In the weeks leading up to the October relaunch, here are some of the happenings in the major League Of Professional Wrestling...
AWA World Title
Rick Martel continues to be a fighting champion. He has defended his title against a variety of contenders including, but not limited to Mr. Saito, Billy Robinson (who has become a rulebreaker in order to have a better shot), former titlesist Nick Bockwinkel, and Brad Rheingans. Recently, a consortium of Japanese businessman affiliated with former champ Jumbo Tsuruta have signed an agreement with the notorious Sheik Adnan El Kaissey. The plan is for the Sheik to manage a wrestler to avenge Tsuruata's loss and the dishonor it brought to the Japanese people. Adnan has secured the contract of Tatsumi "Dragon" Fujinami to dethrone Martel.
AWA World Tag Team Titles
The Road Warriors, Hawk & Animal, along with manager "Precious' Paul Ellering, have held off challenges from many teams with The Fabulous Ones emerging as the top contenders. Ellering has said that he intends to start managing talent in addition to the champs, but they will only be dominant, brutal competitors like Hawk & Animal. They won't be a Family, like Bobby Heenan has. Families indicate weakness like The Waltons or Little House On The Prairie. Ellering is building a LEGION OF DOOM!
Changes
Stanley Blackburn made a rare appearance on AWA ALL STAR WRESTLING to make two announcements: 1) That he was resigning the AWA presidency and 2) That Bobby Heenan was suspended for life! Blackburn's replacement, Lord James Blears, made an appearance with Verne Gagne and they showed highlights of new talent headed into the AWA. Verne said that the AWA had previously concentrated on wrestlers from his generation and great veterans would always have a place in the AWA, but in the future, fans could expect to see some up and coming talent as well as wrestlers who previously had not appeared in the AWA. Among the names mentioned were Steve "Dr. Death' Williams, Jesse Barr, Jack Brisco, Mil Mascaras, & Hacksaw Butch Reed. Verne, of course, is giddy about the amatuer backgrounds of Williams, Barr, & Brisco.
Others
Tony Atlas is extremely popular with AWA fans. Curt Hennig is obviously a wrestler on the rise. Curt gets advice and occasioally teams with his dad, Larry " the Ax" Hennig, but is very much his own man. The Hennigs have had some hard fought matches for the tag belts. The Fabulous Ones, along with their AWA Tag Title chase, have been feuding with the Heenan Family, but Heenan's suspension, along with Mr. Saito leaving the AWA, may have put an end to that. Stan Lane missed several matches recently for unknown reasons and the bouts were switched to single bouts for Steve Keirn and Steve wrestled in a more agressive style than usual in those bouts. After, heenan's suspension was announced, Nick Bockwinkel teamed with Larry Zybysko in a TV bout and they looked solid as a team.
