Gene Okerlund: Welcome to another edition of Superstars of the Ring. We have an amazing lineup for you this evening, as the phenom Lex Lugar will be action, Tommy Rich and Tracy Smothers take on Gary Hart’s duo of One Man Gang and Nord the Barbarian, Colonel Debeers will face Tony Atlas, and in our huge main event, Tito Santana defends his title against Nikita Koloff.
Last week, UWE Commissioner Lord James Blears announced that we will be promoting a huge card at the Forum in Los Angeles on May 5 to commemorate our one-year anniversary. The blockbuster card is being billed as “Countdown to Greatness”. Already announced for that big show will be UWE Heavyweight Champion Roddy Piper defending his belt against his former friend Magnum TA. I can also announce a few more matches this evening. Based on their time-limit draw during last week’s television program, the UWE Competition Committee has ordered a rematch between the Rock and Roll Express and the Bulldogs at Countdown to Greatness. In addition, Lex Lugar and Nikita Koloff, who have been engaged in a war of words since they both arrived in the UWE, will face off in the Forum. We’ll continue to announce more great matches in the coming weeks, but with Piper taking on Magnum TA, the Rock and Roll Express meeting the Bulldogs, and Nikita Koloff facing of against Lex Lugar, the card is already a must-see!
Joining us as our first guests this evening are the men who will be challenging for the tag-team titles at Countdown to Greatness, the Bulldogs, Bret Hart and Davey Boy Smith.
Bret Hart: The Rock and Roll Express held on to their tag-team belts last week not because they were better team than us, not because they beat us, but because of the timekeeper’s watch. We had the Express on the ropes, we had those title belts in our grasp. At Countdown to Greatness, we will finish the job we started last week.
Davey Boy Smith: People ask us how can you go against your friends, how can you fight people you’ve stood with in battle. The answer is simple: wrestling is about rising to the top of the sport, about winning it all. There is no greater title than to be the UWE World Tag-Team Champions. We have never settled for anything less than greatness, and you will see that when we win the world titles at Countdown to Greatness.
Gene Okerlund: The Bulldogs are ready for their rematch against the Rock and Roll Express. That match is going to give fans a lot of heartache wondering who to cheer for. Let’s head to the ring for our first match of the evening. Rod Trongard and Dutch Savage are on the call.
Match #1
Lex Lugar defeated Art Crews via pinfall.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: In our last segment, you saw another impressive match from the phenom Lex Lugar who will step into the ring with Nikita Koloff at Countdown to Greatness. Our next guest will surely be added to that card soon. Please welcome the Superfly, Jimmy Snuka.
Jimmy Snuka: Thank you brother Gene, and thank you to all the fans out there who have been cheering on the Superfly. There’s some tough competition here in the UWE. Every week you have to be on top of your game or one of these vultures will take you down. As my opponents have learned, I am always on top of my game. Whether it’s this wanna-be cowboy Ron Bass or this New York punk Adrian Adonis. It doesn’t matter who the UWE decided to put in the ring with me, I’ll do what I always, win for the fans.
Gene Okerlund: Jimmy Snuka is ready to take on all comers. We’ll find out next week who he will be facing at Countdown to Greatness.
Match #2
Tommy Rich and Tracy Smothers defeated One Man Gang and Nord the Barbarian w/ Gary Hart via DQ.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: Joining us next is the man who will have one of the biggest matches of his career on May 5 as he challenges for the world heavyweight championship. Let’s hear from the popular Magnum TA.
Magnum TA: I appreciate the introduction Gene and thank you as always to the best wrestling fans in the world. I sit back, I think about my friendship with Roddy Piper, I think about the many wars we fought side by side. Then I think about his betrayal, how he let his jealously and greed take control. We fought together Piper, but now we’ll stand in the ring as enemies. That betrayal, it’s nothing but motivation for me, to train harder, to study harder, to prepare harder. I will take that world title at the Forum, that’s something I’m promising to all the wrestling fans you betrayed.
Gene Okerlund: Last week, Magnum expressed disappointment at Piper’s betrayal. Now, he’s using it to get him ready for his world title bout at Countdown to Greatness. Let’s head to the ring for our next match as Colonel Debeers is in action against Tony Atlas.
Match #3
Tony Atlas defeated Colonel Debeers via pinfall. An irate Colonel Debeers berated the referee, arguing that his shoulders were up during the pinfall count.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: Before we go to our huge main event, we are joined by one of the toughest men in the business, the outlaw Ron Bass.
Ron Bass: Snuka, how dare you come out here and even speak my name. What makes you think you can challenge me, that you can think of stepping in the ring with me. I’ve watched your matches boy, and I can tell you, I’m not impressed. Flying around the ring like some lunatic, afraid to face your opponent in the middle of the ring. Back where I’m from, we have a name for someone who fights like you. Because this is national television, I won’t say it. But I will say that you picked a fight with the wrong outlaw when you tried to criticize me. Now, it’s time to make you pay the price.
Gene Oklerlund: Ron Bass took offense to Jimmy Snuka’s comments earlier in the program and now he’s out for revenge. It’s time for our huge main event, as Tito Santana defends his title against Nikita Koloff.
Match #4
Nikita Koloff defeats Tito Santana via pinfall to win the UWE Television Championship. During the match, as the ref was distracted, Koloff struck Santana with the Russian flag he carries to ringside. He covered for the pin as the referee counted to three. Koloff continued his assault on Santana until Lex Lugar came to ringside. The two men jawed at each other as security separated them.
Gene Okerlund: We have a new television champion, albeit under dubious circumstances. We’ll have full reaction next week, and we’ll also see the world heavyweight champion Roddy Piper in action. Until next week wrestling fans!
