Solie and Reynolds open the show and welcome us to this week’s episode of “AAW SUNDAY NIGHT”!
Solie says that as we can see, the promotion has undergone a name change, becoming All-American Wrestling.
We’ve got an all-star card tonight, to go along with the name change. We’ll see a match for the American title between champion Paul Orndorff and the Universal Hearthrob Austin Idol! And, we’ll kick things off with a 10-man battle royal, where the two final participants will meet one on one next week to crown the first AAW Florida TV champion!
10 MAN BATTLE ROYAL. Ring announcer Larry Nelson introduces the 10 men that will participate in the match: Brad Armstrong, Barry Windham, Dutch Mantell, Dynamite Kid, Jimmy Garvin, David Sierra, Harley Race, Iceman Parsons, Koko Ware and taking the place of the previously announced Jerry Stubbs, a masked man calling himself Mr. Olympia!
The action is wild and woolly as soon as the bell rings, the 10 men all tear into each other. They immediately start trying to push each other over the top rope, but we don’t see any eliminations for the first few minutes. On commentary, Solie and Reynolds talk about the fact that the 10 wrestlers involved are all extremely talented, so there’s really no one wrestler that stands out as a clear favourite. Solie says that sometimes in Battle Royals, we’ll see wrestlers like Andre the Giant, and everyone immediately joins up to try and eliminate him, but we aren’t seeing any real joint efforts here, it’s truly every man for themselves.
Dutch Mantell is the first one to go out, as Brad Armstrong connects with a picture-perfect standing dropkick that sends the Dutchman flying over the top rope and all the way to the floor. He’s followed almost immediately by Koko Ware, as Koko was trying to eliminate Harley Race in the corner, Jimmy Garvin came up behind him, and dumped Koko over the top. Harley thanks Garvin for saving him by delivering a series of knife-edged chops that leave Garvin’s chest bright red. Garvin quickly moves to the other side of the ring to get away from the former World’s champion.
The remaining 8 wrestlers pair off in each corner of the ring. We see Harley Race slugging it out with Iceman Parsons, Dynamite Kid and Brad Armstrong grapple in another corner. Jimmy Garvin tries to push David Sierra over, while Barry Windham and the masked Mr. Olympia brawl in the fourth corner. David Sierra is the next wrestler eliminated, as Jimmy Garvin pushes him over the top rope. A minute or so later, Dynamite Kid is eliminated when Barry Windham hits him with a running clothesline, the momentum carrying DK right over the top and to the floor!
We’re down to 6 as we pass the 10-minute mark of the match. We get a double elimination about two minutes later, as Mr. Olympia and Brad Armstrong are both eliminated, Olympia by Barry Windham and Armstrong by Harley Race. With four wrestlers remaining, the two babyfaces, Windham and Parsons, team up to battle Race and Garvin. The babyfaces have the upper hand, until Garvin hits a low blow on Iceman Parsons and Race tosses him over the top rope.
Windham now finds himself at a disadvantage as Garvin and Race join forces and double-team him. Garvin, however, hasn’t forgotten the fact that when he saved Race from elimination earlier, Harley responded with some chops that have left bright red welts on Garvin’s chest. After Race and Garvin pound Windham into the mat, Garvin turns on Harley Race, and tosses him over the top rope!
We’re down to the final two, Windham and Garvin, and the bell rings to signal the end of the match, as these two will now meet on next week’s show to crown the first AAW Florida TV champion!
However, Garvin doesn’t want to wait, and he continues to stomp away at the fallen Windham. Garvin pulls Windham up, and drops him on his head with a brainbuster!
Garvin and his valet Precious celebrate as they leave the ring, with Garvin motioning that the TV title belt will soon be around his waist!
Solie and Reynolds discuss last week’s main event, when Rocky Johnson and Austin Idol teamed up to face Bobby Heenan’s new team of Gino Hernandez and Rick Rude.
VTR: Rocky/Idol vs Gino/Rude, 3-24-85, JIP:
Hernandez and Rude control the next several minutes, keeping Idol in their corner, and using quick tags to keep the fresh man in the ring. Rude and Gino look to be on their way to victory, when Idol manages to fight his way out of their corner, and makes the hot tag to Rocky Johnson!
The Soulman comes in and drops both Rude and Hernandez with rights and lefts! Rocky is fired up, but before he can do any more damage “MR. WONDERFUL” PAUL ORNDORFF hits the ring!
Orndorff slides into the ring behind Rocky, and clips Johnson’s knee, putting him on the mat. From there, Rude, Hernandez and Orndorff gang up on Rocky. Idol rushes in to make the save, but he gets beaten down as well!
Suddenly, there’s some commotion, and out of the crowd comes . . .
CHIEF WAHOO MCDANIEL!!!
Wahoo, in street clothes, slides into the ring and tears into all three of Heenan’s men! Unfortunately for Wahoo, the heels quickly gain the upper hand, and Rude and Gino hold Wahoo while Orndorff delivers a series of stiff right hands to the head of the big Chief.
Idol and Rocky are back up, and Idol starts brawling with Orndorff, while Rocky helps Wahoo send Rude and Gino out of the ring. Orndorff soon follows them, as a big right hand from Idol sends Orndorff tumbling through the ropes and to the floor.
END VTR
Solie and Reynolds are then joined by Rocky Johnson, Austin Idol and Wahoo McDaniel. Solie welcomes Wahoo back to Florida, and says that, judging by the reception he got when he showed up last week, he’s still as popular as ever with these fans here in the Sunshine state.
Wahoo says it’s good to be back, he’s always considered Florida his home away from home, and says it’s a great feeling to be back in front of these great fans! He then talks about Bobby Heenan and says that he and Heenan have crossed paths many times, in many different promotions, over the years, and when he heard about the trouble that Heenan’s been causing here in Florida, he just had to come back and see for himself. He says that Rocky Johnson and Austin Idol are good men, who are willing to stand up and fight for what’s right, and it would be an honor to stand side by side with them to fight the Heenan Family!
Rocky Johnson says that he already ran Heenan’s hired goon, Abdullah the Butcher, out the promotion, now he’s setting his sights on Gino Hernandez and Rick Rude! He says that they like to talk real tough, but tough guys don’t have to resort to jumping people from behind, like Rude and Gino did to him two weeks ago. He says that they’re nothing but a couple of punks, and he’s going to run them out of All-American Wrestling, just like he did Abdullah!
Idol says that things haven’t been going well for Heenan, Rocky ran Abdullah the Butcher out of town with his tail between his legs after whuppin’ him in a steel cage match, and right here tonight on TV, he’s going to beat Paul Orndorff and take the American title!
STEVE “DR. DEATH” WILLIAMS & JIM “ANVIL” NEIDHART beat HECTOR & CHAVO GUERRERO. Williams and Neidhart are wearing the Southwest tag team title belts that they won recently in Arizona. The Guerreros are one of the teams that they beat, in a four team elimination match, for those belts. Hector and Chavo have been looking for a shot at the belts since that match.
On commentary, Solie and Reynolds note that the Southwest branch of the promotion has closed up shop, but Doc and Anvil still demand that they be introduced as the Southwest tag team champions. Solie says that AAW promoters are working to put together a unification match between them and the American tag team champions the Fantastics, hopefully we’ll have some news on that soon.
Williams and Neidhart dominate the early going, the Guerreros are able to make a comeback late in the match, but in the end, it’s Doc and Anvil who get their hands raised when Williams plants Hector with the Oklahoma Stampede for the pinfall victory.
WAHOO MCDANIEL beats NORVELL AUSTIN. Wahoo gets the win after a big overhand chop and a butterfly suplex for the pinfall.
Ken Resnick is joined by Prof. Boris Malenko. Resnick says it’s been some time since the Florida fans have seen Boris.
Malenko says that he ruled this state for decades, he says that the name Boris Malenko still brings a chill to fans who were watching during his heyday. He says that he may be retired from active competition now, but he’s working to put together a stable of wrestlers who will instill fear in fans and wrestlers alike! He says that he’s been in negotiations for weeks now, and says the state of Florida will never be the same!
“GORGEOUS” GINO HERNANDEZ & “RAVISHING” RICK RUDE (w/ Bobby Heenan) beat NICK DECARLO & BOB MARCUS. DeCarlo and Marcus trade in the frigid Canadian winter for a warm, sunny tour of Florida. Unfortunately for them, they get steamrolled by Heenan’s duo, with Gino getting the win for his team after dropping a back elbow drop onto DeCarlo from the top rope for the pinfall.
“SOULMAN” ROCKY JOHNSON beats BARRY HOROWITZ. Rocky gets the win after connecting with an explosive right hand that knocks Horowitz senseless.
We see a video package highlighting the feud between Austin Idol and Paul Orndorff. We see clips of Orndorff cheating to beat Idol for the American title, and it ends with clips of Idol shoving Orndorff’s face into a cake during a celebration of Orndorff’s title win.
AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIP:
“MR. WONDERFUL” PAUL ORNDORFF (w/ Bobby Heenan) (champ) beats “THE UNIVERSAL HEARTHROB” AUSTIN IDOL. This one is a pier-six brawl right from the opening bell. Though both men are talented technical wrestlers, that goes right out the window here, as both men want to not only leave the ring as the American champion, but to put the other out of wrestling for good!
Idol dominates the early part of the match, and Orndorff just can’t seem to get anything going against the popular Universal Hearthrob. That changes when Bobby Heenan gets involved. The Brain gets up on the ring apron, distracting Idol, and allowing to Orndorff to attack from behind. Orndorff lowers the boom as Idol jaws with Heenan. Orndorff spends the next several minutes pummeling Idol, but he can’t put the Universal Hearthrob away. Every time Orndorff thinks he’s got the match won, Idol manages to find a way to kick out at the very last second!
Idol finally makes a comeback, he shakes off Orndorff’s punches, and tears into the American champion. Idol beats Orndorff from pillar to post, but when he tries to slap on the Las Vegas leglock, Orndorff puts a boot on Austin’s backside, and shoves him off, sending Idol face-first into the nearby turnbuckle. With Idol stunned, Orndorff gets to his feet, kicks Idol in the gut, and proceeds to drop Idol on his head with a vicious Piledriver!
This time, Idol doesn’t kick, and Paul Orndorff gets the 1, 2, 3!
Solie and Reynolds wrap things up, and Solie hypes next week’s show, which will see Barry Windham square off with Jimmy Garvin to crown the first AAW Florida TV champion!
So long from the Sunshine state!
