The Jr Heavyweight top contender league has finished. Ultimo Dragon finished in first place, with 14 points, but Jushin Thunder Liger and Tiger Mask III each finished the tournament with 12 points, so they’ll meet in a tie-breaker today, with the winner going on to wrestle Ultimo Dragon in the finals next week in Osaka!
(Promoter’s note: most of the matches took place at untelevised stops on the tour, but I only posted the ones that aired on TV)
A graphic appears on the screen, showing the final standings:
Ultimo Dragon (14 points)
Jushin Thunder Liger (12 points)
Tiger Mask III (12 points)
Dr Wagner Jr (10 points)
Atlantis (10 points)
Shinjiro Otani (6 points)
Mighty Inoue (4 points)
The Eagle (2 points)
Yoshinari Ogawa (2 points)
SCOTT NORTON & JOHNNY ACE defeat THE FANTASTICS: BOBBY & JACKIE FULTON. The smaller Fulton brothers have to use their speed to their advantage, and not let Ace or Norton get them into their corner. That strategy works early on, but as the match progresses, Ace and Norton eventually start to wear the Fantastics down, causing Bobby and Jackie to slow down.
From there, Norton and Ace pummel them, with Norton getting the win after hitting Jackie with a devastating Lariat and covering him for the 1, 2, 3!
Wakabayashi and Takeuchi talk about another match that will take place on next week’s program from Osaka . . . a match between the team we just saw, Norton and Ace, and the Miracle Violence Connection of Terry “Bamm Bamm” Gordy and “Dr. Death” Steve Williams! The match will determine the #1 contenders to the World tag team titles.
An ad airs for the January 30 card at Nippon Budokan. On that show, the winner of the Norton and Ace vs Miracle Violence Connection will challenge Misawa and Kawada for the World tag team titles! The winner of the Jr Heavyweight top contender league will challenge Masanobu Fuchi for the World Jr Heavyweight title! And we’ll see the final match of Jun Akiyama’s 5-match trial series!
JR HEAVYWEIGHT TOP CONTENDER LEAGUE
SEMI FINAL:
JUSHIN THUNDER LIGER defeats TIGER MASK III. We saw footage on last week’s program, of what happened after the last league match between these two. Liger won, and offered his hand as a show of respect for his young opponent. However Tiger Mask seemed to let his frustration over losing get the better of him, and he slapped Liger’s hand away. Fans were shocked, as throughout the history of the Tiger Mask character, he’s always been a good, upstanding competitor, never showing disrespect to his opponents like that.
We’re treated to another fantastic match between these two. They wrestle at a lightning-quick pace for the entire match! In the end, Liger connects with his Liger Bomb for the 1, 2, 3!
Once again Liger has defeated Tiger Mask, although the young man has absolutely nothing to be ashamed of, he gave Liger all he could handle!
Liger again offers his hand to Tiger Mask. Tiger Mask hesitates for a moment . . . and then shakes Liger’s hand! Tiger Mask then raises Liger’s arm, and claps for him as he’s leaving the ring.
GENICHIRO TENRYU & AKIRA TAUE defeat TOSHIAKI KAWADA & TSUYOSHI KIKUCHI. The rivalry between Tsuruta-Gun and the Super Generation Army continues this week. Tenryu and Kawada are the stars of their respective teams, with Taue and Kikuchi in a “little brother” type role. Whenever Tenryu is in the ring with Kikuchi, Tenryu usually has the upper hand, and the same is true when Kawada is in against Taue.
Things really pick up when Tenryu and Kawada are in the ring against each other. Tenryu is a tough bastard, but he even he has trouble withstanding Dangerous K’s kicks and strikes! Late in the match, Tenryu hits Kawada with an enziguri, but Kawada responds right back with one of his own!
In the end, the Tsuruta-Gun team gets the win, when Taue slams Kikuchi to the mat with the Nodowa Otoshi, and covers him for the 1, 2, 3!
THE MIRACLE VIOLENCE CONNECTION: TERRY “BAMM BAMM” GORDY & “DR. DEATH” STEVE WILLIAMS defeat MITSUHARU MISAWA & KENTA KOBASHI. This nearly 30 minute match is edited down for TV. This hasn’t been a good night for the Super Generation Army, first Kawada and Kikuchi go down in defeat to Tenryu and Taue, and now Misawa and Kobashi fall to the Miracle Violence Connection!
This is a good, hard-hitting match, that sees plenty of offence from both teams. However, in the end, Kobashi is in the ring Gordy, and the brawling style of the big American is just too much for Kobashi to overcome. While Williams battles Misawa on the floor, stopping him from getting back into the ring, Gordy pummels Kobashi, then drives him into the mat with a Powerbomb for the 1, 2, 3!
Wakabayashi and Takeuchi wrap things up, and hype next week’s show. On that show, we’ll see Norton and Ace take on Gordy and Williams for a shot at the World tag titles, and the main event will see Jushin Thunder Liger and Ultimo Dragon square off in the final of the Jr Heavyweight Top Contender league!
