Airing: Friday, May 24, 1985, ESPN
Interviewer: Gene Okerlund

Gene Okerlund: Welcome to another edition of Superstars of the Ring. We have a blockbuster show for you this evening, as you will see the monster Big Van Vader in action, Big John Studd faces Jim Brunzell, Lex Lugar takes on the Latin Heartthrob Al Perez, and in our huge main event, the new tag team duo Strike Force, Tito Santana and Rick Martell meet Gary Hart’s dangerous duo of One Man Gang and Nord the Barbarian.
We are just weeks away from the start of the huge Summer tour known as Festival of Champions. The four Festival locations are: Portland, Oregon on June 2; Chicago, Illinois on July 7; Denver, Colorado on August 4 and San Francisco, California on September 1. At the Portland card, you will see UWE Heavyweight Champion Magnum TA defending his belt in a rematch against Roddy Piper, UWE tag-team champions Rock and Roll Express will face their old friends the Bulldogs, UWE Television Champion Nikita Koloff will defend his belt against former champion Tito Santana, Rick Martel will take on Jake Roberts, and Lex Lugar will meet Big John Studd. This is going to be a historic card! If you are anywhere in the Pacific Northwest, make your plans now to be there in-person.
Lord James Blears also announced that the Festival in Chicago will host one of the biggest tag-team tournaments in the history of wrestling called DARE CUP, where teams will battle for a one-million dollar prize. We suspected that tag team’s would be flocking to the UWE for a shot at this life-changing victory, and those predictions have proved to be very accurate. Last week Strike Force appeared on our program and we’ll see them later tonight in action. We are now joined by another new duo who hope to conquer the tag-team scene. One is a familiar face, one is a newcomer. Please welcome Adrian and Dick Murdoch.
Adrian Adonis: Look here Gene, you talk about a million dollars, one of the biggest prizes in all of wrestling, there ain’t nothing that’s going to stop me from winning that check. I’ve proven time and time again that I am one of the toughest men to work in this promotion. I come from the mean streets of New York. These pretty boys out here are no match for this East Coast attitude. To make sure we win that money, I’ve brought in someone as tough as me, someone who also hates all these hippy, veggie, new wave loving freaks in California. This man, Dick Murdoch, you ain’t never seen anyone like him before.
Dick Murdoch: All these long-haired freaks running around here make me sick. Down in Texas, we’d never put up with nonsense. You show up down in Amarillo looking like that you’re lucky if we let you leave alive. Adrian called me up, told me we got a million dollars on the line. We come from different parts of the country, he’s a New York boy and I’m as Texas as they come. But we have one thing in common: beating the tar out of anyone who steps in our way. I’m here in the UWE and I promise ya’ll something, this promotion won’t ever be the same.
Gene Okerlund: Another team has made it’s way to the UWE with the goal of winning the DARE CUP and the million dollars that comes with it. We’ll see Murdoch and Adonis in action on next week’s program. Let’s head to the ring as the vicious Big Van Vader faces Sweet Brown Sugar. Rod Trongard and Dutch Savage are on the call.
Match #1
Big Van Vader w/ Gary Hart defeated Sweet Brow Sugar via pinfall.

Gene Okerlund: As we’ve talked about before, some of the best tag-team wrestling in the world is right here in the UWE. We have new teams coming into the promotion and some established teams who are gunning for the DARE CUP. One such is duo are our next guests, let’s welcome Tommy Rich and Tracy Smothers. We have just been informed that Rich and Smothers will face the Sheepherders at the Portland Festival.
Tommy Rich: Appreciate you Gene and all our great fans out there on ESPN. We have a whole bunch of new teams coming into the promotion thinking they’re going to be top dogs. I’m gonna give you all some advice: don’t you dare overlook Tracy and I. We’ve been fighting the top competitors in UWE for months now and we’ve sure won a whole lot more than we’ve lost. In Chicago, with one million dollars on the line, we’re going to do what we do best: win matches for the great fans of the Universal Wrestling Enterprise.
Tracy Smothers: Don’t think for one second we’re looking past the Sheepherders. Those ol’ boys know how to wrestle and we have to be at the top of our game for that match. Facing, and beating, teams like the Sheepherders is exactly what we’re going to have to do to win the DARE CUP. We know how to wrestle, we know how to fight, we plan on having a very good Summer. With you all in our corner, the team of Rich and Smothers is leaving Portland with a win, and leaving Chicago with a million dollars!
Gene Okerland: Tommy Rich and Tracy Smothers warn everyone that you ignore them at your own peril. Let’s had to the ring as Big John Studd takes on one-half of the Killer Bees, Jim Brunzell.
Match #2
Big John Studd defeated Jim Brunzell via pinfall.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: Our next guest will be facing Rick Martel at the Festival of Champions in Portland to settle some old scores between the two. Joining us now is Jake the Snake Roberts.
Jake Roberts: Rick Martel, you made a very big mistake, coming into my home and making all sorts of threats against me. What kind of person comes into a snake’s den and tries to pick a fight? You’re not being smart, you’re not being courageous, you’re just being down right stupid. You see, a snake protects it’s den at all costs, it does whatever it needs to in order to protect it’s home. This is my home and you are going to find a very ominous welcome in store for you. When I’m done with you in Portland, you are not making to the DARE CUP in Chicago.
Gene Okerlund: Jake Roberts sends a very powerful message to Ric Martel as the two will meet on June 2 at the Festival of Champions in Portland. Let’s go the ring as Lex Lugar will meet the dangerous Al Perez.
Match #3
Lex Lugar defeated Al Perez via pinfall.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: Before our big main event, we are joined by the man who will face Roddy Piper in the main event at the Festival of Champions in Portland, the heavyweight champion of the world, Magnum TA.
Magnum TA: We fought too long, we fought too hard, to give up this heavyweight title. Piper had a death-grip on this belt for a long time. With your help, thanks to your cheers, your encouragement, your support, we took that title from Piper and brought it home to the fans. In Portland, I know Piper is going to give everything he has to try and get it back. It’s going to be one heck of a battle. But like our match in Los Angeles, it’s a war I’m going to win. Roddy Piper, you better bring every dirty trick you got, because this title is staying right here with me, with the fans. Bring it on Piper, we’re ready for you!
Gene Okerlund: Magnum TA is ready to defend world title against the former champ. Magnum will be in action on next week’s program as he will face the tough cowboy Ron Bass. Let’s head to the ring for our main event of the night.
Match #4
Strike Force (Tito Santana and Rick Martel) defeated One Man Gang and Nord the Barbarian w/ Gary Hart.
Gene Okerlund: An impressive victory for Strike Force and a reminder why they have to be considered top candidates to bring home the DARE CUP. On our program next week, you’ll see Adrian Adonis and Dick Murdoch against the Killer Bees, the world heavyweight champion Magnum TA will be in action, and you’ll hear from the TV champ Nikita Koloff. Till next week wrestling fans.
