10/9/96 - West Virginia University Coliseum, Morgantown, VA
"Mean" Gener Okerlund and "The Genius" Lanny Poffo welcome us to the West Virginia Universiry Coliseum in Morgantown, Virginia for another exciting edition of Eastern Championship Wrestling! After touring the Northern and Western U.S. States for the greater part of this year, Lanny is happy to be back home on the East Coast. They then talk a bit about last week's show which saw "The Soul Stealer" Papa Shango in a rage after Brimstone's betrayal at September to Remember, William Regal get attacked by the Mexi-Kings and their newest member Eddie Guerrero; and Chris Jericho make his presence known after Arn Anderson's match that he plans on defeating the ECW Champ at Wrestle Annual III!
Okerlund says that'll be one tall order for "The Long Island Loud-Mouth" who will be facing former ECW Champion "Mr. Wrestling" Steve Corino in tonight's Main Event! They then hype the rest of tonight's huge card which will see the Eastern States Champion Chris Benoit in action as well as the ECW in-ring debut of Eddie Guerrero!
Joel Gertner then makes with the intros for the first match of the night.
Match: Tully Blanchard & Scott Taylor vs. The Texas Hangmen (Barr & Bart)
Referee: Danny Davis
The Texas Hangmen hold their own and have a good back and forth brawl with Tully Blanchard and Scott Taylor that sees Black Bart hit the Texas Trash Compactor diving legdrop on Taylor for the two count. In the end however Tully and Taylor get Jesse Barr alone in the ring where Blanchard connects with a slingshot suplex before Scott Taylor comes off the top with the diving high angle Chop Drop that gets him the pinfall.

We're then taken back stage where Eddie Guerrero and the Mexi-Kings are having a laugh at Regal's expense in Spanglish. Homicide gets a little over enthusiastic and Guerrero asks him what the hell he has to be proud about? That him and Hernandez go way back holmes. They cut their teeth. But Homicide? He let Regal disrespect them like a punk. He didn't defend their honor esse. He didn't earn Eddie's respect. Which is why this Saturday on Weekend Warriors his punk ass had better take care of Regal for good. Comprende?
Match: Eddie Guerrero vs. Taka Michinoku
Referee: S.D. Jones
Taka Michinoku makes his return to an ECW ring in this one and gives Eddie Guerrero more than he bargained for in his debut match. Both men look impressive as they exchange several hurrancanranas and Taka hits several impressive kicks, a springboard moonsault; and the Michinoku Driver. "Latino Heat" brings the fight right back to him however with a Tornado DDT, an Hilo slingshot somersault senton; and a suicide dive to the outside that wipes Michinoku out against the steel barricade! From there he rolls Taka back into the ring before scaling the top turnbuckle from the outside and hits the Frog Splash for the win. After the match he celebrates with the Mexi-Kings who were out at ringside during the match.

Match: Yoshihiro Tajiri w/ Mr. Fuji vs. Cousin Jamie w/ Doug Gilbert
Referee: Danny Davis
With his manager Mr. Fuji at ringside "The Japanese Buzzsaw" Yoshihiro Tajiri in on fire as he pulls out all the stops against Cousin Jamie, hitting the handspring back elbow, the springboard hurrancanrana off the top rope; and even locking the Bayou Boy in the dreaded and illegal Tarantula hold! Cousin Jamie is no slouch of course and gives as good as he gets using both a German Suplex and a Northern Lights Suplex before trying to get "The Buzzsaw" to submit with the Trailer Hitch modified figure four! Doug Gilbert on the outside looks to sway the advantage, but Mr. Fuji is one step ahead of him throwing salt into the eyes of "The Redneck Rebel" at ringside! This distracts Jamie enough to let Tajiri captializ with several kicks before going for the Shining Wizard! Jamie has the presence of mind to duck it however and as Yoshihiro wipes out; Jamie charges across the ring and connects with one of his own! He hooks the leg but only gets a two count?
Just then however the lights go out! Smoke fills the arena and voodoo drums begin to pound and when the lights come back on The Dark Circle is inside the ring handing Jamie and Tajiri a beating and a half! Rhino and Mongo then pick the two lightweights up and throw them out of the ring while their boss "The Soul Stealer" Papa Shango gets on the mic and freaks the hell out! He is fuming and rambling. Where is Brimstone?! Where is he?! He throws his top hat on the ground and begins stomping on it and calling it by Brimstone's name! He wants his head on a pike! He wants to feast on his entrails! He wants to wear his skin as a jacket! He wants him here! And he ain't leaving this ring until he has his cold dead hands wrapped around his throat!
Shango is breathing heavy but nobody comes.
But suddenly Brimstone appears on the ramp! He says he's glad he got Shango's attention. That when he arrived within the Dark Circle it was at it's very pinnacle. But over the past year it has been on a strady decline. And the blame for that "The Dark Prophet" lays at the feet of the man who failed to destroy Ric Flair. Who failed to capture the ECW Championship from "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson. And the name of that failure is... Papa Shango!
Shango goes crazy and begins shaking the ropes while shouting at Brimstone who tells "The Soul Stealer" he isn't the only one who sees it. That his friends do as well. Papa Shango stops short and looks at the ramp where Brimstone's "friends" should be. He makes a crazy motion with his finger. He tells Brimstone that he is crazier than "The Dark One" gave him credit. Because no one would stand by Brimston'e side and face the judgment to come! That his only allies lay within his own mind!
Just then however Shango is attacked! By Pogo the Clown and Luna! They begin beating him down while Matt Borne, Barry Windham; and Destruction Inc. look on stunned! Brimstone meanwhile charges down the ramp, slides into the ring; and joins in the brawl! Recovering their senses Windham, Vyle; and Rhino come to Shango's aide and the Dark Circle continues to explode as ECW goes to...

"Mean" Gene and Lanny welcome us back from the break before reminding us that next week's show will be coming to us live from the Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Virginia and that while tickets for the show are sold out; those folks at home can tune in right here on Eastern Championship's home station of TNN The Nashville Network to catch all the action live! They also remind us to be sure and tune in this Saturday morning for ECW Slammin' Saturdays and Saturday night for Weekend Warriors!
Match: Chris Benoit w/ Ted DiBiase vs. Devon Hughes w/ Spike Hughes
Referee: S.D. Jones
Big Devon Hughes ain't scared of the Eastern States Champ and takes the fight right to "The Canadian Crippler" Chris Benoit! He explodes on him with a flurry of offense including a double dose of 360 degree corkscrew back elbow smashes that sets Benoit up for a spinebuster and a two count! Devon keeps at it, but Chris slows him down with a knee to the guy which he follows up with another before flattening Hughes with a powerbomb! It only gets him a two count; but it's enough to shift momentum "The Crippler's" way and he ends up hitting three consecutive German Suplexes on Devon for the three. He isn't finished however and heads up top making the throat slashing motion that signals the flying headbutt off the top!
Little Spike Hughes shows some guts however as he gets into the ring shielding Devon with himself as he begs Chris off. But undeterred Benoit goes airborne anyway cracking skulls with Spike instead as he sends him sprawling like a bowling pin. Chris gets up to one knee looking rather pleased with himself as blood trickles down from his forehead. Just then however...
Ron Simmons who pushes Ted DiBiase aside as he launches into the ring attacks Benoit! He hammers on his open wound before whipping him into the ropes and flattens him with a big boot! He's yelling at Benoit "That's why not!" as ECW goes to...
COMMERCIAL BREAK
ECW Correspondent Terri Runnels catches up to Ron Simmons after the attack. He says that he wasn't looking for a fight, but after putting hi hands on the former XPW Heavyweight Champ; "The Canadian Crippler" Chris Benoit sure as hell got one. And he's not leaving it at that Terri. Because Ron is going to teach Benoit a damn lesson when he takes the Eastern States Championship too!
Tag-Team Match. Destruction Inc. vs. The Wiseguys (Cicero & Falcone)
Referee: Danny Davis
While the Wiseguys get some offence in here, Destruction Inc. make short work of the duo; hitting the Utter Destruction flapjack/cutter combo on Jimmy Cicero for the win. After the match there's static on the big screen and when it clears...
Tag-Team Champions Dustin Rhodes and Tommy Dreamer with Beulah McGillicutty are in front of the ECW Banner talking to Terri Runnels about Destruction Inc. who they have a message for. They aren't ducking them. They've never ducked anyone in their lives and if Mongo Vyle and Rhino want their shot at the Titles? Well they hope they're ready. Because they've got them. Next week! Mongo Vyle and Rhino look plenty pleased by this news.
COMMERCIAL BREAK
Back from break we're taken to a video at the home of "Macho Man" Randy Savage? He's out by the pool sunbathing while Debbie Combs rubs lotion on him. He sees the camera and says that he appreciates all the "Get Well" cards and gifts he's received from the fans over the past week. But the "Macho Man" needs a break. Yeah. But that doesn't mean Chris Benoit should get comfortable with his Title! Oooooh no! Cause Randy Savage will be back sooner than you think and when he returns; for a certain "Canadian Crippler" there'll be hell to pay! Oooooh Yeah! He then informs Debbie she missed a spot.
Match: Dean Malenko w/ David Prazak vs. Aryan von Raschke w/ The Baron & The Blitzkrieg
Referee: S.D. Jones
The ECW Light Heavyweight Champ "Lone Wolf" Dean Malenko faces a stiff challenge here in two time Lightweight Champ Aryan von Raschke; especially with the constant interference of the Baron and the intimidating presence of The Blitzkrieg weighed in. Aryan is no slouch and has his moments, getting a two count off a corner sitout powerbomb and another with the jumping DDT. But Malenko keeps on coming and dominates Aryan here and there before Von Raschke gets the drop on him and takes his head off with the Sieg Heil! superkick! Almost, because Dean Malenko dodges it, grabs his leg pulling Aryan off his feet and locks him into the Texas Cloverleaf! Aryan taps giving Dean the win. The second he does however The Blitzkrieg and the Baron are up on the apron! Luckily Dean is smart enough to roll out the other side and Title still in hand heads up the ramp with David Prazak.
COMMERCIAL BREAK
Okerlund and Poffo welcome us back from the last commercial break of the evening. They talk about the recently returned "Long Island Loud-Mouth" Chris Jericho who at September to Remember two weeks ago earned a shot at the ECW Championship at Wrestle Annual III! They talk about his almost year long reign with the Inter-Promotional Title as well as his WCW Television Title reign. He may be facing the greatest challenge of his career however in "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson! The segues into the discussion of his opponent this evening "Mr. Wrestling" Steve Corino who is the youngest World Heavyweight Champion in the history of this sport? The man he beat for the belt? Arn Anderson.
Gertner: The following contest is scheduled for one fall. Introducing first from Sea Isley City, New Jersey weighing 242 lbs. and accompanied to the ring by Jason Venom; he is "Mr. Wrestling" Steve Corino!
To the surprise of Gene Corino actually gets some cheers from the New Jersey crowd! Further proof to Lanny that the state is a cesspool. Just then "Thunderkiss '65" by White Zombie hits! And out from the back explodes...
Gertner: And introducing his opponent this evening from Manhasset, New York weighing in at 226 lbs.; he is "The Long Island Loud-Mouth" Chris Jericho!
Match: Chris Jericho vs. Steve Corino w/ Jason Venom
Referee: Danny Davis
Okerlund dubs this one "The Battle of the Egos." Indeed each man seems to want the early advantage as there are several false starts. Finally they do indeed lock up and have a contest of strength! That goes nowhere as they are two evenly matched. Chris is the first to break it and sweeps Corino's legs, but he sees it coming and hopping over it grabs Jericho's arm for an armdrag! But Chris blocks it counters with a hammerlock! He then forces Steve into the ropes and goes for a roll-up; but it quickly gets blocked by "Mr. Wrestling" who connects with a mule kick. Freeing himself with several back elbows, Steve grabs Chris by the head and bulldog! Jericho however puts the breaks on it and throws Steve across the ring into the ropes and pops up for a jumping corkscrew roundhouse kick! And Corino is down! Chris runs the ropes..
Springboard moonsault! Right into the knees of Corino! And Steve is right back up and climbing over Chris locks in a Camel Clutch! Jericho attempts to fight his way up, but Steve keeps jumping on his back! "The Loud-Mouth" ain't a horse! And he proves it by fighting his way up to his feet dragging Steve up onto his shoulder! Electric Chair Drop! And chris bridges with a cover! 1!... 2!...
Corino kicks out! Chris keeps right on him with clubbing forearms! Steve retreats back into the corner while Jericho fires off with several kicks! Steve is out of it and Chris charges back across the ring and goes for a leaping elbow smash! But Corino dodges it allowing Chris to crash into the corner! And as he hobbles out "Mr. Wrestling" lets him have it with a scoop powerslam pin! 1!... 2!... Jericho has the shoulder up! Steve grabs him and slams him back down to the canvas! Another pin! Barely a two! Jericho now has hold of "Mr. Wrestling's" arm and is up on one knee with a wrench! Steve is trying to free himself with several punches but Chris is up on his feet and he's torturing Corino with another wrench! He kicks the arm and then kicks it again! He then pulls Steve in for a suplex!
But Corino counters with a snapmare takedown! And a dropkick to the back of the head! He lands on the bad arm, but is back up first. He grabs a headlock with the good arm and starts to work on Chris' neck. Jericho is stomping the canvas and inches towards the ropes! He gets his leg up on the bottom rope! But Jason Venom grabs it and throws it back down! Corino begins elbowing "The Long Island Loud-Mouth" with the bad arm now while Chris throws his leg on the bottom rope again. And again Venom throws it off! Corino is really working on Chris' neck but he gets his foot on the rope a third time and when Jason goes to grab it he's close enough to kick him in the face!
The ref forces the break, but Corino captures Jericho in a headlock again the second he gets up! He goes for a neckbreaker, but Chris put the hault on it and swinging around throws Steve down to the mat by his bad arm! Arm drag! Steve grabs his shoulder and hobbles up to the corner while Chris stretches his neck! He then charges at Corino! Dropkick to the corner! Steve doesn't go down and Chris begins lighting him up with chops! He then grabs Steve by the head and hits the bulldog! The fans are a mixture of cheers and boos as Chris looks around before running the ropes! This time the springboard moonsault connects! And he hooks the leg! 1!... 2!... 3! Chris Jericho has won it! He gets his arm raised in victory as the fans begin to cheer! A little too loudly! He looks toward the ramp and there stands the Eastern Heavyweight Champion "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson!
He claps his hands before getting on the microphone. He congratulates Chris on his win here tonight. However "The Enforcer" doesn't care who he faces at Wrestle Annual III. Because he promises not only will he be the Champion going in, but also going out! You can bet on that.
Lights Fade.
