They welcome us to this week’s episode of “All Japan Pro Wrestling”!
This is an historic day for All Japan Pro Wrestling, as we make our debut in the Big Egg, the Tokyo Dome!
This week, we’ll see American superstar Sting face Riki Choshu! Both men use the Scorpion lock, and we’ll see which one is better here today!
The World tag team titles are on the line, as the Miracle Violence Connection, Steve Williams and Terry Gordy, defend the belts against Toshiaki Kawada and Akira Taue!
And, the feature bout, four legends square off, as the All Japan team of Giant Baba and Genichiro Tenryu meet the two biggest stars in the history of New Japan Pro Wrestling, Antonio Inoki and Tatsumi Fujinami!
STING beats RIKI CHOSHU. Choshu tries to keep this as a wrestling match, but Sting would rather brawl, and simply overpowers Choshu. It goes back and forth early on, but as the match progresses, Sting gains the upper hand. After a Stinger Splash in the corner, Sting locks Choshu in the Scorpion Lock in the middle of the ring for the submission victory after about 13 minutes.
After the match, Sting shakes Choshu’s hand, then takes the house mic and addresses the Tokyo Dome in English. He says that he always enjoys himself here in Japan, and he hopes to return again soon!
We see highlights of Steve Williams and Terry Gordy defeating Mitsuharu Misawa and Toshiaki Kawada for the AJPW World tag team titles back on January 30 at Nippon Budokan. Williams shocks everyone in attendance when he hits the Triple Crown champ Misawa with the Doctor Bomb and pins him to win the titles!
The announcers talk about how losing those titles, with Misawa getting pinned, and then Kawada feeling like Misawa is too busy with the Triple Crown to focus on their team, seems to have caused somewhat of a rift between the two. Now, Kawada has teamed up with former rival Akira Taue and they’ll challenge the gaijins for the titles!
WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP:
TOSHIAKI KAWADA & AKIRA TAUE (challengers) defeat THE MIRACLE VIOLENCE CONNECTION: “DR. DEATH” STEVE WILLIAMS & TERRY “BAMM BAMM” GORDY (champions) to win the titles. On commentary, the announcers discuss the fact that Kawada and Taue are a new team, they’ve teamed several times lately, mostly on non-televised shows.
Kawada and Taue seem to gel as a team very quickly, and they give the champions all they can handle early on. The MVC slow things down, by working over Taue on the mat, with Kawada having to come in several times to help out his partner. After Taue takes a lot of abuse, he’s finally able to make the hot tag, with Kawada coming in and cleaning house!
The battle then moves to the floor, where the champions gain the advantage after Doc drops Kawada throat-first on the guardrail! The champions throw Kawada back in, and now the roles are reversed, as it’s Kawada in trouble, and Taue having to come in to help his partner.
The fans are clearly behind the challengers, as Doc and Gordy seem to grow more and more cocky as the match progresses, and they believe they have things well in hand.
The challengers turn the tables, though, as they isolate Gordy in their half of the ring, and take turns pummeling him! Williams comes in to help out, and we get all four men brawling in the ring!
As the referee gets things back under control, Gordy tags out to Williams, and he trades bombs with Kawada, as they hit each other with everything they’ve got! Kawada stuns Williams with an enziguri, and tags in Taue. Taue chops the hell out of Doc, and then delivers the Nodowa Otoshi for the 1, 2, 3!!!
Kawada and Taue are the new World tag team champions!
We see a video hyping Keiji Mutoh’s return to the Tokyo Dome, where he’ll challenge Mitsuharu Misawa for the Triple Crown. We see clips of Mutoh wrestling both as himself, and his demonic alter-ego, the Great Muta! It’s noted that the demonic side will come out at the Tokyo Dome, as it will be the Great Muta facing Misawa!
FOUR KINGS SPECIAL CLIMAX:
GIANT BABA & GENICHIRO TENRYU defeat ANTONIO INOKI & TATSUMI FUJINAMI. This is definitely a “dream match”, as these four are probably the biggest names of the past 20 years in Japan. Baba and Inoki were once a great tag team, but after going their separate ways and starting their own promotions, there paths didn’t cross again until now!
About 15 minutes of the match is shown on TV.
The two teams shake hands as a show of respect to start the match, and then get down to business. The momentum goes back and forth early, and the crowd goes absolutely nuts when Tenryu, who had been taking some punishment from Inoki, tags out to Giant Baba!
The two legends stand face to face, and then tear into each other! Baba isn’t physically able to do a whole lot at this point, but just seeing him battling Inoki has the Tokyo Dome fans on their feet!
The end comes when Tenryu hits Inoki with an enziguri, and then drives Inoki into the mat with a Folding Powerbomb for the 1, 2, 3!
Wakabayashi and Takeuchi wrap things up, and hype next week’s show, which will feature three more matches from the May 3 Tokyo Dome show, including the big one, as the Great Muta returns to the Tokyo Dome, looking to take the Triple Crown from Mitsuharu Misawa!
