toshiaki Kawada faces New Japan’s Riki Choshu in what should be a very hard-hitting affair!
And in our feature bout, another All Japan vs New Japan match, Mitsuharu Misawa faces Masahiro Chono in a non-title match!
AJPW WORLD JUNIOR HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP:
JUSHIN THUNDER LIGER (champ) (2nd defense) defeats TIGER MASK III. After the introductions are made, the two men stand nose to nose, staring each other down. There’s a show of respect, as they shake hands, and then the bell sounds and both men get down to business.
We see explosive flurries of offense from both men to start, with the champion getting the upper hand after a series of palm strikes to the face that stun Tiger Mask! Liger then takes him down to the mat, and wisely starts working on the leg of the challenger, looking to take away TM’s high-flying attack!
The next few minutes see Liger keep Tiger Mask on the mat, applying a variety of holds on the leg. Tiger Mask is able to get to the ropes to force Liger to break a leglock, and though he’s favouring the leg, Tiger Mask, as he gets back to his feet, fires off a vicious kick, catching Liger in the midsection! Tiger Mask connects with several more kicks that leave Liger in a bad way! A kick right to the side of the champion’s head puts Liger flat on the mat!
Tiger Mask then works Liger over on the mat, but the champion battles back! He hoists TM up for a suplex, but then drops him straight down into a brainbuster! That gets a 2-count, and Liger keeps on the attack. After the brainbuster, Liger turns his focus to the neck of the challenger, and eventually locks him in a Surfboard, but instead of holding the arms, he pulls back on Tiger Mask’s head! However, with his arms free, Tiger Mask repeatedly hits Liger in the face, finally stunning the champion enough to cause him to release the hold.
With both men back up, the action really picks up, as they exchange their signature kicks, Tiger Mask repeatedly connects with his jumping spin kick, while Liger hits his rolling kick! Both men are stunned, but they keep going! They start slugging it out in the middle of the ring, with Liger again going back to the palm strikes, and that gives him the upper hand.
Both men pull out their high-flying moves, and they fly all over the place! At one point, a dropkick sends Liger tumbling to the floor, and Tiger Mask wastes no time running the ropes, then diving out over the top rope and onto Liger on the floor! Back inside the ring, Tiger Mask keeps up the attack, slamming Liger near the corner, and connecting with the Moonsault! Unfortunately for the challenger, he doesn’t hook the leg, and Liger kicks out at 2.
Liger battles back, and several times, tries to set Tiger Mask up for another brainbuster, but every time, the challenger is able to block it. Liger stuns Tiger Mask with another rolling kick, then sets him up on the top turnbuckle, and connects with a top-rope Frankensteiner! Liger has put many opponents away with that, but somehow, Tiger Mask finds a way to kick out at the very last possible second, shocking the champion!
Liger then hits the Liger Bomb, but again Tiger Mask gets a shoulder up at the last second! Frustration starts to set in for the champion, he slaps the mat several times and holds up three fingers to the ref, but Red Shoes Unno says no, it was only two!
Liger goes for another Liger Bomb, but Tiger Mask is able to use his momentum to cause Liger to fall over backwards, landing with Tiger Mask sitting on his chest! Liger kicks out at 1, but he’s shaken up. Tiger Mask hits his jumping spin kick, and then sends Liger through the ropes and to the floor. Tiger Mask follows him out, and stuns Liger with some vicious chops. Tiger Mask then backs off, before taking a running start towards the champion . . . handspring into a twisting bodypress on the floor!
Tiger Mask isn’t finished, he goes quickly to the top turnbuckle, and attempts a top-rope splash all the way onto Liger on the floor! Luckily for the champion, he’s able to roll out of the way, and the challenger crashes and burns!
Liger throws the challenger back into the ring, and delivers a Powerbomb, before hoisting Tiger Mask up again, and hitting the Liger Bomb! This time, Tiger Mask doesn’t kick out, and Jushin Thunder Liger has successfully retained his World Jr heavyweight title!
TOSHIAKI KAWADA defeats RIKI CHOSHU (NJPW). There’s a feeling out process to start the match, as neither man wants to be the first to make a mistake. Kawada starts thing off, backing Choshu into the corner, where he delivers some absolutely brutal chops, that leave red welts on Choshu’s chest, then Kawada backs off, and delivers a kick to the midsection of Choshu! The veteran is already in trouble in the first few minutes of the match, as Dangerous K just continues the onslaught!
Choshu battles back, hitting some devastating Lariats that leave Kawada flat on his back on the mat. Choshu looks for the Scorpion Lock, but Kawada’s got that well scouted, and immediately drags himself to the ropes.
The match goes back and forth, with both men throwing bombs at the other, but neither man can keep the other down. Late in the match, Choshu has the upper hand, but when he goes for a Lariat, Kawada ducks it, then connects with the Gamegiri! Kawada’s not done yet, he pulls Choshu up, and then drives him into the mat with a Folding Powerbomb for the 1, 2, 3!
After the match, Kawada asks for the house mic.
Toshiaki says that sometimes, you come to a point in your career, when you realize you need a change. He says that he’s the reigning World tag team champion with Akira Taue, and he’s very proud of that. However, he and Taue both feel that is probably the highest they’ll go while in the shadow of Mitsuharu Misawa.
So, after thinking long and hard about it, he and Taue have decided that they will LEAVE the Super Generation Army, and start their own group!
MITSUHARU MISAWA defeats MASAHIRO CHONO (NJPW). On commentary, they talk about how the careers of these two men have followed a similar path. Misawa worked his way up the ranks, and in 1990, he surpassed Jumbo Tsuruta as the new ace, and future of All Japan Pro Wrestling. Chono, who started a few years later than Misawa, was doing the same thing in NJPW before they showed up here in AJPW. Chono had become one of the top names in the promotion, and many feel he was poised to surpass Tatsumi Fujinami as the New Japan ace!
And that brings us to this non-title match between these two young men.
Misawa can’t be pleased about what he heard from Toshiaki Kawada after the last match, and he takes that frustration out on Masahiro Chono early on! Misawa pummels Chono in the early going, but Chono shows his fighting spirit as he keeps battling back!
As the match progresses, Chono slowly turns the tables and gains the upper hand. He keeps Misawa on the mat, wearing him down. He focuses on the knee of Misawa, looking to soften him up for the STF. However, every time he tries to apply the hold, Misawa finds a way to get out of it!
In the end, Misawa catches Chono with a devastating Rolling Elbow, and follows that up with the Tiger Driver for the 1, 2, 3!
Wakabayashi, Takeuchi and Baba wrap things up. They talk about the bombshell announcement from Toshiaki Kawada, that he and Akira Taue will be leaving Misawa’s Super Generation Army, and they wonder how Misawa will respond to this.
