Sacramento, CA
Taped: Tuesday, April 23, 1985
Airing: Friday, April 26, 1985, ESPN
Interviewer: Gene Okerlund
Announcers: Rod Trongard and Dutch Savage

Gene Okerlund: Welcome to another edition of Superstars of the Ring. We have a great show for you, as tonight Rick Martel will make his debut, Junkyard Dog will meet Al Perez, Vader will face Tony Atlas, and in our huge main event, the world tag-team champion Rock and Roll Express will defend their belts against Nord the Barbarian and One Man Gang.
In just over a week, at the Forum in Los Angeles, the Universal Wrestling Enterprise is putting on one of the biggest cards of the year: Countdown to Greatness. On Cinco de Mayo, many of the best stars in the world will be in action. If you can’t make it in person, closed circuit locations will be available around the nation. Let’s take a look at this blockbuster card booked for the Forum: UWE Heavyweight Champion Roddy Piper will defend his title against his former ally Magnum TA, World Tag-Team Champions the Rock and Roll Express will defend their belts against the Bulldogs, UWE Television Champion Nikita Koloff will take on Lex Lugar, Ron Bass will battle Superfly Jimmy Snuka, Junkyard Dog will meet the monster Big John Studd, Tito Santana will face Adrian Adonis, and in an international showcase bout, Dos Caras will meet El Hijo del Santo. It’s my privilege to announce another match for this huge night of wrestling: Captain Lou Albano’s Wild Samoans will take on the popular duo of Tommy Rich and Tracy Smothers. The night just keeps getting better and better!
Last week, we heard from newcomer Rick Martel who had some choice words for Jake Roberts, talking about the history they have together. Here to respond to those comments is the one they call the Snake, Mr. Jake Roberts.
Jake Roberts: Rick Martel, you think you can come to the UWE and make a name for yourself by challenging me in front of this international audience?! You think you can come into my home, my snake den, and talk all sort of bluster. I have some news for your Martel, you made a very bad decision. You see, the snake doesn’t forget. You and I have had battles all over the country, I know what you can do…and I know what you can’t do. A snake does not forget his opponent’s weaknesses, a snake knows where his prey is vulnerable. You made a decision to come into the snake’s den, it’s a decision you will soon regret very much. Lord James Blears, I don’t want this boy running his mouth about me any longer. Set a match, so I can send him packing immediately.
Gene Okerlund: Jake Roberts did not take too kindly to Rick Martel’s comments last week on our program, and is demanding an immediate match. Let’s head to the ring for our first contest of the night. Rod Trongard and Dutch Mantell are on the call.
Match #1
Rick Martel defeated Enrique Vera via pinfall.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: The wrestling world is eager with anticipation over the showdown between UWE World Champion Roddy Piper and his former friend, the popular Magnum TA. You have the man who has been world champion for over a year defeating all contenders. But he’s never faced anyone quite like Magnum TA. Will the champ be able to hold onto his belt at Countdown to Greatness? Here to talk about his big title defense is Roddy Piper.
Roddy Piper: Mean Gene, let me ask you a question? Why do you ask such idiotic questions? Am I going to be able to keep my world title? As if there’s any question. I’ve held this belt for over a year in the most competitive promotion in all of wrestling. I’ve beaten every person they put in front of me. And for most of that time, I had to do it with you fans on my back. I had to carry all you selfish, ungrateful morons with me. No more! I’ve shed that dead weight, I’ve shed the expectations of the fans. Now I fight for me! No one else. You thought I was tough before, you ain’t seen nothing yet, jack. I’m a new man, but at Countdown to Greatness, it’ll be the same result. I’ll remain the heavyweight champion of the world. Magnum, you and all these loser fans: ain’t nothing you can do about it!
Gene Okerlund: The world champion sounds rather confident heading into Countdown to Greatness. He’ll need to be at the top of his game as we all know Magnum TA is going to do all he can to take the belt from him. Let’s go to the ring for our next match of the evening.
Match #2
Junkyard Dog defeated Al Perez via pinfall.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: One of the most anticipated matches at Countdown to Greatness will see the Russian Nightmare Nikita Koloff defend his Television Championship against the impressive Lex Lugar. Koloff has been on a tear lately, running through competition in the name of mother Russia. Joining us now to tell us how he plans on stopping the Russian menace is Lex Lugar.
Lex Lugar: Thank you Gene and thank you to all the amazing fans out there watching on ESPN, and those fans cheering here in the arena. I’ll tell you how I’m going to stop Koloff, the same way we’ve always beaten the Russians, working harder, training harder, preparing harder. Koloff may come out here talking tough trying to intimidate people. It’s not working on me. This is a fight for more than just a championship belt, it’s a fight to stop the Russians who want to take over. Koloff, I’m taking that television title off your grimy, commie hands. For the fans, for this country, you are going down.
Gene Okerlund: Lex Lugar knows he’s fighting more than a wrestling match, he’s fighting for the United States of America! We’ll have our own Cold War at Countdown to Greatness on May 5. Let’s go to the ring as the dangerous Big Van Vader takes on Sweet Brown Sugar.
Match #3
Big Van Vader w/ Gary Hart defeated Sweet Brown Sugar via pinfall.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: In our main event tonight, the Rock and Roll Express will defend the world tag-team titles against Gary Hart’s team of One Man Gang and John Nord. If the Express can keep those belts, there will be no rest, as they defend the titles at Countdown to Greatness against the Bulldogs. The two teams fought to a draw last time they met, will it be different at the Forum on May 5. Joining us now to talk about their big match are the Bulldogs.
Davey Boy Smith: Will things be different? Of course they will. This time, we’re leaving the ring with the tag-team championship. We’re leaving with our hands raised. We know the Rock and Roll Express are great tag-team. They are two time UWE champions for a reason. But knowing how tough they are, all that does it make us work longer and harder to make sure we’ll be ready to take those belts on May 5.
Bret Hart: We didn’t come to the UWE to make new best friends. We came here to win the most prestigious tag-team title in all of wrestling. Our goal is within reach. We plan to do whatever it takes to win those belts. If that means beating our former friends, then so be it. We made a vow to win the tag-team titles and we will make good on that promise at Countdown to Greatness.
Gene Okerlund: The Bulldogs aren’t letting sentimentality get in the way of the preparation for their match against the Rock and Roll Express at Countdown to Greatness. Before we get to that card, the RR Express have a tough title defense in our main event.
Match #4
UWE Tag-Team Champions Rock and Roll Express defeated One Man Gang and Nord the Barbarian w/ Gary Hart when Robert Gibson pinned the Barbarian.
Gene Okerlund: A huge win for the Rock and Roll Express, but one has to wonder how much this tough contest took out of them as they prepare to meet the Bulldogs at the Forum next weekend. That’s all the time we have for tonight. Join us next week fans as we’ve just been informed that the main event will feature Jake Roberts against Rick Martel! Till next week wrestling fans.
