10/2/96 - Huntington Civic Center Huntington, WV
"Mean" Gene Okerlund and "The Genius" Lanny Poffo welcome us to Huntington Civic Center in Huntington, West Virginia for another exciting edition of Easter Championship Wrestling! They talk about last week's show, ECW's huge big event September to Remember where "The Canadian Crippler" Chris Benoit defeated "Macho Man" Randy Savage for the Eastern States Title, "The Long Island" Loud-Mouth Chris Jericho earned a shot at the ECW Championship at Wrestle Annual III; and "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson retained his Title against the villanous "Soul Stealer" Papa Shango! But what possibly is on the minds of everyone is what happened after the Main Event; when "The Dark Prophet" Brimstone came down to the ring and delivered a monstrous Chokeslam from Hell on Shango! Obviously all is not well within the ranks of the Dark Circle and they're sure we'll hear more on that situation here tonight.
Indeed they're right because as if on cue the lights go out in the arena, smoke seeps in; and voodoo drums begin to pound announcing the arrival of "The Soul Stealer!" Papa Shango has his cohorts in the Dark Circle with him, but Brimstone is noticeably absent. Inside the ring Shango is all fired up as he theatrically tells us of betrayal, murder; and deception! How the man known as Brimstone deceived the cabal, easing his way in claiming to serve the Dark Lord! How he was taken in the cold embrace of the circle, serving them well only to betray them last week when he murderered "The Soul Stealer's" chance at once more restoring the Eastern Heavyweight Title where it so rightfully belongs! Within the cold, murderous hands of Papa Shango! And that's exactly what Shango has on his mind here tonight. Murder. But make no mistake brother Brimstone; it isn't going to come easy. It's going to be a hard, arduous affair. One that only ends when your flesh is rended from bone! Where you howl in eternal pain! And you know what it means to be avenged on the altar of the Dark One! He lets out his chilling war cry as ECW goes to...
COMMERCIAL BREAK
Joel Gertner makes the intros for the first match of the night.
Match: Papa Shango vs. Prince Nana Osei Bandoh
Referee: S.D. Jones
Prince Nana Osei Bandoh makes the mistake that Papa Shango was here to wrestle tonight. Mercifully it doesn't last long as "The Soul Stealer" tears into the Ghanan Prince; tearing him apart before putting him down for the count with Voodoo inverted shoulder breaker. After the match he has the members of Destruction Inc. hold Bandoh up and he begins chanting some weird incantations (according to Lanny) or another. And proceeds to blow a fireball into the face of Prince Nana! He begins screaming and falls down to the mat writhing in pain while the Dark Circle stand triumphant over him with Shango letting out another war cry.
COMMERCIAL BREAK
The announcer's recap how Prince Nana was removed from the arena by paramedics and is said to be in stable condition, though he suffered some burns in the vicious attack by Papa Shango. They then talk about the condition of former Eastern States Champion "Macho Man" Randy Savage who will be taking a couple weeks off following two grueling battles in the past weeks first with Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat and then with "The Canadian Crippler" Chris Benoit last week at September to Remember; a match that cost him the Eastern States Title.
Match: Brian Christopher vs. Chris Harris
Referee: Danny Davis
"Too Cool" Brian Christopher dances his way down to the ring accompanied by "Miss Texas" Jacqueline Moore before have a nice back and forth contest with the young rookie Chris Harris whom he beats with the Hip Hop guilltione legDrop.
COMMERCIAL BREAK
Back from break ECW Correspondent Terri Runnels is standing by with David Prazak and ECW Light Heavyweight Champ "The Lone Wolf" Dean Malenko who has the Title draped over his shoulder. Prazak does most the talking and tells us that his client is set to be the longest reigning Champion in this company. He says that the talent in this company is phenomenal; but nobody in this sport can match the skill, the athleticism; or the in-ring know how of the Light Heavyweight Champ.
Match: Dean Malenko w/ David Prazak vs. Erin O'Grady
Referee: S.D. Jones
"The Leprechaun" Erin O'Grady tosses his gold coins to the fans as he heads down to ringside. Inside the ring he gives Dean Malenko a tough fight, landing the double foot stomp off the top and gets a two count with his patented Lucky Charm double underhook implant DDT. "The Lone Wolf" gives better than he gets however and makes his opponent submit via the Texas Cloverleaf.
After th match we're taken backstage to the locker room where "Ravishing" Rick Rude and "Mr. Wednesday Night" Rob Van Dam are talking when Ron Simmons arrives looking rather pissed as he opens his locker and slams his gym bag into it. Rob approaches him and asks him "you mad bro?" Simmons just shoots him a look before slamming the locker closed and storms off. They look after him. "Damn" Rude shrugs before returning to their conversation.
COMMERCIAL BREAK
"Mean" Gene and Lanny welcome us back before remind us that next week Eastern Championship will be coming to us live from the West Virginia University Coliseum in Morgantown, West Virginia! While tickets for that show are sold out, those folks at home should be sure to join us right here on ECW's home station; TNN The Nashville Network! They also remind us to check out Slammin' Saturdays and Weekend Warriors for more amazing ECW action!
Match: William Regal vs. Doug Gilbert w/ Cousin Jamie
Referee: Danny Davis
"The Redneck Rebel" Doug Gilbert holds his own early on in this one while the announcers talk about Regal's loss to Chris Jericho as September to Remember thanks in part to a handful of tights. Gilbert tries the same trick after rolling the man from Blackpool up, but neither that or an attempted assist by Cousin Jamie can swing Dougie the win and he takes the loss via a Regal-Plex bridging leghook belly to back suplex.
After the match Regal asks for the mic from Joel Gertner and tells the audience that he isn't going to cry out here tonight. That sure Chris Jericho took the cheap way out last week to earn a shot at the Eastern Heavyweight Championship; but he had to. Because quite frankly there's no other way "The Loud-Mouth" can beat His Lordship. But there'll be another day and another Title opportunity. And when that auspicious occasion arises William Regal will walk away the ECW Champion!
Just then however "Insane in the Brain" by Cyrpress Hill hits?! And out from the back come the Mexi-Kings! Regal is ready for a fight as Homicide and Hernandez head down to the ring when suddenly he's attacked from behind!
It's Eddie Guerrerro! He has a mic in his hand which he proceeds to beat over Regal's head as the Mexi-Kings storm the ring and the stomp William out! Eddie tosses his hair back as he gets on the mic and tells us that this limey gringo had it coming esse! That several weeks ago he was sitting at home seeing his boy Hernandez in action when Regal disrespected him by pulling our the brass knucks! That's not cool holmes! And now "Latino Heat" is on the scene and is gonna make him pay!
COMMERCIAL BREAK
The announcers hype Eddie Guerrero's arrival in ECW, putting him over as one of the best performers in the sport today; and while Gene can't condone his actions here tonight; he's excited to see him in action here at Eastern Championship!
Match: Ron Simmons vs. Douglas Williams
Referee: S.D. Jones
Ron Simmons is looking just as fired up here as he did earlier backstage. This doesn't bode well for the young "U.K. Kidd" Douglas Williams who gives him a fight; but ends up getting pounded into the canvas for a three count with a snap scoop powerslam by Simmons.
COMMERCIAL BREAK
Tag-Team Match: Destruction Inc. vs. The Hughes Brothers
Referee: Danny Davis
Destruction Inc. comes down to the ring alone while the announcers once again talk about the dissent within the ranks of the Dark Circle as well as how well the Hughes Brothers worked with Destruction Inc. in their match against The Steiners and Dem Aloha Boys at Showdown in Charlotte. A losing effort Lanny reminds us. Though the Hughes Brothers hold their own, making several pin attempts (Testify!); Mongo Vyle and Rhino prove they don't need the Dark Circle either when they put Devon Hughes awy with the Utter Destriction flapjack/cutter combo.
COMMERCIAL BREAK
Okerlund and Poffo welcome us back from the last commercial break of the evening before hyping tonight's huge Main Event! They talk mostly about ECW Champion Arn Anderson's history with "Mr. Wrestling" Steve Corino and how having him at ringside will effect tonight's match; Corino being the man who ended "The Enforcer's" first run with the Title under some shady circumstances. "Fire" by Scooter then hits.
Gertner: The following non-Title contest is scheduled for one fall. Introducing first accompanied to the ring by "Mr. Wrestling" Steve Corino; weighing 277 lbs. from Carthage, North Carolina; he is Jason Venom!
Corino leads Venom down to the ring and mocks the booing fans.
Gertner: And now introducing at this time weighing 255 lbs. from Rome, Georgia; he is the Eastern Heavyweight Champion "The Enforcer" Arn Anderson!
Main Event: Arn Anderson vs. Jason Venom w/Steve Corino
Referee: S.D. Jones
Arn Anderson is alone tonight and he knows Steve Corino is at ringside as he shares a few words of warning with the arrogant former Champ before the match. Jones starts it up and still distracted by Corino; Arn gets blindsided by Jason Venom! The big man pummels the Champ and lays him out with a big boot that doesn't get a two count. He continues to throw him about the ring a bit; but "The Enforcer" rallies back and lays into Jason whom he traps in the corner with a knee strike and going up top begins raining down the punches! The fans count to 10 with him, but Corino pops up on the apron giving Venom the breather he needed to pull Arn off the second ropes and flatten him to the mat with the Venom sheer drop release powerBomb! 1!... 2!... Arn kicks out! Jason attempts to keep the Champ down, but Arn fights his way back once more and this time when Corino tries to interfere; Anderson grabs him by the head and clanks it together with that of his partner Jason Venom! Steve hits the floor while Venom reels about in a daze and Arn Anderson connects with the
Double A Spinning Spinebuster! 1!... 2!... 3! Arn has won it! And while Venom and Corino remove themselves from the ring...
"Thunderkiss '65" by White Zombie hits! And out from the back appears "The Long Island" Loud-Mouth" Chris Jericho! He stays out on the ramp while he tells us and that old fossil Arn Anderson how he once again proved last weekthat he's the best wrestler of this generation! And he'll prove it again! Cause he's going to Wrestle Annual baby! And he's going to walk out of Madison Square Garden the ECW Champion!
Lights Fade.
