Gene Okerlund: Welcome to another edition of Superstars of the Ring. We have a great show for you, as you will see Gary Hart’s stable of One Man Gang, John Nord and Big Van Vader in action, Jimmy Snuka will meet Doug Sommers, Big John Studd and Jake Roberts take on the Killer Bees, and in our huge main event, UWE tag-team champions the Rock and Roll Express defend their belts against the Bulldogs, who won a title shot by winning the four-team tag match at Prime Time Classic.
Last Friday night history was made here on ESPN as we broadcast the first UWE live wrestling card. It was such a monumental evening, with fans seeing five great matches. As many memorable moments as there were, the wrestling world continues to be shocked by the ending of the night where Roddy Piper attacked Magnum TA following their match with John Studd and Jake Roberts. We will hear from Magnum later in the program, but at this time, we are joined by the man who shocked the wrestling world, UWE heavyweight champion Roddy Piper.
Wrestling fans around the world are wondering, why?
Roddy Piper: These wrestling fans want to know why? Maybe I want to know why? I want to know why these idiots don’t respect and admire the work of the greatest heavyweight champion in the world. Why they choose to cheer for some second-rate star when they have a true Hollywood A-lister right in front of them. Every single person they’ve put in the ring with me, I’ve beaten. I used to think I was doing it for the fans. I was wrong. I’m doing it for the only person that matters: ME. All of you geeks out there who want to cheer for Magnum, go ahead. I have news for you jack, I’m going to do to him what I’ve done to all the pretenders: leave them beaten, on the ground, wishing they had never stepped in the ring with me. The only difference is, I’m winning for me, and only me. Magnum, anytime you want pal, I’m right here ready to teach you a lesson.
Gene Okerlund: Roddy Piper has turned his back on the wrestling fans and issued a challenge to Magnum TA. We will hear from Magnum later in the program. Let’s head to the ring for our first match of the evening. Rod Trongard and Dutch Savage are on the call.
Match #1
One Man Gang, Nord the Barbarian and Big Van Vader w/ Gary Hart defeated Art Crews, Buddy Lane and Frankie Williams via pinfall.
Gene Okerlund: Before we go to break, we are joined by the Commissioner of the UWE, Lord James Blears, who has a special announcement.
Lord James Blears: Prime Time Classic was an incredible success as the UWE continues to show fans why we are the greatest promotion in the world. In May, the UWE will celebrate its one-year anniversary, and we will commemorate this occasion with a huge card at the Forum in LA on May 5. This annual card will be titled “Countdown to Greatness”. If you can’t make it to LA, you will still have the opportunity to watch the card at one of our many closed circuit locations at arenas and theatres around the nation. You won't want to miss out on Countdown to Greatness! I can also announce tonight that we are giving Roddy Piper his wish for a match against Magnum TA, as the two of them will meet in the main event at Countdown to Greatness for the UWE Heavyweight Championship! Also, because it is Cinco de Mayo, to honor our many Mexican fans, we are bringing in two Mexican wrestling legends for a specialty bout, as Dos Caras will face El Hijo del Blue Demon. For those not familiar with these two, you won’t want to miss it! We will continue to announce many more matches over the coming weeks.
Gene Okerlund: Huge news! This revolutionary promotion continues to seek innovative ways to bring wrestling fans the best action in the world. On May 5, you will see an amazing night of wrestling, and for those who can’t be at the Forum, you can watch at one of our closed circuit locations.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: On Prime Time Classic, we saw the debut of an amazing physical specimen named Lex Lugar. He issued a warning to Nikita Koloff that he better stop putting down America or there would be a price to pay. Let’s welcome Lex Lugar.
Lex Lugar: I know you’ve been running like wild over the UWE since you got here Koloff, I know some people may be scared of you. I ain’t one of them. When I hear you putting down the United States, it makes my blood boil. You hate this country so much, good, it’s my goal to send you back home. For these fans in the arena, for the fans watching on television, for all the men and women who serve our county, I’m sending you back to Russia. Get your Winter jacket, I hear it’s cold in Russia.
Gene Okerlund: Lex Lugar has made a huge splash since arriving and has set his sights on Nikita Koloff. It looks like there may be a Cold War battlefront right here in the UWE! We’ll hear from Nikita Koloff later in the program.
Match #2
Jimmy Snuka defeated Doug Sommers via pinfall.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: In our last segment, we heard from newcomer Lex Lugar who vowed to protect America from the Russian threat. We are now joined by that threat, the Russian Nightmare Nikita Koloff.
Nikita Koloff: You think you can come in here and threaten me, you think you can get involved in my matches?! You are wrong Lugar. You have made the worst mistake of your life. You think you can protect these fans from the Russian threat. That is a dream Lugar, and I am the nightmare. I’ve been trained by KGB, I survived the Siberian Winters. Beating you will be like child’s play. Under orders from KGB, I demand the UWE Board of Directors set a match immediately with Lugar. I will show him that USSR is far superior, and Lugar will be my victim. SET THE MATCH! NOW!
Gene Okerlund: Nikita Koloff is rather agitated with Lex Lugar’s arrival in the UWE and is seeking an immediate match with the strongman. Let’s head to the ring for our next match of the evening.
Match #3
Jake Roberts and Big John Studd fought Tommy Rich and Tracy Smothers to a double countout.
---Commercial Break---
Gene Okerlund: We heard from Roddy Piper earlier in the program, as he explained his attack on Magnum TA and challenged him to a match. He got his wish and the two will meet at Countdown to Greatness. To get his response on all these happenings, we are now joined by Magnum TA.
Magnum TA: Thank you Gene and thank you to all the great fans in the arena and those watching on television. You all know I fight for you and I do it the right way. Not by cheating, not with foreign objects, but beating the wrestler I’m against with skill and talent. I do it the right way because that’s what you all deserve. Roddy Piper has decided to take the easy way out, to take a shortcut instead of hard work. I don’t pretend to know why Piper did what he did, but he made his decisions. Those decisions now lead us to be matched as opponents at Countdown to Greatness. I respected you Piper, I respected your status as champion. But now that you’ve decided to join the liars and the cheaters, I’m coming for you, and I’m going to make sure after Countdown to Greatness, these fans will have a world champion they can be proud.
Gene Okerlund: Magnum seems rather disappointed in the actions of Piper, but is going to use his disappointment as motivation to challenge Piper for the world title. It’s time for our main event as another title is on the line, with the UWE tag-team champions Rock and Roll Express defending against the Bulldogs, in a rare fan-favorite v. fan-favorite match.
Match #4
UWE Tag-Team Champions the Rock and Roll Express and the Bulldogs (Bret Hart and Davey Boy Smith) fought to a time limit draw. The match saw both teams follow the rules and adhere to technical wrestling, although there were moments when the intensity of the contest saw tempers flare. After the match, the teams noticeably exited the ring without a handshake.
Gene Okerlund: I suspect we have not seen the last of these two evenly matched teams. Join us next week as UWE Television Champion Tito Santana will try and hold off a challenge from Nikita Koloff. We will also hear many more matches for Countdown to Greatness. Till next week wrestling fans!
