They welcome us to the first episode of the new year! Things have been heating up in All Japan Pro Wrestling, and they’re only going to get hotter in 1993!
The “New Year Giant Series” will kick off the year in a big way, with some exciting things happening!
Jun Akiyama, who fans have started referring to as “the super rookie”, will take part in a 5-match trial series! The first of the five matches will take place right here tonight, as Akiyama squares off with American star “Dr. Death” Steve Williams!
As well, nine of the top junior heavyweight stars in the world will compete in a tournament to determine the top contender to Masanobu Fuchi’s World Jr Heavyweight title!
We see a graphic, showing the wrestlers that will take part in the league:
Jushin Thunder Liger!
Ultimo Dragon!
Tiger Mask III!
Dr Wagner Jr!
Atlantis!
Shinjiro Otani!
Former champion Mighty Inoue!
The Eagle!
Yoshinari Ogawa!
JR HEAVYWEIGHT TOP CONTENDER LEAGUE:
DR WAGNER JR [2] defeats MIGHTY INOUE [0]. The rudo from Mexico picks up his first 2 points of the league, by pinning the former Jr Heavyweight champ Inoue after a Senton off the top rope.
JR HEAVYWEIGHT TOP CONTENDER LEAGUE:
TIGER MASK III [2] defeats YOSHINARI OGAWA [0]. Two young wrestlers square off next, with the masked man getting the win, after hitting Ogawa with the Tiger Driver for the 1, 2, 3!
We go to pre-recorded comments from rookie Jun Akiyama, sitting in the locker room. Akiyama is humble, and knows he’s got a huge obstacle ahead of him tonight in “Dr. Death” Steve Williams! He says that all he can do is go out there and do his best, and he hopes the fans will support him in the match.
JR HEAVYWEIGHT TOP CONTENDER LEAGUE:
ATLANTIS [2] defeats THE EAGLE [0]. Atlantis gets the win, using his favourite hold, La Atlántida, to get the submission victory!
JUN AKIYAMA 5-MATCH TRIAL SERIES, MATCH #1:
“DR DEATH” STEVE WILLIAMS defeats JUN AKIYAMA. Akiyama may be new to the sport, but he’s taken to it very quickly, and puts up a fight early on against Williams! Doc simply overpowers Jun as the match progresses though, and eventually gets the win with the Oklahoma Stampede.
JR HEAVYWEIGHT TOP CONTENDER LEAGUE:
ULTIMO DRAGON [2] defeats JUSHIN THUNDER LIGHER [0]. Our semi main event features two of the very best Jr heavyweight wrestlers in the world today, and most fans expect one of these two men to win this league! The match lasts about 16 minutes, although it’s edited down a little bit for TV.
The action is fast and furious, as both men throw everything they’ve got at the other. Dragon connects with his famed Asai Moonsault, but Liger manages to get a shoulder up at the last second!
Dragon, realizing that he’ll need even more to put Liger down, drives Liger into the mat, right on the back of his head, with a picture-perfect Dragon Suplex!
This time, Liger doesn’t kick out, and Ultimo Dragon has just picked up one of the biggest wins of his career!
Dragon helps Liger up, and the two men shake hands afterwards, with Liger raising Dragon’s arm.
We see highlights of the Jr Heavyweight League matches that took place between January 2 when this show was taped, and it’s airdate on January 7.
On January 3, a second night at Korakuen Hall saw Shinjiro Otani pin The Eagle, Ultimo Dragon pin Dr Wagner Jr and Jushin Thunder Liger beat Yoshinari Ogawa.
January 5, AJPW was in Ehime, at the Ehime Resident Hall. On that night, Shinjiro Otani beat Yoshinari Ogawa, Tiger Mask III beat Ultimo Dragon in what has to be considered a BIG upset, and Jushin Thunder Liger beat Mighty Inoue.
MITSUHARU MISAWA & TOSHIAKI KAWADA defeat SCOTT NORTON & JOHNNY ACE. Norton is absolutely vicious here, pummeling Misawa and Kawada every chance he gets! The World tag champs find themselves on the defensive in the early going, but when Ace tags in, Misawa and Kawada are able to turn things around.
The momentum goes back and forth throughout the match, but in the end, Misawa and Kawada get the win. Kawada stuns Ace with a vicious kick to the head, then tags in Misawa, who comes off the top rope with a Diving Body Press for the 1, 2, 3!
Misawa and Kawada won the Real World Tag League in December, and their hot streak continues here tonight, beating the double-tough duo of Scott Norton and Johnny Ace!
Wakabayashi and Takeuchi wrap things up, and hype next week’s show.
