THE NATIONAL WRESTLING ALLIANCE PRESENTS…
MARCH MADNESS
FRIDAY NIGHT, MARCH 22, 1996
FROM THE CIVIC CENTER IN PROVIDENCE, RI
STAN LANE opens the show in the middle of the ring, and talks about tonight’s card. We will see four teams participating in a Round-Robin tournament for the vacant NWA World Tag Team Titles! The four teams will be the mysterious Los Stereotypicos, the Prophecy consisting of Christopher Daniels and Shannon Moore, The Bad Street Boyz consisting of Joey Matthews and Christian York, and Mike Quackenbush and NWA Light Heavyweight Champ Reckless Youth.
In the round robin tournament, teams will receive 2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss.
As well, we have two HUGE non-tournament matches. The first will see Japanese sensation Hiroyoshi Tenzan meet one of the toughest men to ever compete in a wrestling ring, Stan “the Lariat” Hansen! And in the main event, the NWA World Heavyweight Title will be on the line as reigning Champ Shane Douglas defends against the man he took the title from, Terry Funk!
LOS STEREOTYPICOS come out to the ring for the first match. The two masked men are wearing oversized sombreros, they swig from what look to be tequila bottles, and are led to the ring by a Mariachi band.
MATCH #1
ROUND-ROBIN MATCH:
RECKLESS YOUTH & MIKE QUACKENBUSH vs. LOS STEREOTYPICOS. Los Stereotypicos hold their own here, and give Youth and Quackenbush all they can handle. The Rhode Island fans are solidly behind Quack and Youth, though, and they pick up the win via DQ after one of the Stereotypicos smashes an empty tequila bottle over Quack’s head. After the match, Quackenbush is dazed, but is able to leave the ring on his own.
YOUTH & QUACKENBUSH: 2 points; LOS STEREOTYPICOS: 0 points
MATCH #2
ROUND-ROBIN MATCH:
THE PROPHECY (Christopher Daniels & Shannon Moore) vs. LOS STEREOTYPICOS. The masked Stereotypicos don’t get any rest, as they’re in action again in the second match, although these look to be two different men. They are done up like Mario and Luigi from Super Mario Bros, with big bushy moustaches attached to their masks. The match is fast-paced and full of high-flying moves. In the end, Daniels hits one of Los Stereotypicos with the Angel’s Wings for the pinfall.
PROPHECY: 2 points; LOS STEREOTYPICOS: 0 points
MATCH #3
ROUND-ROBIN MATCH:
THE BAD STREET BOYZ (Christian York & Joey Matthews) vs. MIKE QUACKENBUSH & RECKLESS YOUTH. York and Matthews are only just beginning their careers, but they show that already, they have the abilities to go a long way in this sport. In the end, though, it’s Quack and Youth getting their hands raised after Quackenbush hit the Quackendriver on York and pins him.
YOUTH & QUACKENBUSH: 4 points; BAD STREET BOYZ: 0 points
MATCH #4
ROUND-ROBIN MATCH:
LOS STEREOTYPICOS vs. THE BAD STREET BOYZ. This time, Los Stereotypicos are made up of one of the men from the first match, in a sombrero and chugging from a bottle of tequila, and one that is wearing a touque on his head, has a big beard (ala Jos LeDuc) attached to his mask, and is waving the Canadian flag as he walks to the ring.
This time, Los Stereotypicos are able to pick up 2 points, after the one with the beard and the touque hits Joey Matthews with the Northern Lights Suplex for the pinfall.
LOS STEREOTYPICOS: 2 points; BAD STREET BOYZ: 0 points
MATCH #5
ROUND-ROBIN MATCH:
MIKE QUACKENBUSH & RECKLESS YOUTH vs. THE PROPHECY. These two teams fly all over the place, executing one high-flying move after another! As we near the 20-minute time limit, Quackenbush and Youth really go all out, hitting several high-impact moves, and they get one nearfall after another. At the 19-minute mark, Quackenbush hits the Quackendriver on Moore, but Daniels breaks it up with a boot to the back at the VERY last second! Neither team can get a fall, and the match is declared a Draw.
YOUTH & QUACKENBUSH: 5 points; PROPHECY: 3 points
MATCH #6
ROUND-ROBIN MATCH:
THE PROPHECY vs. THE BAD STREET BOYZ. The match goes back and forth for the first few minutes, but Daniels and Moore soon take advantage. There is plenty of double-teaming from the Prophecy, and they work it perfectly, drawing the outside member of the Bad Street Boyz into the ring, which distracts the ref, allowing Daniels and Moore to work over the other Bad Street Boy. In the end, Moore picks up the win for the Prophecy, hitting York with the Mooregasm for the pinfall.
PROPHECY: 5 points; BAD STREET BOYZ: 0 points
Ring Announcer MIKE MCGUIRK announces that, since the Prophecy and Quackenbush & Youth both ended up with 5 points, they’ll wrestle again later in the night, with the winning team becoming the NWA World Tag Team Champions.
MATCH #7:
HIROYOSHI TENZAN vs. STAN HANSEN. These two men tear into each other as soon as the bell rings, and don’t let up at all. Hansen controls most of the early going inside the ring, but once the match moves to the floor, Tenzan takes over, bashing Hansen repeatedly with a steel chair. Hansen staggers, but the chair shots don’t put him down! Hansen battles back, sending Tenzan into the ringpost, but he stays on his feet as well!
Hansen drops Tenzan with a running clothesline, then rolls him onto the ramp that leads to the ring (the same one WCW used in the early 90s) and then climbs up onto the ramp. Hansen picks Tenzan up, and goes for a Piledriver, but Tenzan blocks it, then backdrops Hansen on the ramp!
The referee calls for the bell, declaring the match a Double Count-Out, but neither competitor seems to care, as they continue to brawl on the ramp. Hansen goes for the Lariat, but Tenzan ducks it, and then hits a running kick to the chest of Hansen. Stan is momentarily stunned, but it only takes him a second to recover, and the two men continue to brawl, slowly making their way down the ramp and through the entrance, out of sight.
NWA President BRUNO SAMMARTINO comes out to the ring, holding a case. He opens it up, and shows off the new NWA World Tag Team Title belts.
SAMMARTINO says that the winning team in the next match will be awarded these belts.
MATCH #8
ROUND-ROBIN TOURNAMENT FINAL
NO TIME LIMIT:
RECKLESS YOUTH & MIKE QUACKENBUSH vs. THE PROPHECY. The match starts off slowly, as both teams know what’s at stake, and neither want to make a mistake. The action soon picks up though, and the two teams pick up where they left off in their earlier match, all four men flying all over the place. At one point late in the match, Quackenbush sets a chair up near the corner, then charges into the corner, springs off the chair, landing on the top turnbuckle, then hits a somersault onto both Daniels and Moore, who are standing on the floor. Daniels and Moore hit Sunset Flips at the same time on Quack and Youth, but both are able to kick out.
In the end, Reckless Youth has Daniels in a bad way, and goes to the top rope, but Shannon Moore is there to shake the ropes, causing Youth to lose his footing and he ends up crotching himself on the top rope. Daniels jumps up onto the second turnbuckle, and hooks Youth, dropping him with a Superplex!
From there, Daniels hits the Best Moonsault Ever and that’s all she wrote for Reckless Youth, as Daniels gets the 1, 2, 3!!!
CHRISTOPHER DANIELS AND SHANNON MOORE ARE THE NEW NWA WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS!!!
After the match, Daniels takes the house mic from Mike McGuirk, and tells Youth that the World Tag Titles are only the beginning, and now Daniels is setting his sights on Youth’s NWA World Light Heavyweight Title!
MAIN EVENT
NWA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH:
SHANE DOUGLAS (Champ) vs. TERRY FUNK. These two are no strangers to each other, as it was Funk that Douglas took the NWA title from, and they had several rematches after that. The two men go tooth and nail for nearly 20 minutes, before Funk is able to block Douglas’ attempt at the Belly to Belly Suplex, and then flips Douglas to the mat. From there, Funk puts the boots to Douglas, before pulling him up and delivering a Piledriver. Douglas can’t kick out of Funk’s cover, and Terry gets the 1, 2, 3 to once again become NWA World Heavyweight Champion!!!
MIKE MCGUIRK announces that the NWA will be back in action on May 10 with SLAMBOREE: A LEGENDS REUNION. Slamboree will originate from the Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, FL and will be taped for video release.
On that show, Terry Funk will defend the NWA World Title against a former Champion, Ricky “the Dragon” Steamboat! Also, Mr. Wednesday Night Rob Van Dam will be in action against Tito Santana, and Al Snow makes his NWA debut!
As well, the NWA will honour some of the biggest stars from the past!
