Welcome fans, Main Event is on the air! WE ARE LIVE on the Superstation TBS and 90 minutes away from Showdown in Charlotte, the joint pay-per-view venture from the two top wrestling promotions in North America today, WCW and the PWI 1995 Wrestling Promotion of the Year, ECW. I am Tony Schiavone, joined as always by my partner ‘The American Dream’ Dusty Rhodes, and it certainly is an honor and a privilege to be sitting next to a man I’ve long admired, the golden voiced Gene Okerlund and his ECW partner and member of one of the greatest wrestling families of the all, ‘The Genius’ Lanny Poffo, who says that he can’t believe Dusty is able to talk after the beating he personally put on him last night on ECW’s Weekend Warriors. Dusty goes to say something but is politely interrupted by Mean Gene who says it is indeed an honor to be on TBS for the first time in his illustrious career. Tony and Gene chuckle that it will be a long night, while Duthtay says it might not be a very long night for “sugar britches” over there if he keeps it up, Lanny has an “I never” kind of face, as Gene quickly runs down the 4 big interpromotional matches set for Main Event!
‘Too Cool’ Brian Christopher and one of the toughest women on the planet, and former ECW Women’s Champion ‘Miss Texas’ Jacquelyn Moore team up to take on WCW upstart El Diablo and his mysterious valet, former Mexican Women’s Middleweight Champion, La Diablolica. In what promises to be an energizer bunny like tag-team encounter Lenny Lane and Christian Cage, the Highlight Express take on former ECW Light Heavyweight Champions Dangerous Doug and Cousin Jamie, the Bayou Boys. In what could be viewed as a number 1 contender’s match for their respective companies GenX or Lt. Heavyweight title the man known as Scorpio takes on ‘The Japanese Buzzsaw’ Tajiri, Lanny and Dusty finally agree on something, and that is the potential of this match-up. And in the Main Event, one of the most dangerous men in all of professional wrestling, a man quite familiar to WCW audiences, ‘Canadian Crippler’ Chris Benoit takes on longtime Canadian great, former AWA Heavyweight and World Tag Team Champion, Rick Martel. Gene says it will be great to call a Rick Martel match again, and that he fondly remembers the classics Martel had defending the AWA Heavyweight Championshp.

Mauro Ranallo and the Honky Tonk Man are together and looking ruggedly handsome if HTM does say so himself. Mauro thanks him, but “I was talking about me Rahnahllo.” Maura can’t help but chuckle as he tells us to call into the Hotline tonight, 1-900-909-9900, and hear Mauro and Honky dishing on what’s going down in the back, whose here, whose not, will there be any unannounced surprises tonight? Mauro says that he can remember being at Windsor University back home in Canada, he and his fraternity brothers ordered Wrestlemania III, and that watching Ricky Steamboat and Randy Savage that night decided it for him right then and there he knew he would be calling professional wrestling if he had any say in it. Honky says that he was there in the Silverdome that night, and just thinkin’ bout the match gives him goosebumps. The place was rockin, every fan in arena, and every “boy in the back” on their feet, hanging on every move, every near fall, “if there was ever a perfect wrestling match that didn’t involve HTM, it was that one.” High praise from HTM indeed. We're then taken backstage where Sting is busy wishing Rick Martel luck on his match tonight. Just then however he's approached by...
The "Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase?! Ted shakes Sting's hand before telling him that it must be nice being here tonight wishing other people luck on their matches tonight. But where's Sting's match? He tells Sting that like he told him before, he's being disrespected in WCW. That he should be wearing the World Title by now. That he should stand back and think to himself, what's in it for Sting? You have my card. Sting shakes his head and watches as DiBiase exits.

Intergender Tag match: El Diablo & La Diabolica vs. Brian Christopher & Jacqueline Moore
Referee: Danny Davis
La Diabolica locks things up with the three time ECW Women's Champ Jacqueline Moore while the announcers talk about how this is the first Intergender match in either company's history. Dusty isn't sure he likes it. Do the ladies only hit the ladies? The masked luchadoress is looking good as she nails Jackie with a bronco buster and keeps the advantage with a Gory Special for a bit. Brian Christopher interferes causing El Diablo to enter the ring and drop him over the top rope with a Frankensteiner! And as "Too Cool" gets to his feet, Diablo charges across the ring taking him down with a plancha dive! While Davis and the audience are distracted by this, Moore takes the chance to rake Diabolica's eyes! From there she takes over the match repeatedly stomping her out before whipping across the ring and knocking her head off with an elbow smash for a two count! She works Diabolica over some more before trapping her in the corner where she sets her up for a superplex which connects! 1!... 2!...
Diabolica kicks out! Jackie cannot believe it and makes the tag to Brian Christopher who throws a punch at Diabolica! But his hand is caught by Danny Davis?! Davis is shaking his hand and instructs Jackie to get out of the ring! And for Diablo to enter! Christopher doesn't like this one bit and argues with Davis when he's hit by a double knee backbreaker from behind and the masked luchador makes the cover! 1!... 2!...
Christopher just kicks out! He's in trouble though as El Diablo keeps on top of him working over "Too Cool's" back with another backbreaker over his knee and traps him in a surfboard! Jackie comes in however and stomps Diablo's head in! She is order from the ring by Davis, but now both men are down. They both get up at the same time and throw several punches before Diablo whips Brian into the ropes! On the rebound however he connects with a dropkick! From there he rallies back and the two men are evenly matched until Brian fires off with a superkick that connects! It fails to gain the three, but from there the match belongs to Brian Christopher who ends up putting El Diablo away with the Hip Hop guillotine legdrop for the first win of the night.

‘Japanese Buzzsaw’ Tajiri w/Mr. Fuji vs. Scorpio w/Clarence Mason
Referee: Randy Anderson
As Scorpio and Tajiri begin to circle one another, the diabolical one, Mr. Fuji begins circling “C. Mase” as Scorpio calls him. This draws Scorpio to the apron, one foot in and one foot out of the ring, waving his finger at Fuji. Meanwhile, in ninja like fashion, Tajiri sneaks up and kicks the middle rope and has Scorpio’s undivided attention now. Fuji laughs maniacally as Tajiri sets in with his unique offensive arsenal, complete with the Buzzsaw Kicks. Scorpio’s awareness was clear as made sure to take the kicks to the shoulder, sternum, stomach, or leg, but under no circumstances take one to the head.
The man Clarence Mason calls “Prime” kicks things into high gear, working through the impact of Tajiri’s early body blows which had obviously taken their toll. Wisely Scorpio resorted to a mat based exchange, where he used his 240 lbs to his advantage, and wore on his smaller, yet ever tenacious advisary. Tajiri fought back with some knee strikes to the shoulder blades of Scorpio, and got a near fall after blasting off the ropes and into a knelt Scorpio with the “Shining Wizard” knee strike of doom! Its over! 1….2……….NO! Scorpio kicks out, Tajiri can’t believe it and neither can Mr. Fuji. Scorpio rolls Tajiri up, 1…..2…..NO!
Scorpio narrowly ducks the buzzsaw kick to his head, he ankle pick’s Tajiri, feet behind the knees, seated surfboard, and he has one hand on Tajiri’s wrist, and the other with, “a handful of beak!” Shrieks Lanny. Tajiri refused to quit and forced a rope break, Scorpio flew up to the top rope, but the just as fleet Tajiri meets him there! Headbutts from each man results in Tajiri crashing down to the mat! 450 Primetime Splash, Scorpio hooks the leg, 1…..2…….3!

The Diamond Doll Kimberly is on hand in the interviewing area, and welcomes the one, the only, Nature Boy Ric Flair, “You are looking liiiiive tonight sugar, in Charlotte….. North Carolina! We are all live tonight, here on the Capital Hill of Flair Country WOOOO! Double A, I hope you know exactly what you have gotten yourself into brother. While you might be my best friend, once we walk that loooooong, lonely aisle, and we are competing for THIS! The ECW Heavyweight Wrestling Championship, pal, you are stepping into the ring with the ‘Naitch,’ you are stepping in there with ‘the dirtiest player in the game,’ and Enforcer, you are stepping in there with a WRESTLING GOD! WOOOOOOOOOO”
Kimberly sends it over to ECW Correspondent Terri Runnels standing by with the challenger, “Terri….”

“Thanks Doll, I’m standing here with Arn Anderson, former ECW Champion, and Arn, tonight is the big one.”
“You are exactly right Terri. It don’t get no bigger than wrestling Ric Flair, for the top prize in the game, in Charlotte. To say I have butterflies would be an understatement, my hand hurts like hell, but you know what? I still got the best left punch in the business. I can still hit the Ghordbuster, I can still hit the DDT, I damn sure can still hit the Spinebuster, and I don’t care if your name is Tajiri or Scorpio who just a helluva match, or if your name is Ric Flair, when Double A hits one of the big three on you, its lights out.”
“I want to correct you Ric about one thing. Charlotte is more than Flair country.” Inciting a HUGE response from the Independence Arena audience. “I ain’t no stranger here myself, Naitch. If I hold up the symbol of excellence;” which he does, garnering another big time reaction, “they respect the Enforcer too. This isn’t your home court Ric, we are cousins, we are brothers, and we are fighting in our backyard. Instead of Ole breaking it up before we take down the grill, a referee is actually going to raise one of our hands, and declare one of us, on this night, the better man. And Arn Anderson can live with whatever that decision may be, but can you, Ric?”
Tony, Dusty, Gene, and Lanny are in unison goosebump mode anticipating that one, see it LIVE and only on PAY PER VIEW TONIGHT!!!!

The Highlight Express vs. The Bayou Boys

Lenny Lane and Christian Cage make their way out as pompously as ever, making fun of fans at ringside and high fiving. Doug Gilbert and Cousin Jamie came out doing their trademark dosey doe that got the crowd here in Charlotte into the fun as well. The dosey doe continued inside the ring, which upset the Highlight Express, who were yelling at Doug and Jamie to “quit it.” That is when the Bayou Boys stopped, “nah nah uh boo boo” faced with their tongues out, the Highlights charged, but Doug and Jamie clasped elbows, and dosey doed out of harm’s way and Lenny and Christian took a mean tumble to the floor much to the delight of the fans they were earlier heckling at ringside. Doug and Jamie took a bow.
Once locked up a fantastic, back and forth tag team encounter slowly began to unfold. As the Bayou Boys took it to Christian Cage in the early going Dusty mentioned how “dis was all part of the plan” WTH?? “What yall lookin at all crazy? Doug, Jamie, and I strategerized, played horseshoes, and listened to the “Soggy Bottom Boys” latest bluegrass masterpiece.” Which rang true once Doug Gilbert landed a couple bionic elbows for near falls. But Christian is a man who has proven his worth in recent months on Nitro and fought back valiantly; making sure his partner was in dominant position before the tag by catching Cousin Jamie with a dropkick as he tried to prevent the tag.
Now it was the Highlight Express’ turn, and they used timing and precision to keep Jamie and Doug off-balanced, and performed it all in their half of the ring. “Quintessential tag team strategy” points out Lanny, Dusty says he “always thought a quint was a fruit, but I guess fruits are essential right?” Lenny flies off the top rope missing a big splash, and he is hurting bad, Doug has suffered quite a beating, but somehow manages to make the tag to Jamie who comes in firing on all cylinders. Dropkick for Lenny, the same for Christian. Roaring elbow strike for Lenny, roaring lariat drops Christian, Jamie heads to the top rope, dropkicks both Highlight Express! COME ON! Jamie hits the ropes, body splash on both members of the Express, he covers ‘em both, Doug dog piles, 1…….2………NO! Lenny and Christian somehow managed to escape the bottom.
Lenny seeks the safety of the floor, but SUICIDA TOPE, Cousin Jamie flies between the middle and top rope and takes out Lane! He is fired up and self doseying at ringside, Christian shoots both feet through the middle rope and right into Jamie’s face, he leaps right back up, Springboard dropkick for Doug, 1…….2………NO! Christian misses an elbow drop, Doug misses a second rope splash, and Christian goes up FROG SPLASH CONNECTS! 1….2…….3! The Highlight Express survived this encounter!

Mauro and Honky exit their set up as Eastern States Champion Randy Savage and United States Champion Ricky Steamboat make their way out…
“Oooooh yea, the time isa tickin Dragon. Yes it is. Much like the funky tune in the video package from earlier, I know the pieces fit, because I watched them fall away, dig it, yeaaah I did. 1987 I had you DEAD TO RIGHTS, and I lost to you Dragon, I can admit that. That loss fueled me on to gain my first of many World Championships at the same event the following year. Randy Savage has proven to be the cream of the crop. I have avenged each and every loss of my career Steamboat, except 1. I beat Hogan worse than he ever beat me, I beat Arn Anderson, I beat Ric Flair, I beat Rick Rude, I beat the Warrior, I beat Papa Shango; you name a man that has been lucky enough to pin Randy Savage’s shoulders to the mat, I beat em all up. All except….”
“All except me, Randy. I’m sure it’s eating you up, as it should any real athlete, which is exactly why I look forward to this match. People talk to me about that match as much as they do you, and instead of letting it go to my head, you know what I thought? I thought it must eat you alive to hear the same questions. When even a punk like Jericho mentions being influenced by our match, I WON it Randy, and you lost it.” Randy’s eyes begin to bug out. “Even your brother called it the greatest wrestling match he ever witnessed, your own flesh and blood. People asked me why I would take this match, I don’t have anything to prove, but I beg to differ. The man looking me in the eyes today is not the same man I rolled up and pinned in 1987. This man is a more controlled frenzy, this man has become a legend, and I know better than most, it is not the triumph that stays with an athlete, it is the defeat, and Randy, I think, tonight, here in Charlotte, as I look into your eyes, I believe this man, THIS Randy Savage will test me like none other! I knew a 50% Ricky Steamboat couldn’t get the job done, and that animal Benoit wasn’t trying to win the match, he wasn’t just trying to punish me, he was trying to end my career, so yea I submitted, but don’t you think for one minute that gives you any kind of mental dominance over me. Ricky Steamboat wanted to be at his best because he knows that Randy Savage would be.”
“You damn right Dragon! Because the Macho Man ain’t after your belt, the Macho Man ain’t after your blood, oh no Ricky, I’m here for ME! You understand what I’m sayin’? I’m here to prove that Randy Savage can beat Ricky Steamboat, and I have to prove that to you Ricky! I have to prove that to me! Not to my brother or Chris Jericho, not even all these fans that paid to see the match of a lifetime. I’m fired up brother, the adrenaline is firing away, and I can guarantee you Steamboat, if it is the best Randy Savage you are looking for, then brother you found him, now take my hand Dragon, cause all’s respect’s out the window when that bell rings.”

Okerlund, Poffo, Schiavone, and Rhodes welcome us back from the last commercial break before the start of tonight's huge PPV event Showdown and Charlotte! They then hype the Main Event for tonight's pre-show in which former WCW TV Champion "The Canadian Crippler" Chris Benoit will face off against a Canadian hero and former Heavyweight Champion Rick Martel! They show a clip of Benoit's match against Steamboat this past Wednesday on ECW and agree with "The Dragon" that "The Crippler" indeed was trying to injure Ricky there and he made the smart decision keeping himself fresh for tonight's match with the "Macho Man" Randy Savage. Okerlund calls Benoit an animal and asks Tony and Dusty if they'd “consider taking it back to WCW with them?”
Penzer: The following contest is scheduled for one fall. Introducing first weighing 226 lbs. from Montreal, Quebec, Canada; Rick Martel!
Rick martel comes down to the ring to the cheers of the fans. He shakes hands with referee Nick Patrick.
And now introducing his opponent this evening from Montreal, Quebec, Canada weighing 234 lbs.; he is "The Canadian Crippler" Chris Benoit!
Main Event: Chris Benoit vs. Rick Martel

"The Genius" knows one thing for sure. Someone from Montreal, Quebec will be winning here tonight. Chris Benoit goes right after Rick Martel as the two men lock it up with Rick grabbing a quick side headlock. Benoit however fights his way out of it and throws Martel into the ropes, but takes Chris down with a shoulder block on the rebound! Rick then runs the ropes, Benoit keeping the the floor letting Martel run over him; and takes him down to the mat with a hiptoss on the return trip. But as Chris goes to grab his opponent, Rick pops up knocking Benoit back down to the floor! Both men are quick to get back up, but Benoit hoists Martel into the air and connects with a front powerslam! He goes to keep on top of him, but Rick kicks him away again and rolling to his feet catches "The Crippler" with a bodyslam of his own!
But Chris is right back up throwing Martel off balance as he retreats into the corner where Benoit comes in swinging! He begins pummeling Rick into the corner but he gets pulled away from Nick Patrick! Undaunted, Benoit returns with a kick to Martel's gut before leaving on his own accord. Given a breather Martel meets Chris in the middle of the ring where he fires off with several knee strikes to Chris' gut before hammering him in the face and goes for a whip which Chris reverses sending Martel into the ropes! But on the rebound Rick cartwheels out of harm’s way! Unfortunately that doesn't save him as Chris keeps right after him and throws him with a suplex! And as Rick stumbles up to his feet Benoit grabs him from behind!
But Martel circles around him going for a suplex of his own! But reaching down between his legs Chris pulls Martel off his feet and goes for the sharpshooter! But Rick gets his foot on Chris' ass and pushes him into the ropes! And Martel looks for a monkey flip on the rebound, but Chris cartwheels out of the way?! He seems to be mocking Martel! And he begins stomping him out! Chris explodes all over Rick as he viciously stomps him about the ring! Only now Martel has fought his way back up to his feet and he has Chris backtracking it into the ropes and whips him across the ring! And Rick connects with a huge back body drop! The fans begin cheering as Martel drops Benoit with a series of clotheslines that finally takes "The Crippler" over the top rope and out of the ring to the floor below! Following him outside, Chris pulls Martel to his feet and throws him into the steel steps! He then rolls Chris back into the ring and getting him in the corner climbs up to the second rope where he begins raining down the punches! 1! 2! 3! 4! 5! 6! 7! 8! 9! 10!
He then hops down, but Chris charges him with a forearm smash! He then hoists Rick up off his feet and crotches him on the top rope! And proceeds to clothesline him out of the ring! Chris then climbs out onto the apron and nails Martel with a diving foot stomp before he begins stomping a mud hole into him again! Martel crawls away, but he's too close to the steel steps and Chris introduces his opponent's face to the steel! And he does it again! He then rolls Martel back into the ring where he kicks him in the head before bullying him into the ropes and going for the Irish whip! And on the rebound he beheads Rick with a clothesline! He then pulls Rick back up to his feet, pops his hips; and nails him with a gut-wrench suplex! The cover only gets him a two. He then pulls Rick back up to his feet and whips him again but this time Benoit gets nailed with a flying crossbody out of nowhere! Martel hooks the leg! 1!... 2!...
Chris kicks out! Both men are back up, but Chris grabs Martel again tossing him with yet another suplex. Chris helps Martel up to his feet and gives him a good crack with a headbutt before trapping him in the corner and letting him have it with several vicious chops! Martel however fights his way out and whips Benoit into the opposing corner where he charges in for a spear! But Chris hops out of the way and Martel slams right into the steel pole! And pulling him out of the corner Chris Benoit locks in the Crippler Crossface! Martel is fighting it! But he taps! He's had enough!
But Chris just keeps it locked in! He's punishing Rick! But Nick Patrick is a pest, and getting up to his feet Benoit pushes the ref down to the floor! He then begins stomping on Martel's head and makes a throat slashing motion before pulling Rick up to his feet and "The Canadian Crippler" hammers his opponent into the mat with not one, not two, but three consecutive German Suplexes!
